The Exciting World of South Korean Protests
July 15, 2007 | by Jefferson | Filed Under People, Politics | 242 Comments
For a country of about 50 million people, there are a lot of protests in South Korea. With a national average of 11,000 public protests a year, the average South Korean riot policeman is mobilized to contain 85 demonstrations a year.
While the majority of such protests are probably pretty standard affairs involving marching, shouting, and possibly some violent clashes between protesters and police, there are also some far more interesting protests going on. Here are a few particularly uniquely interesting/crazy South Korean protest photos we’ve stumbled upon:
________________________________________
Dropping One’s Pants: A lot of South Korean soccer fans were bitterly disappointed in when their national team lost to Switzerland in the 2006 World Cup. Most fans simply felt bad about it, others made threatening phone calls to the Swiss Embassy about it, and South Korean internet users bombarded the FIFA homepage with complaints, forcing a temporary blocking of Korean access to the site. However, none of them could compare to this brilliant man, who decided to protest Korea’s loss by dropping his pants and standing around in the street:
________________________________________
Flag-Eating: Apparently burning foreign flags is illegal in South Korea, so if one wants to legally express their displeasure with a foreign country, why not eat their flag instead? This man was so angry about Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi’s visit to the Yasukuni Shrine in 2005 that he tried to do just that:
China has also been attacked in flag-eating protests:
________________________________________
Throwing Shit: Yes, the man in the photo below is indeed hurling feces in a protest. The man was a member of a group of South Korean cattle farmers, who were enraged that Lotte supermarkets had decided to sell U.S. beef. The newspaper source of this photo, which is worried about being sued under Korean law for harming the reputation of the photo’s subjects, has blurred out their faces:
________________________________________
Severed Dog Heads: In March 2007, a former South Korean army commando held a protest in front of the Japanese embassy in Seoul to mark the anniversary of peaceful mass demonstrations against Japanese colonial rule that took place in 1919. Apparently he got the brilliant idea of bringing along 5 dog heads, which were taken from some of the dog meat markets in the city, and placing them on the pavement to symbolize Koreans who supported Japanese colonial rule.
________________________________________
Ripping Apart Pigs: In May 2007, a group who opposed the a government decision to move a military office to Incheon held a protest in which they ripped apart a live two-month-old piglet. South Korean animal rights groups were understandably outraged by the protest:
________________________________________
Botched Hara-kiri: Some particularly lively Korean nationalist protesters have taken a page from feudal Japanese history by holding protests in which they attempt to commit hara-kiri. One example is this man, who stabbed himself in the stomach to protest Japanese plans to conduct a marine survey of the waters close to the disputed Liancourt Rocks:
________________________________________
Finger Chopping: Another group of South Korean nationalists protesting against the Yasukuni Shrine in 2001 seemed to favor chopping off some of their fingers instead of hara-kiri:
________________________________________
Beheading Dummies: A far less dangerous way of expressing anger against Japanese leaders can be found in these photos of protesters beheading a dummy Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi:
But dummies can never really replace the fun of beating up human enemies:
________________________________________
The Bee Man: Ahn Sang-gyu, a South Korean bee farmer and patriot, held a protest in May of 2006 in which he covered himself with bees to express his disagreement with Japan’s territorial claim to the Korean-occupied Liancourt Rocks. According to the BBC, he covered himself with 187,000 bees to represent the 187,000 square meter dimensions of the islets:
His crazy performance even got covered by the Japanese press:
________________________________________
Pro-Prostitution Protests: When the South Korean government passed an anti-prostitution law in 2004, thousands of Korean prostitutes took to the streets to demand that their livelihood be protected and prostitution be legalized. Most of the women wore masks to hide their identities:
On June 29, 2007, another such protest was held in Seoul against government crackdowns on prostitution, with about 3000 sex workers taking to the streets, including this girl in a bikini:
________________________________________
Torchlights: It is not uncommon for South Korean protesters to carry torches during their marches. One example would be this march to mark the anniversary of the March 1st movement:
Torch-carrying protesters can also be particularly terrifying for riot police. Here is a confrontation between riot police and anti-FTA farmers in late 2007:
The aftermath of that protest was, shall we say, predictable?
________________________________________
Burning Holy Books: Speaking of fires, here are some South Korean protesters who were extremely angry when Iraqis kidnapped and murdered a Korean. They retaliated by burning some copies of the Koran:
Luckily, nobody in the Muslim world was paying attention to their protest, so Korea didn’t face the kind of reaction those responsible for printing a cartoon of the prophet Mohamed faced.
________________________________________
Resisting Water: We’ll close this post with some images of an anti-APEC protester, who refused to back down when faced with fire hose-equipped riot police during a 2005 protest:

Crazy Ahole!!! pulling apart a live pig is horrible. IDIOT!! they should pull apart one of their own since they gonna chop their own fingers anyway. Disgusting.
Obviously some of them are out of their mind, yes, but consider this. They are not the majority of the Koreans. They are only a small portion of them. Obviously the ripping a pig apart was the worst idea and most Koreans blamed and turned against them when it was aired. But, please. You are showing only worst pictures of the korean protesters and telling as if it’s all they do.
Yes. Some Koreans do stupid things. Some koreans eat dogs. Some koreans protest like that. But they are only a few among many, and every country and ethnicity has those people among them, especially when they are desperate.
I am a Korean. And I always feel ashamed of some of our people doing such bad things. But believe me. Most of the Koreans are people like you. I am a person like you. Please don’t make fun of an entire country for those small group of them, especially when you don’t know enough of them.

In 1988, I (a very obvious Caucasian) was visiting Seoul, and ran into a protest. This one man waving a sign refused to let me past him, until finally I looked at it and said, “OK, I’ve read your sign.” Then he let me proceed on. Isn’t that what a peaceful protest is supposed to be like?
To the person complaining about our perceptions of South Korean society;
It may not be all of you, but i’s enough of you that these sadistic animals did not get thrown to jail.
In a civilised country, placing dogs’ head on the road, or ripping a live pig asunder, is not merely considered unpleasant – it’s illigal.
Don’t come on here whining about cultural relativism – we’re not interested. Soend your efforts trying to drag your countrymen out of the dark-ages.
I’ll bet that man attempting to eat that flag will feel smart when he’s pulling it out his ass later.

Medium Dave,
Sirylcat is sincere and your invective is missing logic (applying the same standards to yourself as you do to others). The dog and pig pictures disgust me too, but I believe Sirylcat when he/she says the it’s a small minority. I’m sure there are disgusting things in your “civilized” culture which you’re not out crusading against.
The most disgusting thing here are the US-American Neo-Nazis who would never protest anything, murder a million Iraquis and call other countries “uncivilized”.

Hey mate, I’m not even Korean and I think you’re too much of an idiot to talk, so I’m officially firing you from talking.
First of all, most protesters only DO represent a small niche of society. You have to be cattle to follow blindly and 100% in any cause without question. I agree with Greenpeace.. however, do I agree with their tactics? Absolutely not. I think they’re a bunch of idiots. I agree that no animal should be tortured for any reason. Do I agree with PETA because my and their views sometimes parallel? F**k no. They’re an immature bunch of idiots too.
What’s my point? Glad you asked… the Korean poster from earlier who said that these are just isolated groups of protesters is absolutely right. They are.
You say they’re not, which pretty much means that you believe that all groups of protesters speak for the vast majority. Do protesters in Washington speak for you? And do you agree with all protesters all the time? Do you agree with everything they do? If not, then shut the f**k up and stop showing the rest of us how medieval YOUR actual thinking really is.
Have a peachy day!
In reply to comment #44 (GOD):
Actually I believe you wouldn’t have done jack sh*t. You only say stupid sh*t like that when you’ve never been confronted with ‘mob mentality’. If you’d have said that you’d have been scared sh*tless, I would have backed you up.
In reality what would have probably happened is you would have probably been pulling on one of the ropes if anyone had asked you to. Not because you would have agreed, but because you would have been too scared not to go along with the mob. That’s mob mentality. The fear that if you don’t follow along you may end up the piglet yourself.
So stop acting tough from your armchair. Face it, the only things you actually have the guts to shoot between the eyes are the demons in your video games. K?
Peace.

Our scientific knowledge is very limited and there are many diseases which our medical science could not eliminate or cure- some illness can be cured, cannot cured or just loose one’s life to it.
The Korean mass demonstration against the beef and eventually against the Lee government is very dangerous tactics which are damaging the Korea’s economy immensely, most beneficial to stupid anti lee politicians, eventually Kim Joong Ill dreamers.
Their actions are excessive and very harmful to Koreans and the Korean images which display irrationality of Korean people.
Don’t we have any decent educators or scientists who could explain the status of mad cow disease control techniques to the Korean people? If the college student demonstrators are smart enough, try to seek fair solutions to the problem, getting help from our own scholars, scientists and government officials.
If they really don’t like the beef, just don’t buy it and don’t eat.
If they antagonize the trade relations with US, South Korea could hurt her national economy immensely. If you continue the stupid emotional demonstrations to destroy the Lee government, that is a great opportunity for the North Korean communist to walk down to South and join the mass. In that case, do you think the United States Army would fight for you stupid demonstrators against the North. You must understand South has only a tinny part of her small territory now. Didn’t see how Mr, Lee look so small when he met with the Chinese President Hu jin Tau.
South become so prosperous with the aid from the US. So you can now have a choice to east the beef or not to eat under the circumstances. Do you think If the North walks down to South, could they feed you better beef?
Allow the government to find a best way to deal with the beef problems. Do you think demonstrators could resolve the problem? If
you don’t respect the law and order of your own free society, who would help you? If your demonstration had sent your sincere messages to the government, it would try to resolve the problem for the best interest of the Korean people. Don’t let the ghost of mad cow kill your country, Korea.
Koreans may be well educated, but they easily fall into false rumors and never listen to those who have differrent views. I’ve seen Koreans doing verbal abuse to people who think that American beef is safe.
Korean protestors who oppose the beef deal…

Koreans are a psychotic culture, the World knows this more and more with the dissemination of information. They should just hari kari themselves en masse, that would rock. We can keep the good looking prostitutes, i guess.
mad cow message
The candle light demonstrators are going to continue the anti beef march, eventually “You don’t have to eat American beef.” The demonstrators should know that Americans eat beef every day without mad cow disease yet. You think that you can stop buying American beef in anti American sentiment. If you want to have trade war with America, you will fail because Americans could avoid Korean goods very easily, such as cell phone, Samsung TV, radio, computer, etc. You can reject one item of American good, beef. But Koreans will lose the American market which feed you beef and other good things.
You hate Americans. Then, who would love you Koreans? Russians, Chinese or Japanese? Even if they do, they could not feed you beef.
You shook up the new Korean government. Communists and mad cow ghosts have immensely damaged South Korea. President Lee Myung Baek seems to be very weak, showing just gentleness. He should have shown his tough stand. If the civilian government loses the control, the communists could walk down to South.
If anyone thinks Kim Jong IL would bring his own workers’ paradise to South, he is absolutely empty headed. There is no mad cow in America but in the empty Korean heads.
You have had enough demonstrations. The president, the people and the world got your message.
If South Korea loses American market, do you think Russians or Chinese could help you?
I hope that they would understand the situation of South is always in a danger. Do you know that only a small piece of the land is left in the South Korean hands?
The weak Korean government could not help the 6 nation de-nuclearization conference. Who can unify the divided Korea? It is you.
This maybe psychotic according to “WESTERNERS” but to be honest these people have had a histroy of regime and do their god dam best to void something they dont want in the future, these people truely care! “They are not mad, people should look at this and say to them selves, why am I not that passionate?!” Because most of the rest of the civilized world discovered long ago that extremism is just plain annoying as well as dangerous. This type of infantile shit-disturbing is effective at only one thing: getting anyone with common sense and compassion to truly dislike you. When that happens, no one wants to hear you anymore. I don’t think I’ll ever want to hear the voice of Korea depicted in those photographs ever again. I was born in Seoul. My father fought for that country for two years of his life. To see that the North succeed in duping the South into believing that America is the enemy is vile. I am truly grateful that most people in the world don’t pull this shit. I also appreciate the Koreans who don’t pull this shit. I will hear their voices, even when they don’t agree with mine.

Mad cowed assemblymen.
WHO REPRESENTS KOREA?, MAD COWS?, MOBS?. OR DUMMIES?
The Korean people want to be free from the mad cow riots. It reminds Rousseau’s statement. “Man is born free, yet everywhere he is chains.” In this social condition, he proposed an idea of a representative government. So the citizens send their elected representatives to the parliament to present the voice of the people to find solutions for the problems.
Now in Korea, the government is a representative democratic system.
Under the present circumstances, the opposition parties are boycotting the assembly to prevent the opening of the new assembly. Thus, the opposition leaders are neglecting their own duties to represent the people. In other words, they abandoned their responsibilities as the representatives of the people. Outside the parliament, they do not have a legitimate voice or a forum. If they have a legitimate disagreement with the beef import issue, they should come to tell their opinion to the national assembly. They are just trying to paralyze the function of the government.
Thus, their very action is destructive and disqualifies their representation –A reverse course to the parliamentary system.
It is questionable if the government authority has the power to dismiss the disobedient opposition members. If so, it should oust them and let the people have a new election for their own true representation. Otherwise the society can not stand in peace under the status of “misgivings.” Needless to say KorUSFTA benefits.
BAN KI MOON, UN SECRETARY
Even if they have a disagreement with the beef imports, they should have convened the assembly even during the demonstrations.
More over, the national Assembly knew that UN Secretary Ban Ki Moon will visit Korea. They should have prepared in advance to receive him. Thus, UN Secretary Ban Ki Moon should have been respectably welcomed, as an international dignitary, and let him speak to the joint session of the government and the Assembly that represented the Korean people. But, they failed miserably as they violated their protocol in the occasion. Unfortunately, the UN secretary did not have a chance to speak proudly to his countrymen, Koreans, who were saved by the UN army. Thus, the Korean people scarred themselves, as if their representatives were ignorant derelicts. They seemed to have ignored their own status as the assemblymen. They just tried to snub the Lee Myung Bak government.
However, the opposition leaders actually snubbed themselves as if spitting into each other’s face. What a shameful action?
They misrepresented Koreans’ image to the world.
Koreans must know that South Korea was able to preserve its tiny territory because UN member nations sacrificed their lives to save South Korea from the communist aggressors.
But they missed the great opportunity to express the Korean gratitude to the Secretary who represents the member nations. Because of their misrepresentation, the Korean people be ashamed of themselves.
The Secretary is a proud Korean citizen. Thus, the Korean people are considered to be honored so much in the international scene because of his statue.
Imagine if these mobs had taken over the legitimate government in riots, what would happen to the people? Their suffering would be much worse than the mad cow ghosts can give.
GORBACHEV KIM
Remember the procommunist demonstrators that your mentor Kim Jong Il is evolving into Gorbachev Kim. You do not have any other place to go now but Myanmar or Zimbabwe. Korea should keep up its pace according to the change of East Asian political scene. The denuclearization is both US and our victory.
The opposition leaders and senseless demonstrators owe an apology to the nation. Especially, the undignified religious leaders should be ashamed of their not-so-saintly, subnormal spirituality, joining the senseless mad cow demonstrators against the very new government that you did not give even
a short period of honeymoon. Don’t you think you are cruelly mad cowed? – Think over! Where to go from here? Have good time South Korean mad cowed comrads!
Do you know why the smart cruel communist soldier killed the women traveler? They just wanted to give the trouble to the South Korean government.
Wake up! Stay on the line of law and order! Eat beef; work harder, Korea will be beautiful for ever beyond the mad cows. It’s yours.
Korean people are senseless fools when it comes to protesting.

There are always people who want to be arseholes in every country. It seems in Korea thee people do so in a more creative way. But as for the pig, that was senseless, and notin the slightest bit related to what was being protested. Violent people looking for an excuse. But animal rights in Korea is certainly dissapointing. I am a strong supporter of our democratic right to protest but to engage in barbaric acts of cruelty towards sentient creatures sickens and angers me. Protesting is a great thing but causing suffering to make your point? That makes you as bad as the people you protest against. During the Vietnam war there was a Buddhist monk in America who set himself on fire to protest the war. Now that took some of most profound courage I’ve ever seen. Killing a baby animal to make your point? The actions of a coward.
Another great post. I just email this to my friend.

Dear Company
I’m selling the rights to my domain name SouthKoreanGroup.com
and am contacting a few companies that I think may be able to use this web name successfully.
You can use this domain name in your operation as it has good potential to increase traffic and business to your site.
The .com TLD has come to be synonymous with business on the Internet and it carries a higher level of prestige and reduces the risk of traffic diversion to other extensions. For these reasons, most businesses prefer to use a .com domain name for their online presence. In turn, this results in .com domain names having significantly higher values than domains with other TLDs.
SouthKoreanGroup.com is a powerful industry keyword domain name that needs no explanation of spelling pronunciation. Owning such a name will tell your competitors, current and future customers, partners and/or investors that you are the Player in this space.
Since we are proactively seeking a buyer for this domain, we do not expect to own it for very long. Once NewJokers.com is sold to an industry player, we don’t expect that this great domain name will ever be for sale again.
I accept offers from $ 1,900

A lot of you ignorant honkys and hillbillies are much too eager to deride an entire race for the actions of a few overenthusiastic protesters. I can make a propagandistic post about any race and make them look equally bad or worse.
A few dumbass Koreans quartered a piglet to make a point. The entire American nation lynched blacks during slavery for no other reason than blind hate. You decide which is worse. The killing of a foodstuff, albeit in a cruel fashion, or the senseless systematic murders of a fellow man just because he was of a darker hue? You decide which is less civilized.
Poor pig!
I had the misfortune of living in Korea before – hands down, the worst country I’ve been to in Asia – incredibly xenophobic, racist and jingoistic – fuck off and die, Korea.

people are usually kind and nice
protests? it is a long story they say. it goes way back to the history how they are so overactive like that.
and most of all, how crucial it is, the government won’t listen.
and like many people say, they represent few of the nation not all. so don’t curse the whole nation.
These actions, they are scolded by many other citizens. So stop cursing them all.
p.s. eating dog and all, it is their tradition in history, and they eat only ones that is raised for eating. and not all people enjoy, some do.
it is like eating cow to them to those people. why should anyone bother.

Some retarted protests up there, but I find those generalizing a whole country based a couple of morons to be the most stupid.
I’ve got a few Korean friends and have visited the country a few times, and they look at the “demonstrations” with contempt: the “protesters” by experience are a mere bunch of rabble rousers who clog the streets, jamming traffic and annoying bystanders. Gandi’s or Martin Luther King Jr’s principle of peaceful protest is throw out the window at a car.
And like a link above notes, some people protest as a living, somewhat a vulgar form of lobbying. They actually live off the vile chaos they create.
Concluding all Koreans are f’ed up because of some idiots is like saying all Americans are cross-breeding rasists because of a few red necks, or denoucing all Germans as Nazis just because of a few neo nazis and their history.
Doucebags like Phillip should realize this. I wanna ask Phillip what country he’s from, and see how he feels if I denouced his people and his country cause of some nasty incidents by a VERY small minority. Phillip, I dare you.

Hair style plays an important role for the decoration of head. So when choosing the jewels, we should not neglect the coordination between them. Long-hair with narrow earring can display the ladylike mien. While it sets off tiffany silvers s cleverness that short hair goes with exquisite studs. That classical bun matches tiffany bracelet can make people elegant and graceful. A pile of chicken feathers hair disorder, it should be with the tiffany shop

Yes, I think there’s a great deal of tension in the relationship right now. I think the Chinese very clearly wanted the North Koreans not to test missiles in July. They wanted the Koreans very clearly not to test nuclear weapons, and in both cases North Koreans ignored the warnings. So for the Chinese it’s not only a loss of face because they had been taking the lead in trying to bring North Korea back to the negotiation table, but I think there’s also a great deal of anger personally at Kim and the Korean military.
