Steve Moore, a retired special agent, called the evidence he uncovered in the Knox case "completely conclusive" as to her innocence. "There is no DNA evidence," he told ABC News today.
Knox, 22, has spent three years in an Italian prison in connection with the murder of Meredith Kercher, who was her roommate when she came to study in Perugia in the fall of 2007. Kercher was found sexually assaulted and her throat cut.
Knox was convicted of the crime after a lengthy trial and sentenced to 26 years in prison. Her former Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, was also convicted along with Rudy Guede. Knox's attorneys are appealing.
Moore admitted he first thought Knox was guilty. But he spent the past year researching the case, at the urging of his wife, poring over translated copies of the Italian police and forensic documents.
"I couldn't figure out why Amanda and Raffaele weren't eliminated on Day One as suspects," he said. "I kept thinking the smoking gun would pop up -- and it didn't come."
He has not talked to Knox's family or her attorneys.
