Nicholas Anstee was appointed the 682nd Rt Hon Lord Mayor of the City of London in November 2009. He visited Japan in May with representatives of UK financial firms to speak with members of the government, Nippon Keidanren and private firms.

David Warren became Ambassador to Japan in July 2008. He graduated from Oxford University, joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1975, and also served here in 1977-1981 and in 1993-1998, as well as in Nairobi, Kenya.

Sir Andrew Cahn, KCMG has been Chief Executive of UK Trade & Investment since 2006. He worked at the European Commission, for the UK in the European Union, and the European Secretariat in the Cabinet Office before joining British Airways in 2000.


Philip Gibb became BCCJ President in April 2010 and is a financial services veteran of some 37 years. He has spent the last six years with Magellan Financial Planning, advising clients on all aspects of their personal financial planning needs.

Andrew Mankiewicz became BCCJ President in 2007 and is CEO of Tozai Group —M&A advisors on Japan, Korea, China and the UK. For 18 years, he has built businesses in sectors including financial services, IT, media, healthcare and retail.


Ian de Stains, OBE became BCCJ Executive Director in 1987. After joining the BBC in 1969 he was seconded to NHK in Tokyo in 1976. Mr De Stains was appointed OBE in 1993 for commercial and community service.


Paul Atkinson is BCCJ vice-president and managing director of the Insurance Group at Cornes & Co. Ltd., where he is responsible for commercial insurance.

David Cairns has been Director of UK Trade & Investment in Japan since 2006 and studied Japanese art and language at Oxford University. After working for Nomura in London he joined the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.


Paul Hunter is the economic counsellor at the British Embassy Tokyo and has been head of the Economic and Trade Policy Section since 2008. He was previously at the UK’s Financial Services Authority and Office for National Statistics.

Dr. Gabriel Symonds trained at St Bartholomew’s Hospital (University of London) and opened the Tokyo British Clinic in 1992.


Roland Buerk became the BBC Tokyo correspondent in January 2009 after having covered South Asia for five years.

Dr David Bryer CMG is chairman of Home-Start International and previously was director of Oxfam and a board member of WWF and Save the Children. He was appointed CMG in 1996.
