Who to tip and how much
Since the list is so comprehensive, and varied, we decided to highlight our favorite tipping tips form Coupon Sherpa. Odds are you didn't know how much to tip these professions.
- Take-Out Food – 10% when you pay. Make sure you tip based on the entire check if you use restaurant coupons.
- Long-term Parking Shuttle Driver - $1 to $2 per bag, if the driver assists you with your bags.
- Massage Therapists - 10% to 20% per massage.
- Furniture Delivery - $5 per large item delivered. You may want to tip more if the delivery requires a lot of set up.
- Housekeeping Staff – $1 to $5, depending on the hotel's quality and extra services provided. Tip daily as staff varies and put the cash in a sealed enveloped indicating it's for housekeeping.
- Blackjack Dealers - $5 chip per gambling session (higher at high limit tables). Also, you can set up a side bet for the dealer as a tip, usually at the minimum betting level.
- Salmon Fishing Guides - 15% is the average for independent fishing guides, but not less than 10%.
- Disc Jockeys - $5 for requests. $20 to $50 for employers.
- Tattoo Artists – 10% to 20%, depending on the difficulty and amount of work performed.
- Piercing Technicians – 10%
- Tow Truck Operators – $3 to $5 per car towed, even if it's covered by AAA
- Dog Groomers - $10
- Museum Guides - $1 per tour participant.
- Pizza Delivery – $2 to $5 depending on the distance the delivery person had to drive. If you use pizza coupons, make sure you tip based on the total price of the check. Check first to make sure a small tip was not already included in the total price, but make sure this isn't a "service fee" not shared with drivers.
- Sherpas – Tip one Yak for making it up the mountain and an additional Yak every time the sherpa has to save you from falling off the mountain.
Based on the full list of tipping etiquette it's pretty likely that I have stiffed or under-tipped for many services over the years. I can only hope I haven't been confused for Mr. Pink when it comes to leaving a tip for good service. Thankfully, there's one professional I never forget to tip, and neither should you, your barber. I always tip according to the service I am provided with. High tip for better service. I also donate to websites when they have a PayPal donate button, if the website is running on donations and provides me with products or information I regularly appreciate. For example, http://bit.ly/smartsamples offers practical spending and savings advice while providing many free samples as well as games. They are just one site I donate to. We have to remember to tip people well because often their pay is low and they have to survive on mostly tips.

I have never left a tip for anyone in my life. In fact, when they "added" 15% to my check at the restaurant, I charged the whole thing back, this has happened 5 times to me. They get a salary, not only that, if they don't at least get $8 per hour with tips, STATE LAW says that the restaurant has to make up the difference. Only a true sucker leaves ay kind of tip

What classless morons like you don't realize is that wait staff only get minimum wage BECAUSE you are SUPPOSED to tip. This keeps YOUR check lower at the restaurant because the establishments overhead is less. Would you like to start paying $20 for a hamburger? Minimum wage is the only reason most of these establishments are competitive at all. The waiter/ waitress is responsible for your tip whether you pay it or not. Mr tax man taxes them on a percentage of each transaction so you are stealing from them if you don't tip. So, when you come on here and gloat because you don't tip, It makes you look like a fool. Be an adult and tip your waiter and bartenders.

Waiters and waitresses make the most $2.13 a hr. Don't be stupid. I worked in the resturant business for 34 years. Then they have 8% taking out out their check by our goverment before they even get it. So if you are not leaving a tip, shame on you!!!! You should always tip at least 18%. They even have the info on airlines how to tip..There have been times I've came home with a $5.00 paycheck, so I depended on my tips And Tips mean "To insure proper service"

you are a sucker to leave anything at all. Who is forcing them to work in a restaurant? That is misinformation that they get such a low salary. State law says that their salary and tips MUST add to eight dollars an hour, and if it doesn't, the restaurant must make up the difference. If they add a tip without my authorization, I will charge it back on my visa, not only do they have to give the money back to the bank, they get a $29 chargeback fee.

I agree with most of the advice on tipping the sherpa, although I'm still at a loss as to how much of a tip he should receive if I actually fall off the mountain. It's not his fault, and besides he's working for a living like everyone else! The rest of the tipping advice is absolutely ridiculous!

What about us Masons. We work on your homes in both 100+ and -32 degree weather and never get tipped. Yet some able bodied guy working in an air conditioned restaurant wants us to tip. Get real. Man up and get a real job. that goes for all of you who have easy jobs and want free hand outs from hard working people.

Guillermina That law you are talking about doesn't apply to diners or restaurant that do not break interstate Trade ie TGI, or Applebees. Jo's diner or John's Seafood restauant do not have that law protection. Most of the time the tip fee is giving to the cheap dumbass who knows jack about peaple working to make end meet. Maybe if you TIP you server you get good service. Tipping is not a must but it's how some make money. Like you might have to someday. Remember someone you love might need a job and waiting table or valeting cars is the job they get...

THIS IS RIDICULOUS. I am sick and tired of "having" to leave more money for a product or service that has a definite price shown. I have heard all the stories before and let me tell you, the owners usually (not always), drive fancy cars and live pretty well. Why am I supposed to support the wages of any employee? That should be the employers responsibility.
There are only about 3 people I care to leave more money for....The Airline Pilot who landed safely while I was a passenger, the Brain Surgeon who successfully fixed my brain, the Parachute Packer who packed my equipment and the Fire Extinguisher guy...I want to make sure those people KNOW I appreciate their good work. Other than that, if the menu says the Octopus Salad is $8.95 then that is what I want to pay....not $8.95 PLUS.

wow alot of you r really cheap!!! let me tell u something i worked in the resturant field for many years ranging from a high end french resturant to pizza delivery working for tips and management. if you dont tip in pizza delivery and u r a regular u better believe that i would take my sweet time to get to your house. and in resturant i hope you like spit and dirt cause if your hated in a resturant ive seen lots of different ways to give it right back to you. so if i were you cheapos just make you own food from now on. and to the masons sorry but im paying you contractors enough to work on my house. why should i give a tip? and in the serving u dont even get min wage so all they make are tips to support the family.

Many people who frequent restaurants need to ask for a particular waiter or waitress they have used before. My husband and I aren't afraid to admit we only want a white person waiting on us since many people have had bad experiences with the Obama types who think they are "above" us now. We always give a very good tip after an evenings meal, usually $75 and sometimes more depending if we are entertaining guests at our table. These young men or ladies work hard to support their family and appreciates our being generous . It is nice when the waiters know our names and will always address us by Mr or Mrs when sitting down.
