Flight Attendant Blows His Top, Yells at Passengers and Bolts Down Emergency Slide
Slater was working on a flight from Pittsburgh that had landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, when he was hit on the head by a bag a passenger was pulling out early from an overhead compartment.
According to the New York Daily News, words were exchanged and Slater's reaction was to blow his top. He spewed profanity at stunned passengers, grabbed a beer and activated the plane's emergency slide, then bolted off the plane.
Passengers told the News as part of his rant, Slater, 38, said he planned to quit the airline.
"He seemed kind of happy about it. He was like, 'I just quit my job,'" says passenger Phil Catelinet, 36, of Brooklyn.
Slater got on the AirTrain that takes travelers into the city, but his bizarre behavior continued when he stripped off his tie and threw it at train passengers.
It was unclear how long Slater had worked for JetBlue, but there were some reports he had worked for airlines for 20 years.
JetBlue reported the incident, but police did not arrive until Slater had left the scene. He was arrested at his beachfront home in the Rockaways.
Slater was reportedly smiling when police led him away in handcuffs and when he was later charged with reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.
"It's pretty much the craziest thing I've ever seen on a plane," says passenger Catelinet.
The brother of Slater's partner says he was "dumbfounded" by the wacky incident. "He's an everyday ordinary guy, a nice guy," John Rochelle, 39, tells the News.
A JetBlue co-worker who was on the flight, calls Slater a working-class hero.
"It's something we all fantasize about," she tells the newspaper. "But we have kids and a mortgage or are just too chicken - or sane - to go through with [it]."

I am still laughing and Steven Slater is probably still a nice guy. I have flown Jet Blue and I sometimes worried about how hard their staff works to be extra friendly and "fun" with passengers. I guess all that happy talk finally caused this guy to snap. Who wouldn't after some idiot hits them in the head with their bag? People have no common sense these days. Working in a service job is harder than ever when people don't know the meaning of the word "civilized." I loved the dramatic "wake up call" from Slater.
I am on an airplane enough to see how some folks act and how the airline crew have to put up with these folks. Way to go Steven!! I too, would like to buy you a cold one.
Slater you ROCK!
I fly JetBlue regularly and it is my airline of choice for going down to Tampa. Their crews really do work hard and on every flight there is at least one a**hole passenger who is either rude, way too big for their seat, presses that darn buzzer every 5 seconds or smells. They always do a great job handling things and the one time i had a problem on a flight, a simple email to customer service and it was taken care of within hours!
On the flip side I also fly Luftansa internationally and those flight attendants scare the crap outta me. NO ONE gets outts line. You might get smacked and tied up in an overhead bin! They give you that stern look that screams "BE -HAVE!" and everyone slinks down into their seats. But it is always smooth sailing.
Steven I wish you luck and a loooooong vacation!
P.S. You should sue the passenger who hit you on the head with their bag.
After decades of flying cross country and around the world, I have noticed the steady decline ing (1) the quality of the flying public and (2) manners in general. People bring way too much and way too heavy baggage onboard and we all suffer for it. The airlines seem afraid to confront people about the junk they bring onboard, most of which is unnecessary crap that could be checked. Until the paying flying public demands better quality treatment and consideration by other passengers, the rude behavior will continue.
I can only imagine what kind of day this flight attendant had...I have seen what he has to deal with and I sure wouldn't have taken any more of the crap either. There's always another job, even in this economy!! Airlines are now like Greyhound...no class, no consideration, no manners!
Having had a history of working customer service jobs and caring for sickly parents I fully understand the stress Steven is under. No one should have to take abuse from any one at a job! Why wasn't the passenger arrested for not compling with FCC regulations?
She is guilty of breaking an important regulation especially in these days when terrorists have changed the way we travel live and being a New Yorker even the way we look at a clear blue sky.
This is all very natura and as far as I am concerned he handled it pretty well where some people with rage might have actually struck the passenger.. He is my hero of the day for keeping his cool as far as I am concerend
As some one who works with the public i understand and applaude what he has done.
too many people treat us with total disrespect, while we are taught to treat every CUSTOMER OR GUEST with respect. some one should teach these people that to get respect you have to earn it and rules are for everyone not just the other person.
Give me a break! Good for him! JetBlue couldn't have done anything. I can't belileve that he was arrested! Passengers use flight attendents as moms, luggage carriers, and basically punching bags! What did that guy think he was doing when he was getting his bag. It was probably way too big and should have been checked! Way to go Steve! I'm just sorry that you have to go through legal trouble now!
I'd hire this man in a heartbeat! What an awesome way to walk off a job & not accepting abuse from a person who thinks being a customer entitles you to be rude.
Treat people in customer relations with great respect. Ecspecially food servers...and I think we all know why that's a good idea.
I want to see you doing beer commercials in your next career! You will be a hit! hope it was a Bub Lite you grabed.
I think the big dumb jerk that could not follow a simple rule of remaining in his seat should get arrested...what a complete idiot-it's people like that that cause very nice, down to earth guys like Steven Slater to lose it.
I don't blame him at all. Passengers should always follow the rules. Last year when I flew first class, coach passengers kept coming up to first class to use our bathroom. The attendants kept telling them not to come up to first class, but they kept coming up. I was going to say something to them myself, but my wife advised me not to start something. What makes people think they can do what they want without following the rules? People are just out for themselves and disregard society. I wish him well and hope he finds a job where he will be comfortable.
PEOPLE ARE RUDE AND THINK THEY CAN DO OR SAY ANYTHING AND THE WORKING PEOPLE HAVE TO TOLERATE IT. I AM SURE ONE OF THE RUDE IDIOTS PUSHED HIM OVER THE EDGE. I AM ON HIS SIDE!! IT IS TIME THE WORKING PEOPLE ARE RESPECTED!!
I totally agree! The passenger initiated the verbal abuse, compounding his/her obliteration of airline rules, disregard for authority and total ignorance of any trace of manners and common decency. Actually, Mr. Slater executed restraint and reacted rather calmly under the circumstances compared to those who would have become physical in return.
I can't believe he's being charged with reckless endangerment - the flight was over and none of the passengers lives or well-being were put in jeopardy as a result of his actions. The passenger should be charged.
Furthermore, airlines should do something about those passengers that put their bags into the overhead compartments closer to the exit instead of the one directly above their seat. Anyone who does that should have their bags removed from overhead and placed into the cargo hold - that would teach them!
Way to stick it to all of these jerks out there who think they are entitled!!!! You are my hero!!! Cheers to you!
I am totally on this guys side. If I was on that plane I would I would have stood up and given him a standing ovation and I am convinced that many others would have done so with me. I wonder how he will put this in his resume. LOL
