Arjun Atwal became the first Indian born player to win on Tour (Wyndham Championship) and the first player in 24 years to win both the Monday qualifier and the tournament following. The last time a player won both the qualifier and following tournament, was by Fred Wadsworth at the 1986 Southern Open. Atwal’s won the Wyndham by one stroke, shooting a 67, 20-under 260 for the tournament.
Atwal was beat out David Toms who shot 19-under, followed by John Mallinger, Michael Sim, John Rollins, and Justin Leonard who all tied for third posting 18-under for the tournament.
“I told my caddie, ‘We’ve got nothing to lose this week. Just go out there and try and win it,’” Atwal said. “Guys are going to be out there trying to secure their FedEx Cup spots or whatever. We’ve got nothing. I don’t have a card. I don’t have anything. Just go out there and free-wheel it, and that’s what I did this week.”
