The CRU is a taxpayer funded body which is now exposed as not fit for purpose, compromised by global warming advocates rather than staffed by truth pursuing scientists. It has funding largely from the British taxpayer and the EU. Until there is a clear out of the compromised personnel, not just CRU boss Phil Jones, funding should be halted. Taxpayers should be confident that their money is being used for scientific research, not to fund a cabal of global cooling deniers intent on creating a scientifically unfounded basis for a political project.

QUB is one of the world’s leading centers for tree-ring work, the tree-ring data that QUB has gathered is valuable for studying the global climate during the past 7000 years. For 2 years mathematician Douglas J. Keenan has been battling to get them to release the data unsuccessfully. QUB is throwing up chaff to prevent him having access to the data. They are threatened because they know that all the raw data has been cherry-picked.
Indeed it is far more likely that the only data that ever got put forward was cherry-picked data. The ‘inconvenient’ results that didn’t agree with the pre-determined outcome never even made it into the ‘raw’ dataset.

The only real climatologist to actually measure the real world effects of carbon dioxide on the radiative balance is Professor Lindzen from MIT.
Lindzen is used to being ignored. He was one of the climatologists who opposed the new-ice-age scares in the 1970′s and he opposes the climate alarmism today. He does NOT deny climate change, or that the earth has warmed, or that CO2 is a greenhouse gas, or that CO2 does cause warming. It is the extent of the warming that he disagrees with alarmists over. He does not see any evidence of catastrophic warming being caused by CO2.
Instead of using (and manipulating to propagandise for AGW) computer data, Lindzen has spent decades measuring the actual balance between the energy entering the atmosphere and the energy leaving the atmosphere and looked at the likely mechanisms that ACTUALLY control this balance.
He has observed that The earth’s atmosphere is self-regulating. When more energy comes in, more clouds form at a lower level which reflects energy, just like a natural thermostat, rather that what alarmists claim that clouds form higher up which trap energy.
Although there is significant disagreement within the climate science community about this, I think it is the most likely mechanism.
Either way, it shows that there isn’t scientific consensus about the mechanisms and extent of climate change. Anyone who claims that there is is selling something.

No conspiracy worth launching has fewer than 4 levels. Jones was bought, now will be betrayed, by dark forces with a global political agenda.
Unfortunately, even the most vociferous advocates on ‘either’ side (there are in fact many) present their arguments in ‘easy to digest’ format.
This is only because they are now confident that scientific education in the West has been successfully neutered by socialist ‘compassionate’ measures to ensure that nobody needs to work hard to get qualifications. Certificates for all. Failure is ‘deferred success’. And in most UK universities there are enormous (mainly financial) pressures to adopt the mantra of my first head of department – ‘nobody fails, its bad for business’.
The plain fact is, if I wanted to convince the world of an imminent catastrophe, I would put all of the raw data into the public domain and then argue with other peoples’ interpretation.
I have searched for many hours for raw data and cannot find any that I would not have to pay a lot of money for. I am certain that most of what we are told is just plain lies.
I believe that man does have a small influence on the temperature of the atmosphere. It seems that there has been an very slight trend of warning since the early 1800s – possibly to do with industrialisation but equally likely to be part of the historic cyclic trends.

In the Victoria Infimary in Glasgow a young lad had had an accident, on his push bike I think, banged his head.
He demonstrated all the strange behaviour in your article and was sent away – he had concussion .
I don’t think the young lad survived but I’m sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.
A few years ago my dad (now RIP) had a melonoma on his scalp which required surgery and skin grafting. Dad had suffered several strokes nad had severe arthritis, and was permanently catheterised so mobility was a real problem.
My sister and I ended up taking him from Anglesey to Liverpool by car because no one would arrange an ambulance.
When we got to Liverpool, they took seven hours to admit him to the ward while we waited with Dad in a wheelchair in a bleak waiting room attached to the ward. The nurses refused to help when dad needed a crap as he had not been admitted and it was health and safety rules. We had to manage ourselves, without any expertise, or a lift.
We put up with this quietly, but many people wouldn’t. Now the Hospitals have the power to remove people who complain about this kind of shoddy and disgraceful treatment.
Criticising the NHS will become an offence.
I’m sad to hear of your predicament Moley – it sounds all too familiar as my mother has dementia and imo our local hospital doesn’t want such people in it’s wards. The last time (AND I MEAN IT WAS THE LAST TIME) my mother went into hospital 18 months ago, just about able to walk….when they discharged her – WITHOUT SPEAKING IN PERSON TO A MEMBER OF HER FAMILY – and via a ‘holding area’ alone, for 3 hours, with no food/drink and without the ability to ask for any assistance – she hasn’t walked since…
When I was a child my Aunt was a ward sister on two ‘geriatric’ wards which is where most old people stayed for as long as they needed to….till death usually. The wards were joyous places to spend even Christmas Day which we often did with lovely, happy staff and clean wards…MRSA and CDiff were never mentioned – perhaps they’re just more fear tactics to stop us even going to hospital!!
Then came the change in policy to set up more ‘residential homes’ which often end up being privatized as I’ve said here previously – many sold to US Private Equity companies like B l a c k s t o n e Group…(from personal experience and in the lamestream media/Southern Cross website too).
I endeavour to stay away from ALL sectors of the ‘health’ service (a contradiction in terms lol) if at all possible by maintaining decent as poss diet, exercise and ‘right-thinking’ which I would like to see taught to children at their mother’s knee or failing that, on school curriculums instead of informing our children about the wonders of heroine/cocaine/smack/E etc etc and offering them the ‘morning after pill’ at 12 years of age.
The sad part is that the NHS is a real holocaust. 20-80,000 people a year are killed where mistakes contribute to the deaths. And those are the NHS’s own esitamtes

As someone who does science , and as my other posts have said , its a caused a lot of problems , we always assumed it was based on common interpreted data , and that was why 80% of scientists agreed it was man made global warming , this denial of information is all very new to me . Some very expensive computing has gone into the climate models and this peeling away of the layers of peer review untill we find the solid material , is not what any of us who have worked on this with deep concern want .
However as guido puts very well , tax payer funded crooked science is not what any government should be about . copenhagen now looks like a conference about the wrong questions . CW has been sceptical about carbon trading and off set for some time from the moment that people had to pay to plant a tree to have a less guilty flight . I always thought shouldnt you be planting them anyway !
The less well know scams of peasant farmer land clearances for bio fuel planting in India and the absolutely frightening loss of veitnamise rain forest for palm oil and cheap patio furniture and the new plantations owners under the guise of fuel security .
Turns out its no brainer as untouched mature rain forest never would omitt as much CO2 as burning replacement monoculture palm oil crop year on year .

This is what makes me incandescent with rage. The whole CO2 bollocks is a very very dangerous distraction from very real localised catastrophes. The destruction of ancient forests pushing their inhabitants to the brink of extinction. The real chemical pollution, the island of waste found floating in the Pacific.
We are creating an ever expanding number of shitholes and these are being ignored by the rush to tax and control ordinary individual people.
CO2 is not a pollutant, it is a life giving trace gas and it has been far far higher in the past. In fact the higher it is, the better plants will grow. more crops, more vegetation more varieties of life, more abundance.
What we must tackle is the real damage that mankind has done to the environment, and adding a bit more CO2 into the air is not part of that damage.

Please present you evidence for your assertion that 80% of scientists agreed. It seems suspiciously exact to me. I usually suspect such figures to be sloppily arrived at and have rarely been wrong in assessing work presented to me.
Without wishing to be unkind, I rather suspect that ‘common interpreted data’ comes from the political wing of scientific endeavour that is generally referred to by my friends and colleagues in the science and engineering disciplines as ‘utter bollocks’.

When I worked at a medical training and research institute, we prepared form letters which could easily be adapted to individual requests. We did want to help people, but often had to let them know that we simply didn’t hold data on their request, and always referred them to other sources, or their doctor.

When scientists present a conclusion, they must present their supporting data.
No data means no credibility. Now we know that the entire peer review process was perverted too. It was as stringent as the Vatican asking Franciscan monks if Jesus was the son of God!
The CRU temperature dataset is completely compromised as is any other surface station record linked with it, (GISS) and both satellite records which used the CRU data for calibration.
The reason the data was with-held was NOT because it was idiots asking for it, (and that statement in itself shows how arrogant and unscientific Jones is) but because the data was SO BAD that it undermines the entire hypothesis that the last 50 years were the warmest for the last 1000 years. They clearly were not!
Thank you for your selectively quoted response to an FoI request Alan – and for the display of typical disdain for people who question the information put to them by others, both by yourself and by the writer of the message.
Undoubtedly some requests are going to be at times little more than mendacious or are part of an agenda. But the presentation of the ‘facts’ by the likes of the CRU are now wide open for debate – which you don’t mention.

Anyone who has a garden knows that different plants grow at different rates depending on where they are planted, aspect, the soil quality, the weather and the other plants around them.
Even in my own 2 acre garden in Suffolk the conditions are totally different around the house from the bottom of the garden where we’ve planted an orchard — if micro-climate can differ over a matter of a few hundred yards, how tree rings can be a reliable guide to climatic conditions beats me — for example, maybe there was a high wind 1,000 years ago, trees blew over so the ones left had more light and nutrients and put on more growth… doesn’t mean the climate warmed or cooled.

I was accepting of the science until the CRU emails were leaked. I’ve tried wading through them and certainly some clearly show obstruction of FOI intent, and massaging of the data. They clearly show huge amounts of dishonesty and now I am totally sceptical about man-made global warming.

The gist was “the ice is melting, there will be large scale flooding, this is a given yet the British public is sceptical of the claims”. For “balance” they had a weak opponent of GW, who mouthed platitudes. NOT ONE MENTION of the CRU emails. The most recent factor to make the public sceptical, in my view.
I’ve made an official complaint about bias and unbalanced reporting to the BBC. I know it will make no difference but it made me feel better and if it causes irritation to some Beeboid lacky I’ll feel vindicated.

The ice loss is fairly simple to prove , from polar surveys and satellite info (note i did not mention cause) , the ice sheet thinning is a bit more tricky partly because one pole is floating ice and the other is land galciers and ice shelfs . the worry with greenland is its potententail to shed its galciers quickly , as warming will increase there rate of travell .
The sea currents theories is quite acceptable , as we know deep sea currents come from the polar regions , and war ones are more surface and from the equator .
so its not all good news , i doubt they would be stupid enough on things like arctic and antartic missions to not fiddle measurments , so it certainly seems that if any fiddling has been going off its confined to these key privilidged data sets .

Greenland did not shed it’s interior ice during the medieval warm period, it just formed lakes. Greenland is a massive bowl. The ice at the edges can melt and run off into the sea, most of the ice, if it melted, would form massive lakes in Greenland.

There was an interesting (largely unscripted) exchange on a scientific prog. on R4 the other day. We don’t much challenge our doctors (who are scientists) so why do we listen to expert scientists then think we know better?
First off we probably should challenge our doctors – specifically GPs a lot more. 20 or 30 years identifying and treating the same 10 or 15 illnesses of old age (Oooooh doctor, I’ve got this pain in my wrist…’ that present themselves day-in and day-out doesn’t do much for keeping ‘em on their toes when you present with the early stages of bowel cancer and they send you home with a prescription for paracetomol.
But more importantly – to credit these global warming fuckers as scientists is a fucking disgrace. They’re fucking geographers. They’re absolutely delighted if they can draw a bar chart let alone do any modelling.
They are to the scientific world what Maureen Lipman’s idiot nephew was to science ‘Oooooh – you’ve got an -ology. You get an -ology you’re a scientist’

This is not about listening to scientists and then thinking we know better. As most people who did any science at school may remember, there is a specific method to conducting science, and for any scientific theory to be valid, it MUST conform to certain steps. Central to these steps are the need to have all the data and method available for anyone else to investigate and so that there is reproducibility. There needs to be proper, independent peer-review and everything should be open and above board.
We now know that climate scientists from CRU and NASA GISS and elsewhere did NOT follow normal, scientific procedure. Data has been hidden, corrupted, invented and deleted, the peer-review process has been corrupted and controlled via self-selection of reviewing peers, limiting the review to fellow “believers of the AGW faith” and scientific publications and editors were bullied and threatened.
This is NOT science, this is propaganda.
So we are not listening to scientists and thinking we know better at all. We have been duped by con artists and advocates posing as scientists and we resent this.
Decades of data and science is now suspect and in serious doubt.
Don’t complain.

Tree ring data are a very good way of dating pieces of wood and, therefore, human habitation. The information is essentially ‘digital’, forming a sequence of good, bad and average years’ growth, so that the ‘signal’ can be separated from the ‘noise’ of factors influencing the precise annual growth of an individual tree.
Tree ring data are a poor way of estimating past average temperatures, because tree growth away from the tropics is usually affected only by summer temperatures rather than average ones, but is also affected by many other factors, including rainfall, the growth of nearby trees, the number of beneficial or harmful insects and other animals, soil fertility, casual events such as storms, fires and floods etc. etc. None of these factors is linear in its effects and they interact with each other. They do not ‘average out’ because they can affect large numbers of trees at the same time. Anybody who imagines they can extract the effect of average temperatures from these many other effects is fantasising. You might say that one cannot see the wood for the trees.
There are other proxies available for estimating past average temperatures, but they tend not to give the results that scientists want. The famous ‘hockey stick’ graph relied for its upturn mainly on a handful of (carefully selected) tree-ring measurements.
It was only 10 trees, one of which skewed the entire set.

The idea was that they selected trees growing at the limit of their range – eg pine trees near the top of mountains in the US, trees on the edge of the tundra etc – to try and eliminate these effects, but there really isn’t any proof that this works. Especially since they have problems matching current temperature trends (measured) with current growth rings. Hence the “hiding the decline” quote, which I think was about recent tree ring measurements showing a decrease in temperature when in fact it is measured to be going up.
I don’t have a problem with CO2 increasing temperature (by some degree), but the historic data is crucial in order to determine whether current change really is that different from the past. The end of the ice age occured over a shockingly short period of time (a few decades at the very most), and it didn’t wipe out life on earth. The previous interglacial was about 5C warmer than present according to various other proxies (ice cores, pollen, insects etc etc).

John – I think you’ve been bullshitted by a small cabal of ‘scientists’ who have carved themselves a gravy-train of public money, and are terrified of losing that gravy train if they tell you the real truth. They can’t really fully explain the climate and it’s changes, they’ve fiddled their computer models (the publication of the UEA one on the internet proves this beyond any doubt) so that the results from their models fit what they want them to fit, so the veracity of those models is in serious doubt. They have their research peer-reviewed only by their mates, not by the wider scientific community.
The real truth is that we don’t really know exactly why the planet warms and cools, we don’t really know if man’s activities have affected it, and we don’t really know what the climate will do in the future.
Research continues, but unless it happens in an honest and open way, it’s results will always be tainted and questionable.

Climate science – how is it that some have become so fixed in their view that changes to the climate are going to be catastrophic to human life? Could it be more to do with political belief than hard scientific evidence?
Is climate changing? Yes, of course it is; it always has changed one way or another, and it always will.
Is it warming, cooling, or staying the same? Well, it seems that this question is not settled.
If it is warming, is it down to the actions of mankind? Again, an argument not settled.
What controls climate? The only honest answer is that we don’t fully understand, yet. We can build computer models that simulate it, but there is concern that some, at least, of these models contain ‘fiddle factors’ that make their results debateable at best, and virtually invalid at worst.
What should we do? Scientifically, carry on researching, and publish in such a way that raw data and conclusions drawn by analysis can be openly assessed by all, not just by a small cabal. Politically, pause and consider, and only act in ways that can be honestly supported by proven data. Practically, carry on trying to develop less polluting and energy-intensive ways of living life, but don’t give up the real benefits that science and technology has brought to mankind without very good reason.
