CRU Boss Stands Aside, Queens University Blocking Data FOI

CRU boss Phil Jones is standing down while the university investigation reviews the Climategate emails.  He should be a scientific pariah for this one email alone “I can’t see either … being in the next [IPCC] report. Kevin [Trenberth] and I will keep them out somehow – even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!” Science is all about conjectures and refutations, if climate scientists try to close down debate* it undermines public confidence.  The public might not understand the calculus of thermodynamics, but it understands snake oil salesmanship when it sees it…

Phil Jones CRU Climate Cooling Denier

The CRU is a taxpayer funded body which is now exposed as not fit for purpose, compromised by global warming advocates rather than staffed by truth pursuing scientists. It has funding largely from the British taxpayer and the EU. Until there is a clear out of the compromised personnel, not just CRU boss Phil Jones, funding should be halted. Taxpayers should be confident that their money is being used for scientific research, not to fund a cabal of global cooling deniers intent on creating a scientifically unfounded basis for a political project.

There is similar issue developing at Queens University Belfast (QUB), where once again global warming alarmist scientists are blocking Freedom of Information requests.  QUB is one of the world’s leading centers for tree-ring work, the tree-ring data that QUB has gathered is valuable for studying the global climate during the past 7000 years. For 2 years mathematician Douglas J. Keenan has been battling to get them to release the data unsuccessfully.  QUB is throwing up chaff to prevent him having access to the data.  Why do they feel so threatened by external review of their data?

*Guido is looking forward to tomorrow’s George Monbiot v James Delingpole debate* being organised by Index on Censorship : “Saying the unsayable: is climate scepticism the new Holocaust denial?” Thursday, 3 December, 6.30 – 8pm, Free Word Centre, 60 Farringdon Road.  RSVP to: bookings@freewordonline.com, more details here.

Indeed it is far more likely that the only data that ever got put forward was cherry-picked data. The ‘inconvenient’ results that didn’t agree with the pre-determined outcome never even made it into the ‘raw’ dataset.

That’s what I’d do if I was rigging a dataset.

I would personally like to shake the hands of – no, in fact give a big congratulatory hug to John Ingham who wrote the following brave article; Prof Ian Plimer for being brave enough to speak the truth and to the much maligned Daily Express for also being brave enough and going against the agenda to dupe the planet into a carbon trading, illegal, immoral and downright criminal nightmare future for us all.

If only the police, military and judiciary were as brave by standing up and against tyranny instead of ‘just following orders’…..and as for the BBC – it continues to prove itself the mouthpiece of globalists with malintent.
GMTV mentioned the Express headline and two other similar articles in other papers the names of which I missed so well done GMTV too – even if it was prior to 0600 and post 0700 the newspapers remained firmly on the coffee table out of sight.

CLIMATE CHANGE ROCKED Weds 2nd December by John Ingham

“THE scientific consensus that mankind has caused climate change was rocked yesterday as a leading academic called it a “load of hot air underpinned by fraud”.

Professor Ian Plimer condemned the climate change lobby as “climate comrades” keeping the “gravy train” going.

In a controversial talk just days before the start of a climate summit attended by world leaders in Copenhagen, Prof Plimer said Governments were treating the public like “fools” and using climate change to increase taxes.”

Thanks also to Guido for also ‘standing up’ and posting several articles and allowing our views on ‘MMGW’ ‘Climategate’ (the scam to end all scams, imo of course!)

Those who ‘know’ about the global agenda won’t be surprised to see that the yacht that strayed into Iranian waters was manned by ‘Team PINDAR’!!!! Maketh it uppeth I couldeth noteth!

          Get A Life says:

A platoon was marching north of Fallujah when they came upon an Iraqi insurgent, badly injured and unconscious.

On the opposite side of the road was a British soldier in a similar but less serious state.

The soldier was conscious and alert and as first aid was given to both men, the platoon commander asked the injured soldier what had happened.

The soldier reported, “I was moving north along the highway here, and coming south was a heavily armed insurgent. We saw each other and both took cover in the ditches along the road.

I yelled to him that Saddam Hussein was a miserable, lowlife scum bag who got what he deserved, and he yelled back that Gordon Brown is a fat fcuk wit and a good-for-nothing, left wing half-blind Jock, and Lord Mandelson is a cross-dressing power mad idiot.

So I said that Osama Bin Laden dresses and acts like a frigid, mean-spirited lesbian.

He retaliated by yelling, “Oh yeah? Well, so does Harriet Harman!”

“And, there we were, in the middle of the road, shaking hands, when a bus hit us.”

And then it was this cherry-picked data that was fed into the IPCC computerised climate models and these models were programmed to react according to this falsified data.

No wonder that NONE of the IPCC model projections managed to show the past decade of cooling!

Although the CRU cannot understand why not and they believe it is a travesty that they cannot!

        GIGO! Garbage in, Garbage out!

The only real climatologist to actually measure the real world effects of carbon dioxide on the radiative balance is Professor Lindzen from MIT.

Lindzen is used to being ignored. He was one of the climatologists who opposed the new-ice-age scares in the 1970′s and he opposes the climate alarmism today. He does NOT deny climate change, or that the earth has warmed, or that CO2 is a greenhouse gas, or that CO2 does cause warming. It is the extent of the warming that he disagrees with alarmists over. He does not see any evidence of catastrophic warming being caused by CO2.

Instead of using (and manipulating to propagandise for AGW) computer data, Lindzen has spent decades measuring the actual balance between the energy entering the atmosphere and the energy leaving the atmosphere and looked at the likely mechanisms that ACTUALLY control this balance.

He has observed that The earth’s atmosphere is self-regulating. When more energy comes in, more clouds form at a lower level which reflects energy, just like a natural thermostat, rather that what alarmists claim that clouds form higher up which trap energy.

Although there is significant disagreement within the climate science community about this, I think it is the most likely mechanism.

Either way, it shows that there isn’t scientific consensus about the mechanisms and extent of climate change. Anyone who claims that there is is selling something.

I’ve been watching this for a while and the guys at climateaudit having been chasing Phil Jones for quite a while. Here’s a post from the end of July, with my favourite comment #3.

        http://www.climateaudit.org/?p=6673

“Hmmm…I can see a scenario playing out here:

“You’ve deleted the data, but I have a copy from when it was up, and it doesn’t support your conclusions, there are errors.”

“You don’t have the real, complete data, we have the complete data and it supports our conclusions.”

“Show me the complete data then if mine is erroneous.”

“We can’t show you the data, it’s secret, we have confidentiality agreements, showing it to you would destroy Science.”

        “I’ll file a FOI request.”

“Oops, we deleted the data completely! Our bad.”

shows you what a charlatan Phil Jones is.

Try using that at a defence of a PhD viva!

No conspiracy worth launching has fewer than 4 levels. Jones was bought, now will be betrayed, by dark forces with a global political agenda.

Unfortunately, even the most vociferous advocates on ‘either’ side (there are in fact many) present their arguments in ‘easy to digest’ format.

This is only because they are now confident that scientific education in the West has been successfully neutered by socialist ‘compassionate’ measures to ensure that nobody needs to work hard to get qualifications. Certificates for all. Failure is ‘deferred success’. And in most UK universities there are enormous (mainly financial) pressures to adopt the mantra of my first head of department – ‘nobody fails, its bad for business’.

The plain fact is, if I wanted to convince the world of an imminent catastrophe, I would put all of the raw data into the public domain and then argue with other peoples’ interpretation.

I have searched for many hours for raw data and cannot find any that I would not have to pay a lot of money for. I am certain that most of what we are told is just plain lies.

I believe that man does have a small influence on the temperature of the atmosphere. It seems that there has been an very slight trend of warning since the early 1800s – possibly to do with industrialisation but equally likely to be part of the historic cyclic trends.

A few years ago my dad (now RIP) had a melonoma on his scalp which required surgery and skin grafting. Dad had suffered several strokes nad had severe arthritis, and was permanently catheterised so mobility was a real problem.
My sister and I ended up taking him from Anglesey to Liverpool by car because no one would arrange an ambulance.

When we got to Liverpool, they took seven hours to admit him to the ward while we waited with Dad in a wheelchair in a bleak waiting room attached to the ward. The nurses refused to help when dad needed a crap as he had not been admitted and it was health and safety rules. We had to manage ourselves, without any expertise, or a lift.

We put up with this quietly, but many people wouldn’t. Now the Hospitals have the power to remove people who complain about this kind of shoddy and disgraceful treatment.
Criticising the NHS will become an offence.

I’m sad to hear of your predicament Moley – it sounds all too familiar as my mother has dementia and imo our local hospital doesn’t want such people in it’s wards. The last time (AND I MEAN IT WAS THE LAST TIME) my mother went into hospital 18 months ago, just about able to walk….when they discharged her – WITHOUT SPEAKING IN PERSON TO A MEMBER OF HER FAMILY – and via a ‘holding area’ alone, for 3 hours, with no food/drink and without the ability to ask for any assistance – she hasn’t walked since…

When I was a child my Aunt was a ward sister on two ‘geriatric’ wards which is where most old people stayed for as long as they needed to….till death usually. The wards were joyous places to spend even Christmas Day which we often did with lovely, happy staff and clean wards…MRSA and CDiff were never mentioned – perhaps they’re just more fear tactics to stop us even going to hospital!!

Then came the change in policy to set up more ‘residential homes’ which often end up being privatized as I’ve said here previously – many sold to US Private Equity companies like B l a c k s t o n e Group…(from personal experience and in the lamestream media/Southern Cross website too).

I endeavour to stay away from ALL sectors of the ‘health’ service (a contradiction in terms lol) if at all possible by maintaining decent as poss diet, exercise and ‘right-thinking’ which I would like to see taught to children at their mother’s knee or failing that, on school curriculums instead of informing our children about the wonders of heroine/cocaine/smack/E etc etc and offering them the ‘morning after pill’ at 12 years of age.

As someone who does science , and as my other posts have said , its a caused a lot of problems , we always assumed it was based on common interpreted data , and that was why 80% of scientists agreed it was man made global warming , this denial of information is all very new to me . Some very expensive computing has gone into the climate models and this peeling away of the layers of peer review untill we find the solid material , is not what any of us who have worked on this with deep concern want .

However as guido puts very well , tax payer funded crooked science is not what any government should be about . copenhagen now looks like a conference about the wrong questions . CW has been sceptical about carbon trading and off set for some time from the moment that people had to pay to plant a tree to have a less guilty flight . I always thought shouldnt you be planting them anyway !

The less well know scams of peasant farmer land clearances for bio fuel planting in India and the absolutely frightening loss of veitnamise rain forest for palm oil and cheap patio furniture and the new plantations owners under the guise of fuel security .

Turns out its no brainer as untouched mature rain forest never would omitt as much CO2 as burning replacement monoculture palm oil crop year on year .

even if global warming is not so man made , industrial pollution and sanitation on fresh water rivers is , some of these are long term damage which carbon credits and copenhagen will not adress .

This is what makes me incandescent with rage. The whole CO2 bollocks is a very very dangerous distraction from very real localised catastrophes. The destruction of ancient forests pushing their inhabitants to the brink of extinction. The real chemical pollution, the island of waste found floating in the Pacific.

We are creating an ever expanding number of shitholes and these are being ignored by the rush to tax and control ordinary individual people.

CO2 is not a pollutant, it is a life giving trace gas and it has been far far higher in the past. In fact the higher it is, the better plants will grow. more crops, more vegetation more varieties of life, more abundance.

What we must tackle is the real damage that mankind has done to the environment, and adding a bit more CO2 into the air is not part of that damage.

Please explain, CW, what ‘common interpreted data’ is?

Since you ‘do science’, does it come after ‘primary data’, before ‘secondary data’, before or after both.

Please present you evidence for your assertion that 80% of scientists agreed. It seems suspiciously exact to me. I usually suspect such figures to be sloppily arrived at and have rarely been wrong in assessing work presented to me.

Without wishing to be unkind, I rather suspect that ‘common interpreted data’ comes from the political wing of scientific endeavour that is generally referred to by my friends and colleagues in the science and engineering disciplines as ‘utter bollocks’.

The whole AGW debacle is hinged upon these spurious, made up, pseudo science statements designed to ‘impress’ the public. And the AGW believers have the nerve to accuse sceptics that they are unscientific.

      “Dear Mr. McIntyre,

I gather that your intent is to “audit” the findings of our
recently-published paper in the International Journal of Climatology
(IJoC). You are of course free to do so. I note that both the gridded
model and observational datasets used in our IJoC paper are freely
available to researchers. You should have no problem in accessing
exactly the same model and observational datasets that we employed. You
will need to do a little work in order to calculate synthetic Microwave
Sounding Unit (MSU) temperatures from climate model atmospheric
temperature information. This should not pose any difficulties for you.
Algorithms for calculating synthetic MSU temperatures have been
published by ourselves and others in the peer-reviewed literature. You
will also need to calculate spatially-averaged temperature changes from
the gridded model and observational data. Again, that should not be too
      taxing.

In summary, you have access to all the raw information that you require
in order to determine whether the conclusions reached in our IJoC paper
are sound or unsound. I see no reason why I should do your work for you,
and provide you with derived quantities (zonal means, synthetic MSU
temperatures, etc.) which you can easily compute yourself.

I am copying this email to all co-authors of the 2008 Santer et al. IJoC
paper, as well as to Professor Glenn McGregor at IJoC.

I gather that you have appointed yourself as an independent arbiter of
the appropriate use of statistical tools in climate research. Rather
that “auditing” our paper, you should be directing your attention to the
2007 IJoC paper published by David Douglass et al., which contains an
      egregious statistical error.

Please do not communicate with me in the future.

Well, that’t part of the problem isn’t it? Their datasets, their “peer-review”.

If you don’t want to comply with FOI requests, then don’t accept a penny from the public purse. Simple. You can make up anything you want and tell FOI requesters to eff off when they ask to see your data.

“Well sometimes the data isn’t there’s to release.
But more often than not the people asking for it are idiots and timewasters. ”
Then say that, “sorry, we actually don’t hold the data you request etc. etc. perhaps it may be available at …….”

When I worked at a medical training and research institute, we prepared form letters which could easily be adapted to individual requests. We did want to help people, but often had to let them know that we simply didn’t hold data on their request, and always referred them to other sources, or their doctor.

“But more often than not the people asking for it are idiots and timewasters” – who are paying your wages, asshole.

      • 231
        Archer Karcher says:

They cannot release the data, because it would show they have all been complicite in a fraud. That in turn would mean government funding drying up and criminal charges being laid.

I laugh when extremist greens bleat about oil companies funding “deniers”, the US government has spent $89 billion on attempting to prove AGW and has failed miserably.
None of the government sponsored climate models in the entire world predicted the last ten years cooling, not one.

Yet we are supposed to believe somehow AGW is real, is driven by CO2, will destroy the world as we know it, yet while CO2 continues to rise every year ( according to their own rigged figures ) somehow, AGW has gone on holiday for the last decade and may well be on “holiday” for the next 30 years.

        What utter tripe.

      • 253
        Mr Ned says:

Well it is not good enough to say, we got the data from here, you go get it too!

When scientists present a conclusion, they must present their supporting data.

No data means no credibility. Now we know that the entire peer review process was perverted too. It was as stringent as the Vatican asking Franciscan monks if Jesus was the son of God!

The CRU temperature dataset is completely compromised as is any other surface station record linked with it, (GISS) and both satellite records which used the CRU data for calibration.

The reason the data was with-held was NOT because it was idiots asking for it, (and that statement in itself shows how arrogant and unscientific Jones is) but because the data was SO BAD that it undermines the entire hypothesis that the last 50 years were the warmest for the last 1000 years. They clearly were not!

        Animal says:

Thank you for your selectively quoted response to an FoI request Alan – and for the display of typical disdain for people who question the information put to them by others, both by yourself and by the writer of the message.

Undoubtedly some requests are going to be at times little more than mendacious or are part of an agenda. But the presentation of the ‘facts’ by the likes of the CRU are now wide open for debate – which you don’t mention.

The message you published reinforced the hacked CRU email exchanges where McIntyre is described by Ben Santer as a ‘jerk’ – hardly the foundations of a friendly reply you may gather. In fact, let’s take a look at the request made by Steve McIntyre:

        “Dear Dr Santer,

Could you please provide me either with the monthly model data (49
series) used for statistical analysis in Santer et al 2008 or a link to
a URL. I understand that your version has been collated from PCMDI ; my
interest is in a file of the data as you used it (I presume that the
monthly data used for statistics is about 1-2 MB) .

        Thank you for your attention,

        Steve McIntyre”

Perhaps it doesn’t leap off the page to you, but in my eyes I can see a request being made – rather politely – from Steve McIntyre who is then treated to a patronising and childish reply from Ben Santer. I’m aware that these Academic types can lack some of the social skills others in the real world take for granted but, dear me, what a particularly unprofessional and discourteous reply!

However, the text from Ben Santer does helpfuly illustrate the closed minds and deliberate stonewalling by most – if not all – of those involved with climate change studies of anyone who dares to question their work, which do not forget is paid handsomely by public funds.

Does your example message show that FoI requests are more often than not made by idiots and timewasters? I rather doubt it. Unless you factor in Labour MPs repeatedly asking for expnse claims by army top brass of course.

        • 331
          Alan says:

I think it’s a polite but firm response pointing out that the data is out there and that the person who requests it will have be of a certain scientific ability to understand it.
Given they’re not bright enough to understand this for themselves I’m surprised the response wasn’t a great deal shorter.

As for you “SarahN” ““But more often than not the people asking for it are idiots and timewasters” – who are paying your wages, asshole.”
You don’t pay my wages. I have my own company and make a nice little sum thanks for asking. But I do know about science. And I’m also happy my profits helped pay for the little stick you attach to your head to help bang out your “thoughts” on the keyboard.

The recent moves by those opposed to climate change on political grounds (why is Guido talking about this? He can disagree with the politics and what to do, that’s what he knows about. But him and most posters haven’t a clue what these emails mean) to start demanding “raw” data and use the FOA are just bizarre.

You don’t know what you are talking about. You could no more understand this data than Guido.

So you are of the opinion that most posters do not understand the published emails, believe I do not know what I am talking about and that this is all far too much for our little minds? That making such requests is not so much about ensuring there is honesty and clarity as being just a waste of time from ignorant, time-wasting idiots?

So,so wrong. And such a terrible mindset to adopt.

          • SarahN says:

Actually Alan, I do know what I’m talking about. I worked for years complying with access to sensitive data requests and helping people who often came to us with complicated and repetitive questions.
Unlike you, though, I never assumed that being better educated than the average person in the street made me too special or clever to help them.
That’s the basic difference between an intelligent person and an arrogant fuckwit. Are you smart enough to figure out which of those terms best describes you?

      • 330
        Budgie says:

Alan, you omit the fact that a rigorous audit requires not just the raw data, and not just the calculation methods, but also the assumptions behind the way the data is treated. Normal scientific and technical papers cite all their assumptions as well as references. Why won’t you AGW believers? Something to hide?

yes yes. read Ian Plimer’s book called Heaven and Earth….not just the Cambrian but also the Carboniferous period enjoyed exceptionally high CO2 levels..we have found no evidence (to date) of paleozoic steel mills and coal fired power stations. global warming does happen, as does global cooling (ref. glacier striations on rocks in Mauritania, e.g.). there is no anthropological correlation.
differing opinions on this subject should not really bother me. but as a taxpayer it does.

        The New Labour Creed

I believe in Tony the Father Almighty,
        Saviour of heaven and earth:
        {Just 16 days left but Gordon will manage to sort it all out somehow.}

And in Gordon his only unwanted Son of the Manse

        Our Gord,
Who was conceived by the Unholy host, Lord Peter
        Born of the Virgin Harriet,
        Suffered with his Moral Compass,
Was crucified, dead, and buried in the opinion polls
        He descended into the bunker;
        The third day he relaunched again from the dead;
He ascended into Europe, and embraced climate change as a new religion
        And we all now sitteth on the right hand of Gord the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to fudge and trick and make us misled.

        I believe in the Holy Ghost;
        The holy multi-cultural Church;
        The Communion of personal restraints;
        The Forgiveness of spins;
        The Resurrection of the reputation,{anyone can come back in this government..}
        And the Lie everlasting.

        Amen.

Even in my own 2 acre garden in Suffolk the conditions are totally different around the house from the bottom of the garden where we’ve planted an orchard — if micro-climate can differ over a matter of a few hundred yards, how tree rings can be a reliable guide to climatic conditions beats me — for example, maybe there was a high wind 1,000 years ago, trees blew over so the ones left had more light and nutrients and put on more growth… doesn’t mean the climate warmed or cooled.

In my mind this is a bigger scandal than MP’s expenses. Copenhagen will set Governments on a course to introduce a whole raft of green taxes. We shall get them whoever is in power. CMD has taken the environmentalist pill and is converted.

I was accepting of the science until the CRU emails were leaked. I’ve tried wading through them and certainly some clearly show obstruction of FOI intent, and massaging of the data. They clearly show huge amounts of dishonesty and now I am totally sceptical about man-made global warming.

The MSM are totally in the mindset that MMGW is a given. Last night’s BBC six o’clock news carried a story about GW by David Shukman. The gist was “the ice is melting, there will be large scale flooding, this is a given yet the British public is sceptical of the claims”. For “balance” they had a weak opponent of GW, who mouthed platitudes. NOT ONE MENTION of the CRU emails. The most recent factor to make the public sceptical, in my view.

I’ve made an official complaint about bias and unbalanced reporting to the BBC. I know it will make no difference but it made me feel better and if it causes irritation to some Beeboid lacky I’ll feel vindicated.

    Sorry for ranting

    • 30
      caesars wife says:

The ice loss is fairly simple to prove , from polar surveys and satellite info (note i did not mention cause) , the ice sheet thinning is a bit more tricky partly because one pole is floating ice and the other is land galciers and ice shelfs . the worry with greenland is its potententail to shed its galciers quickly , as warming will increase there rate of travell .

The sea currents theories is quite acceptable , as we know deep sea currents come from the polar regions , and war ones are more surface and from the equator .

so its not all good news , i doubt they would be stupid enough on things like arctic and antartic missions to not fiddle measurments , so it certainly seems that if any fiddling has been going off its confined to these key privilidged data sets .

re thinking policy should now turn to growth , CW says not so fast this doesnt prove that further problems arnt on the way .

Greenland did not shed it’s interior ice during the medieval warm period, it just formed lakes. Greenland is a massive bowl. The ice at the edges can melt and run off into the sea, most of the ice, if it melted, would form massive lakes in Greenland.

          caesars wife says:

so how come most of its glaciers run into the sea ?? and dont just it in the bowl !! it doesnt appear to br running uphill

          • SarahN says:

Sorry for the long quote, it’s from the Snow and Ice Data Center (http://nsidc.org).
“The sheer weight of a thick layer of ice and the fact that it deforms as a “plastic” material, combined with gravity’s influence, causes glaciers to flow very slowly. Ice may flow down mountain valleys, fan across plains, or in some locations, spread out to the sea. Movement along the underside of a glacier is slower than movement at the top due to the friction created as it slides along the ground’s surface.

Glaciers periodically retreat or advance, depending on the amount of snow accumulation or albation that occurs. This retreat or advance refers only to the position of the terminus, or snout, of the glacier. Even as it retreats, the glacier still deforms and moves downslope, like a conveyor belt. For most glaciers, retreating and advancing are very slow occurrences, noticeable only over a long time. However, when glaciers retreat rapidly, movement may be visible over a few months or years. For instance, massive glacier retreat has been recorded in Glacier Bay, Alaska. Other glaciers have been photographed at intervals showing dramatic recession.

Alternatively, glaciers may surge, racing forward several meters per day for weeks or even months. In 1986, the Hubbard Glacier in Alaska began to surge at the rate of 10 meters per day across the mouth of Russell Fiord. In only two months, the glacier had dammed water in the fjord and created a lake. This illustrates how quickly a surging glacier can change its surroundings.”

The important thing to note is that glacial activity is not only dependent on termperature.

There was an interesting (largely unscripted) exchange on a scientific prog. on R4 the other day. We don’t much challenge our doctors (who are scientists) so why do we listen to expert scientists then think we know better?

      • 85
        jgm2 says:

First off we probably should challenge our doctors – specifically GPs a lot more. 20 or 30 years identifying and treating the same 10 or 15 illnesses of old age (Oooooh doctor, I’ve got this pain in my wrist…’ that present themselves day-in and day-out doesn’t do much for keeping ‘em on their toes when you present with the early stages of bowel cancer and they send you home with a prescription for paracetomol.

But more importantly – to credit these global warming fuckers as scientists is a fucking disgrace. They’re fucking geographers. They’re absolutely delighted if they can draw a bar chart let alone do any modelling.

They are to the scientific world what Maureen Lipman’s idiot nephew was to science ‘Oooooh – you’ve got an -ology. You get an -ology you’re a scientist’

      • 100
        Mr Ned says:

“o why do we listen to expert scientists then think we know better?”

This is not about listening to scientists and then thinking we know better. As most people who did any science at school may remember, there is a specific method to conducting science, and for any scientific theory to be valid, it MUST conform to certain steps. Central to these steps are the need to have all the data and method available for anyone else to investigate and so that there is reproducibility. There needs to be proper, independent peer-review and everything should be open and above board.

We now know that climate scientists from CRU and NASA GISS and elsewhere did NOT follow normal, scientific procedure. Data has been hidden, corrupted, invented and deleted, the peer-review process has been corrupted and controlled via self-selection of reviewing peers, limiting the review to fellow “believers of the AGW faith” and scientific publications and editors were bullied and threatened.

This is NOT science, this is propaganda.

So we are not listening to scientists and thinking we know better at all. We have been duped by con artists and advocates posing as scientists and we resent this.

Decades of data and science is now suspect and in serious doubt.

    Sir William Waad says:

Tree ring data are a very good way of dating pieces of wood and, therefore, human habitation. The information is essentially ‘digital’, forming a sequence of good, bad and average years’ growth, so that the ‘signal’ can be separated from the ‘noise’ of factors influencing the precise annual growth of an individual tree.

Tree ring data are a poor way of estimating past average temperatures, because tree growth away from the tropics is usually affected only by summer temperatures rather than average ones, but is also affected by many other factors, including rainfall, the growth of nearby trees, the number of beneficial or harmful insects and other animals, soil fertility, casual events such as storms, fires and floods etc. etc. None of these factors is linear in its effects and they interact with each other. They do not ‘average out’ because they can affect large numbers of trees at the same time. Anybody who imagines they can extract the effect of average temperatures from these many other effects is fantasising. You might say that one cannot see the wood for the trees.

There are other proxies available for estimating past average temperatures, but they tend not to give the results that scientists want. The famous ‘hockey stick’ graph relied for its upturn mainly on a handful of (carefully selected) tree-ring measurements.

      Exactly. Good post.

The idea was that they selected trees growing at the limit of their range – eg pine trees near the top of mountains in the US, trees on the edge of the tundra etc – to try and eliminate these effects, but there really isn’t any proof that this works. Especially since they have problems matching current temperature trends (measured) with current growth rings. Hence the “hiding the decline” quote, which I think was about recent tree ring measurements showing a decrease in temperature when in fact it is measured to be going up.

I don’t have a problem with CO2 increasing temperature (by some degree), but the historic data is crucial in order to determine whether current change really is that different from the past. The end of the ice age occured over a shockingly short period of time (a few decades at the very most), and it didn’t wipe out life on earth. The previous interglacial was about 5C warmer than present according to various other proxies (ice cores, pollen, insects etc etc).

Stop trashing ecosystems – yes. Otherwise any climate change (natural or ‘unnatural’) will cause problems. Nobody wants to live in a sh*th0le.

Politicised science and ‘end of the world’ doomsayers – no thanks.

Yes. The famous bristlecone pines grow in places that are not only cold but have unusually irregular rainfall, so their growth is limited by that factor as much as, or more than, by temperature.

By the way, I forgot to mention carbon dioxide. This makes green plants grow faster. It is a form of airborne fertiliser and is also essential to human life – you would die if you had no CO2 in your body.

No one is denying that global warming is a fact. As is global cooling. Both have been occurring since the the planet was formed.

CO2 as a cause rather than a by-product though? Dream on. Just a convenient excuse to tax the masses, rich and poor alike. £38 billion in tax revenue raised annually in this country alone from fuel duty justified as an anti-AGW tax? Based on data provided by (now) thoroughly discredited IPCC “experts”? Add all the other “green taxes” and do some sums.

Here’s an “inconvenient truth”: Between 1810 and 2009 the atmosphere’s CO2 content rose from 200 to 400 parts per million. However, during the first 50 years of this cycle it rose by 80ppm (40% of the total increase). Any guesses as to what influence this had on global temperatures? Err…basically fuck all. Listening to these so-called scientists trying to invent reasons for this unavoidable anomaly is no different from creationists extolling why the world is only 6000 years old and Darwin was a loon.

Anthropologic (Man-Made) GW is a great earner, both for governments and those employed to “prove” its existence. Its huge business if you are in the loop. And woe betide you if you are a qualified scientist trying to get a research grant to disprove the “theory” – you will find yourself penniless and laughed at by this quasi-religious movement. jgm2 says:

No MB. You are wrong. Labour is desperate to kid on that the UK’s bust is some complex series of events that were completely unforeseeable. But they’re not. They are as simple as a massive asset bubble and folk borrowing ever more insane amounts of magic money. And when they could no longer borrow any more money the whole thing collapsed.

        It really is that simple.

The reason HBOS and RBS etc couldn’t roll their loans over was because finally the penny dropped and nobody believed that the mortgage assets they had were worth a candle. Because the ‘assets’ were underpinned by nothing except the insanely optimistic values that they’d been driven up to in the housing asset boom.

It is/was and remains a massive housing bubble and the rest of the shit is just flak to distract from the fact that he made exactly the same mistakes as the Tories in 1988-1992 of confusing house price rises for real prosperity.

Which is why the whole focus is on underpinning the insane over-valuations by slashing interests rates (to make the mortgage affordable) .

All the rest of the Brownian bullshit is just obfuscation.

Housing asset bubble. Same as Ireland. Same as Spain. Same as the US.

There is no ‘started in America’. Its started right here.

      Engineer says:

John – I think you’ve been bullshitted by a small cabal of ‘scientists’ who have carved themselves a gravy-train of public money, and are terrified of losing that gravy train if they tell you the real truth. They can’t really fully explain the climate and it’s changes, they’ve fiddled their computer models (the publication of the UEA one on the internet proves this beyond any doubt) so that the results from their models fit what they want them to fit, so the veracity of those models is in serious doubt. They have their research peer-reviewed only by their mates, not by the wider scientific community.

The real truth is that we don’t really know exactly why the planet warms and cools, we don’t really know if man’s activities have affected it, and we don’t really know what the climate will do in the future.

Research continues, but unless it happens in an honest and open way, it’s results will always be tainted and questionable.

  68. 289
    Engineer says:

It’s taken quite a while to read this thread. Some considered and thoughtful posts, and some outright unthinking bigotry, among the usual humour.

Climate science – how is it that some have become so fixed in their view that changes to the climate are going to be catastrophic to human life? Could it be more to do with political belief than hard scientific evidence?

Is climate changing? Yes, of course it is; it always has changed one way or another, and it always will.

Is it warming, cooling, or staying the same? Well, it seems that this question is not settled.

If it is warming, is it down to the actions of mankind? Again, an argument not settled.

What controls climate? The only honest answer is that we don’t fully understand, yet. We can build computer models that simulate it, but there is concern that some, at least, of these models contain ‘fiddle factors’ that make their results debateable at best, and virtually invalid at worst.

What should we do? Scientifically, carry on researching, and publish in such a way that raw data and conclusions drawn by analysis can be openly assessed by all, not just by a small cabal. Politically, pause and consider, and only act in ways that can be honestly supported by proven data. Practically, carry on trying to develop less polluting and energy-intensive ways of living life, but don’t give up the real benefits that science and technology has brought to mankind without very good reason.

Manmade global warming is a tax raising scam, right?

All it requires is the coordinated effort of almost every government for the first time in history, and the cooperation of all of the world’s leading scientific institutions such as the Royal Society and NASA. The vast majority of climate scientists are also in on the scam, apparently happy to jeopardise their reputations and careers in order to grab a bit of grant funding. And not one of them has blown the whistle.

I think manmade global warming is more believeable, to be honest.

I could accept that some researchers might be on the fiddle, you know say the right thing and get a grant to keep the department open a little longer, but almost all of them?
        It doesn’t make sense.

I have worked in a university research dept in the past (nothing to do with GW) and getting these people to agree on ANYTHING is virtually impossible. Your typical academic is a pompous egotist for whom publication, academic standing and reputation is everything. Believe me if a credible scientist in this area came up with irrefutable proof that manmade GW wasn’t happening, there would be no shutting him up.

As I said you might get the odd one who would cook the books in exchange for a bung but I have never met such a person and I find it impossible to believe that the vast majority of climate researchers are behaving in this way. With no whistleblowers. Its just not credible.

““I can’t see either … being in the next [IPCC] report. Kevin [Trenberth] and I will keep them out somehow – even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!””

This is perfectly justified statement if the paper in question is rubbish and was only published due to lapse of editorial control. A lapse which eventually led to multiple editors resigning in protest. If anything the real scandal was how the paper got published in the first place.

The last part is clearly a joke by the way, noone can “redefine” peer review.

So Phil Jones stepped down as Director High Priest of the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit pending an investigation. Well, if his AGW projections don’t hold up, at least he knows that his legacy will live on with his groundbreaking New & Improved CRU Scientific Method. I was able to reverse engineered the East Anglia CRU Scientific Methodology from the procedures documented in the purloined e-mails and code. It is clear to me that they have built on the work of maverick chemist Theodore Hapner, who revolutionized thinking about the scientific method in 2006. Godspeed Phil Jones.
