Carousel: Week Ending 2nd April 2010
[ 2 April 2010 ]
Hey baby! Working is overrated! Especially on a Friday. Allow me to distract you! Here are some rad things that I (& your fellow nonpareils!) have found around the internet this week. Let’s go!
Susie Bubble’s new legwarmers are extremely excellent. I want some!
Washington Ballet put out a book & it looks incredibly beautiful.
Want to hallucinate at home? Try the Ganzfeld procedure! Cheap & safe, & no risk of jumping off a building. Probably!
Free advice: show up early. You should read this. Everyone should read this!
Create luck, embrace chance & tune in to your serendipity. Amber Rae knows what’s up!
How to be a positive person, in under 300 words from Zen Habits.
30 habits that will change your life. Which of these do you follow already?
Science continues to back up what we already inherently know — Staying optimistic keeps you healthy & junk food as addictive as heroin & smoking.
Yuli’s post, What Do Social Media and The Aquarian Age Have In Common? is FREAKING AMAZING! Read this! It’s so good.
The Sandra Bullock Trade from the New York Times ends up really being a piece about what creates the most happiness in a person’s life. Viz:
“If the relationship between money and well-being is complicated, the correspondence between personal relationships and happiness is not. The daily activities most associated with happiness are sex, socializing after work and having dinner with others. The daily activity most injurious to happiness is commuting. According to one study, joining a group that meets even just once a month produces the same happiness gain as doubling your income. According to another, being married produces a psychic gain equivalent to more than $100,000 a year.”
Losing It, what I lost when I lost my job. Dominique Browning was the editor of House & Garden, & this piece follows what happened when the magazine folded.
Rap graphs. I laughed so hard at this that I actually snorted. & was glad no one else was around to witness it.
Insecurity doesn’t pay the bills. Oh holler!
Alien vs. Pooh?
Honestly. Some people…
P & P is my new favourite fashion blog! Aahahaha. YES it is the best parody EVER!
One Scientist’s Prescription: Grow Your Own Drugs from NPR. “James Wong thinks you should grow your own drugs. No, we’re not talking about the illicit kind. We’re talking about a living pharmacy of plants from your own backyard: fennel and rose hips; echinacea and dandelion; horse chestnuts and nettles.”
Soda: A Sin We Sip Instead of Smoke? Oh dear.
“Sugared beverages are the No. 1 source of calories in the American diet, representing 7 percent of the average person’s caloric intake, according to government surveys, and up to 10 percent for children and teenagers. These calories, they point out, are worse than useless — they’re empty, and contribute to a daily total that is already too high.”
I mentioned Jamie Oliver yesterday. I LOVE HIM. He won the TED prize this year, which is a really big deal, & 100% deserved. This is his acceptance speech, & it drives home how important the work he does really is. Please watch this.
You can offer your help — & they need lots of it — here.
Midtown Girl interviewed Tina from Violetville Vintage. I love Tina! The interview is really cute too.
Theme Friday: Dogs in the bed. Aw! Jonathan Levitt’s photo is pretty much my life.
TED Talks: Daniel Kahneman: The riddle of experience vs. memory. “Using examples from vacations to colonoscopies, Nobel laureate and founder of behavioral economics Daniel Kahneman reveals how our “experiencing selves” and our “remembering selves” perceive happiness differently. This new insight has profound implications for economics, public policy — and our own self-awareness.”
Love Your Vagina! Yay!
The New Yorker wrote about Polyvore, calling it “the world of virtual Anna Wintours”. Totally fascinating! We all know how much I love Polyvore…
Curves Ahead is a Tumblr collection of body-positive loveliness.
@url_elf reminded me that it is Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday! Read The Little Mermaid in honour!
Sign up for the Tell Your Story class here! It’s a six week online journal class & it costs $60. Looks like so much fun!
This story about Gunn High School in Palo Alto, CA vs Westboro Baptist Church is truly inspiring. It shows that the most powerful way to respond to expressions of hatred is through expressions of love. If it is hard to summon love when surrounded by rage, hatred, and even threats of violence, consider this insight by James Baldwin: “I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.”
Ever wondered what it would be like if your dog could talk? Now you know! Thanks Adrienne!
Ahhhhh! Yes! Now you can search Flickr by colour! How fantastic. I have been saying this for years! Thank you so much @whitneymae!
The Tao of Pink. YUM!
Neil (my much-neglected friend in Toronto) sent me Aw, What The Hell, Here’s The Micro-Walkman We’ve Been Developing For 20 Years, Starbucks Listens to Customer Request for More Sizes (check the date on the post, wink wink) & 1000 Awesome Things #536 When you’re being chased by zombies and suddenly find a hidden stash of guns and ammo.
Is your logo design phallic? Aahahah. Oh my god.
Have a look at Small thoughts for a big world & The Century Project (though that second one is NSFW — that means Not Safe For Work by the way!).
The Cherry Closet has a lot of really lovely vintage clothing.
Danielle Meder makes amazing paper dolls. Also, she is super-sweet.
Seven Fashion Icons That Everyone Should Know from College Fashion. Agreed!
I’M HERE is a robot love story by Spike Jonze. I haven’t seen the whole thing but the trailer is beautiful, I’m sure it is brilliant.
Feel Good: Fashion Activism is British Style Bloggers’ e-book about body image.
Drummbellina is a nonpareil who makes super-cute tote bags (“made from fabrics collected on my thrifting adventures”). I like them so much! Especially this, this & this! Way adorable!
Zoetica (old married lady, CONGRATULATIONS! Love you!) is having a small & tiny paintings sale! Go!
If you’re in New York City, you should go see The Pomology of Sweetness & Light. (It comes recommended by Angeliska, who has impeccable taste!)
Finally, Alexandra sent me this.
Do you think that anybody can damage your soul?
Then why are you so embarrassed?
I laugh at those who think they can damage me.
They do not know who I am,
they do not know what I think,
they cannot even touch the things which are really mine
and with which I live.
— Epictetus
Have THE BEST weekend!
Love & love & love,
Thanks, Gala! Lots of great stuff this week. After the week I had, I needed a little cheering up.
how weird, i’ve just decided to do an art piece around the ganzfeld procedure! & i just discovered p et p last night – SO funny.
Rap graphs are just brilliant. Never cease to make me laugh.
Gorgeous yummy brilliant post, love it.
Thankyou thankyou thankyou!
I just love them great colours.
Marriage – the final frontier! Now who around here is going to clean my dentures and deliver this colonic? Show of hands, people!
Zoetica — You & Ales are going to be the most stylish couple at the earlybird special, for sure. xoxoxoxox
Great links! Working is so overratted- really, really glad it’s Easter break!
Also, I’m dying my hair blue and it made me think of you. ;)
OMG the pastel ladies picture is SO GOOD. I gasped when I saw it!!
So by very intensely typing and squinting at the screen, my boss remains oblivious, and I remain happy….ha!
Thanks for all the goodies, this will keep me busy and may make me forget that I had to come to work today :)
And how fabs are those JC models…so fabs!!
I watched I’m Here last weekend and it’s absolutely beautiful.
If you have a spare half hour you need to watch it.
As always, your carousel is teeming with positivity and liveliness that threatens the monotonous hold of the ordinary over our lives ♥♥♥
The Ganzfeld procedure sounds fascinating – sounds like something new and interesting to do with friends on a rainy day.
I love the ‘Show Up Early’ article because it is completely TRUE but no one wants to cop to it (including me). Personal responsibility is a MUST, even when it’s ‘not really’ your fault. Before we’re so quick to excuse ourselves, we should ask, ‘did I do everything I could?’
Also related to Hans Christian Andersen’s 205th birthday: Thumbelina Google headers and International Children’s Book Day!
(yes I am @url_elf, thanks for the mention!)
Just wondering how you can promote “body positive” and jaime oliver’s food revolution at the same time? cause from what i can see it has less to do with eating healthy and more to do with jaime coming to america, crying about fat people and telling mothers they are killing their children. i’m all for eating healthy, but i wish it could happen without villification of fat people. perhaps you should read this article:
shakespearessister.blogspot.co…
Thank you for the awesome links as usual. I am sharing one with you that you might like www.sfgate.com/cgi
“Girldrive: Criss-Crossing America, Redefining Feminism.” looks like an interesting read.
My photo is one of the many on the cover of Feel Good: Fashion Activism! How exciting :)
I don’t know if you linked the New Yorker article on Polyvore because you read my tweet to you, or because you had already read it, but thinking of you following my suggestion cheered up my day!! xoxo
I always love the carousel, but today, I particularly adore the Juicy ad at the top. Those little old ladies are FIERCE. I love it. I want more people to celebrate the badass-ness of old women. Lets all make plans to be awesome old ladies together one day. When I am old, old will not be an insult.
This is nothing but goodness here!! I’m gonna have to spam folks with links now as well….once I can get away from flickr, that is. That color search is gonna be the end of me!
I can’t help but agree with Leah… those two links, plus the “30 habits that will change your life” are very contradictory. Don’t eat between meals because it makes you gain weight? What? Eating more often actually speeds up the metabolism and is healthier than eating less. But perhaps my history with an E.D is skewing my perspective on these things and making it anything but inspiring, more like confusing and depressing.
Anyway enough Negative Nancy. Minus that one problem, great list as always!
Awesome links as always, Gala. :)
I especially liked the Jamie Oliver one. I never thought of obesity as an issue for activism before, but I’m feeling so inspired by his speech that I just signed the petition & am planning to look learn some of the recipes on the website & pass them along if I like them.
Got a kick out of alien vs pooh – some people indeed! LOL
I always love these posts! One thing that could MASSIVELY improve them would be if the links opened up a new window! I get lost on one of the links for a bit, end up closing it when I’m done, and then having to reload the page all over again! Especially if I don’t have time to read everything from the links, but want to check out more things you’ve posted, it gets a little messy! Maybe you could try looking into how to do this for the next carousel post?
awesome links, as always!
Woah! Big one this week, the 30 habits one is really good, the only things I really follow strictly in my life and have for some time are waiting 48 hours before making a big purchase and not drinking alcohol anymore.
Bahahahahaha phallic!
The Starbucks cup is a joke, right?...right?...right?! That thing is massive!
Lynz – which browser do you use? Right-click a link and open in a new tab. I use firefox, but I believe it works in safari and IE as well. Though it is a good suggestion. I just happen to open everything in a new tab no matter the website.
Also.. I’m curious to see where the food revolution goes. Parents really should be concerned with what their kids are and aren’t eating. Children need to be educated and involved in the decision making of healthy choices. Why is that bad? Obviously a lot of the unhealthy food and habits of these children are leading to their obesity. Even children of “healthy” weight eat garbage. It needs to change.
Part of LOVING your body is treating it well through a good diet and exercise. That goes for everyone of every size and age.
Hey Gala, I ALWAYS bookmark all ur pages so that when I’m busy (I’m always busy lol) I can take 2 seconds & grab my fashion fix! Brilliant as always! The paper dolls are to die for (funny tho I don’t remember mine ever looking this amazing!), & the vintage clothing was omg gorgeous!! I LOVE the lips! Wish I could make this pic my wallpaper! So amazing! Brilliant my luv, simply brilliant!
Im sooo happy you posted the gunn highschool video!
my town is neighbors with palo alto and im so glad even YOU are seeing whats going on over here :)
Sorry to burst your bubble, but that colour searcher for Flickr has been out for a while! At least 6 months, maybe a year. Glad you found it though.
Boys that look like famous celebrities, cats that loves cuddling, Greek food, late night binges of amazing food, matinee movies, synthetic cheese, having more time to study tests, cereal with strawberries and banana
I loved reading ‘Losing It’ – so touching & beautiful! As a currently unemployed person, it reminded me to use this time well & to “nourish my soul”.
Thank you!
x
Perhaps you should read this before you start loving on Jamie Oliver too much
contexts.org/socimages/2010/04…
I dunno, on second thought it looks like a majority of people are saying that Jamie Oliver isn’t fat-bashing at all and not even really mentioning the words “obese” or “weight” or “calories”, more like showing people that fresh food can taste good, if not better, than processed. Of course I’m not exactly in the right frame of mind right now to see if that’s true or not so I’m just taking their word for it. =)
I apologize for the double-post.. er.. comment, but I also ran across this: gottagetgoing.blogspot.com/201…
Hm. I don’t mean to start up any arguments or create negativity at all, I just question whether or not this guy is truly inspiring or if he’s going to cause more problems without really meaning to.. last thing any of us need is to be afraid of food of any sort.. S’all I’m gonna say about that.
Hi Galla! I really love your blog and how sensitive you can be! I’M from Brazil and I always love blog that tell us the short meaning of life! Kisses… Michelle ;-)
The TED Talks are always inspiring, innovative, and fascinating. Love them! ^_^v
Alien vs Pooh was craaaazy~ O_o
The “Insecurity doesn’t pay the bills” article was sincere and genuinely true. Plus I appreciated Dominique Browning’s article as well. Oh but perhaps the best thing in this entire week’s carousel is the Juicy Couture photo in this post, a true demonstration of enjoying “the golden years”. Makes me hopeful for the future cause when I grow old, I hope to rock it like they do and look just as fierce!
Lauren you will find in that article it says
“Avoid snacking between meals. Snacking between meals is the best way to gain weight. If you are hungry, eat something concrete. Otherwise don’t. for clarification, I mean don’t eat junk food between meals, but eating real food it’s ok.
its just saying dont snack on empty calories, it doesnt mean dont eat the essential fruit and veges and calcium you require to speed your metabolism. just dont eat cakes and chocolate and that extra sandwhich in between meals. they add up.
not that this is a weight loss blog but theres no contradictory between that article and the concern for over weight people in america.
xx
I’d like to read up on the research that has so precisely determined that meeting with friends = feeling like your income has doubled. In what universe can the two types of happiness be compared? True, if I have lots of money I feel happy. If I have all my friends with me I feel happy, too. But that does not bring the two in an analogous relationship. Certainly the definition of wealth can be used metaphorically in the application of friendship. I have friends that make me feel wealthy. Yet this is suggesting that emotional fulfillment derived from social activities can be replaced by financial advantages. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the aim of this article is to show that you don’t need money to be happy, all you need are sex and friends. But this is gravely undermined by the analogy of financial gains. I love shopping and I love my friends. My best friends are the ones that I can shop with, but screw me if I can place a price on friends. You can “value” a friend but what you should really do is “love” one. Get the verbs right.
I saw Jamie’s speech the night he gave it, it was one of the most fantastic things ever to watch!
AAAAAAH the top image is righteous! I wanna be the purple-haired lady. Right this instant.
Not totally sold on the Susie Bubble legwarmers, I’m afraid. Cool concept, but I have issues with knitwear. My lil’ sister would go nuts for them, though.
Happy secular humanist Easter, y’all! I’ll be celebrating by visiting a Buddhist Temple … and then swimming in a sacred waterfall pool. And then drinking a pina colada. Yes, really.
Yes! I gave up soda 7 years ago and never looked back. Not only did I immediately start feeling better (I was lucky enough to avoid the caffeine-withdrawl headaches) but my weight stayed more balanced. It is the easiest and one of most helpful things to cut out of your life.
Though I’m only reading this now, I found myself with a strange yearning to ‘find some cool paper dolls on the internet’ this weekend. And here they are! It must be fate.
When I’m an old lady I want to have cotton candy hair!
