Lot Description

A SEVRES PORCELAIN DESSERT-SERVICE
1784-86, INTERLACED L'S ENCLOSING DATE LETTERS GG, HH & II, VARIOUS PAINTER'S, GILDER'S AND INCISED MARKS
Painted with pink roses, cornflowers, pansies and other flowers within oval cartouches alternating with cartouches of flowers in landscapes, within pale lilac-blue bands gilt with dot-pattern and continuous bands of scrolling pink roses and cornflowers, comprising:
Two monteiths (seaux crènelès)
Four bottle-coolers (seaux à bouteille)
Two smaller bottle-coolers (seaux à liquer ronds)
An ice cream cooler and two covers (seaux à glace)
Two oval sugar-bowls, covers and fixed stands (sucriers de M. le Premier), one cover a Spode replacement
Four trefoil-shaped trays each with three pot à jus (plateaux à 3 pots)
Three cushion-shaped dishes (compotiers carrés)
Four saucer-dishes (compotiers ronds)
Forty-five plates (assiettes unies)
One English porcelain plate ensuite
some minor damages and restoration

Provenance

Acquired by George John, 2nd Earl Spencer (1758-1834) through the banquier J.F. Perregaux on 12 April 1786 for either Spencer House, London, or Althorp, Northamptonshire, and thence by descent.

Lot Notes

Shortly before the death of John Poyntz, 5th Earl Spencer (1835-1910), in 1909 the service was recorded in the Raphael or China Room at Althorp. The service was initially supplied to Jean-Frédéric Perregaux, a Swiss-born banquier in Paris, who was acting as an intermediary in the purchase of the service by George John, 2nd Earl Spencer of Althorp, Lord of the Treasury and later First Lord of the Admiralty. The Earl was married to Lavinia, Countess Spencer, a friend of Marie-Antoinette, Queen of France.

The service was formulated from stock items produced during 1785 and 1786, from which two other services were assembled; the much larger service given as a diplomatic gift to Prince Albert of Saxony, Duke of Teschen, and the very small service given to Madame de Peire. The three services are discussed by Peters, ibid..

The Althorp service, described in the Sèvres archives as supplied to M Perregaux Banquier Pour Milord Spencer was decorated by a number of painters and gilders, including:
François-Marie Barrat oncle, a painter of flowers and patterns at Sèvres from 1769 to 1791 and from 1795 to 1796
Genévieve-Louise Bouillat (née Thévenet), painter of flowers at Sèvres from from 1776 to 1798
Cyprien-Julien Hirel de Choisy, a painter of flowers and patterns at Sèvres from 1770 to 1812
Antoine-Toussaint Cornailles, a flower painter and a gilder at Vincennes and Sèvres from 1755 to 1800
Étienne-Gabriel Girard, a gilder and painter of flowers at Sèvres from 1762 to 1800
Jacques-François-Louis de Laroche, a painter of flowers, ground colours and patterns at Sèvres from 1758 to 1802
Michel-Josse Le Riche fils, a painter of flowers, patterns, landscapes, birds and trophies at Sèvres from 1782 to 1789
Pierre Massy, a painter of flowers and birds at Sèvres from 1779 to 1802
Jacques-François Micaud père, a painter of flowers and patterns at Sèvres from 1757 to 1810
