Hormonal Milk and Meat: A Dangerous Public Health Risk

What's Your Reaction:

As reported in a March 18, New York Times editorial, "Honest Food Labels," FDA Commissioner, Margaret Hamburg, M.D., publicized letters to 17 food companies accusing them of -- "masking undesirable ingredients" -- in their products. She also emphasized the importance of "providing nutrition information that consumers can rely on." Unfortunately, she has failed to take any such action with regard to the two major dietary staples, milk and meat.

About 20 percent of our milk is genetically engineered, technically known as rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone), which contains high levels of a natural growth factor known as IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor one). This survives digestion and is readily absorbed from the small intestine into the blood. Increased levels of IGF-1 have been shown to increase risks of breast cancer in 19 scientific publications, risks of colon cancer in 10 publications, and prostate cancer in seven publications. Of further concern, increased IGF-1 levels block natural defense mechanisms against early microscopic cancers, known as apoptosis.

It should further be noted the scientific evidence for the dangers of rBGH milk is dealt with in detail in my 2006 book, What's In Your Milk? supported by approximately 200 scientific references. Endorsers of the book include Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and Quentin D. Young, Chairman of the Health and Medicine Policy Research Group and Public Health Advocate, State of Illinois.

Based on these concerns, on June 3, 1999, the United Nations Food Safety Agency, representing 101 nations worldwide, ruled unanimously not to endorse or set safety standards for rBGH milk. Effectively, this has resulted in an international ban on US milk.

Also based on these concerns, the Cancer Prevention Coalition, endorsed by five leading national experts, petitioned the FDA in May 2007 to label rBGH milk with an explicit cancer warnings. In the absence of any response, we resubmitted this petition in January 2010 to Dr. Hamburg, and are waiting for a response.

US cattle are implanted with natural or synthetic sex hormones prior to entering feed lots 100 days prior to slaughter in order to increase their meat yield. Not surprisingly, our meat is contaminated with high levels of sex hormones. Based on these concerns, and as warned by the Cancer Prevention Coalition and five leading national experts, our meat poses increased risks of hormonal cancers, which have escalated since 1975: breast by 23 percent, prostate by 60 percent, and testis by 60 percent. Not surprisingly, US meat is banned worldwide.

Furthermore, as clearly evidenced in a series of General Accounting Office investigations and Congressional hearings, the FDA, besides the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), have failed to take any regulatory action to protect the public from the dangers of hormonal meat. A 1986 report, "Human Food Safety and Regulation of Animal Drugs," unanimously approved by the House Committee on Government Operations, concluded that the "FDA has consistently disregarded its responsibility -- has repeatedly put what it perceives are interests of veterinarians and the livestock industry ahead of its legal obligation to protect consumers -- jeopardizing the health and safety of consumers meat, milk, and poultry."

In response to questions on the dangers of hormonal meat raised by the European Commission in February 1996, the USDA responded with unsubstantiated claims that less than 0.25 percent of animals tested annually proved positive for "residue violations." In fact, meat has not been and is still not monitored for sex hormone levels by the USDA or FDA.

Together with other leading scientific experts, on January 29, 2010, the Cancer Prevention Coalition submitted a Citizens Petition to the FDA on the "Imminent health Hazard" from hormonal meat, supported by 59 scientific references. We are waiting for a response.

Not surprisingly, U.S. milk and meat are banned in some leading countries.

Soy and grain is not normal bovine feed. If soy can affect human hormones, what does it do to a cow? Buy free range, locally produced meat and dairy.

Oh my goodness. Milk & meat come in plastic containers. So the public is getting hit with a double whammy. Even the non-hormonal milk sold in the stores come in plastic jugs and I've noticed grain fed meat with plastic wrapping. Almost everything at Trader Joes & Whole Foods come in plastic so no the one is immune if you purchase food products from traditional stores. If the food chain is cleaned up (if that's possible) there still is the endocrine system disruptors from the packaging.
Danchi   03:52 PM on 4/14/2010
This isn't a meat eater vs vegan-vegeterian issue. The issue is chemicals that are hormone disruptors that affect the endocrine system in humans. Here's why:

BPA is one of many man-made chemicals classified as endocrine disruptors, which alter the function of the endocrine system by mimicking the role of the body's natural hormones. Hormones are secreted through endocrine glands and serve different functions throughout the body.

The chemical--which is widely used in products such as reusable water bottles, food can linings, water pipes and dental sealants--has been shown to affect reproduction and brain development in animal studies.

"There is a large body of scientific evidence demonstrating the harmful effects of very small amounts of BPA in laboratory and animal studies, but little clinical evidence related to humans," explains Belcher. "There is a very strong suspicion in the scientific community, however, that this chemical has harmful effects on humans." ScienceDaily (Feb. 4, 2008)

The chemical is widely used in plastic water and baby bottles, food packaging, compact discs, and other consumer products; plastics made with BPA usually have the number 7 on the bottom. BPA has shown effects on breast and prostate tissue, as well as on how early puberty occurs.

Hormones have been in the milk & meat for over 3 decades from what I've read. We can avoid it. We need to move beyond the meat eater vs non-meat eater opposition because there is a far more insidious agent in play now. Plastic.

A dangerous public health risk and their continuation, a monumental scandal of shame.

The latest Supreme Court decision has insured that our conversion to a Corpocracy is complete. We have been under the control of corporate greed and total disregard for human life for the last few decades. When chemical companies Monsanto and Dow took over our agricultural sector they began churning out poison GMO food with the blessing of the USDA, when big Pharma reached it's zenith they began churning out killer drugs knowing that they are dangerous but made enough in sales to turn a profit before too many people died and they were pulled from th market, and when factory farms replaced family farms the circle was complete. We now have the fattest, sickest and poorest Citizens in the developed world. The obesity epidemic is not from lifestyle alone. The cancer and adhd and all of the other rampant diseases are a direct result of our diet of unnatural and adulterated food. I can't see how we could have survived as a species with the many ailments most Americans are afflicted with. Everyone reading this post are on or knows someone who is on lifelong drugs. Diabetes supplies businesses are cropping up as fast as bariactric companies. I saw a movie when I lived in Canada called "The genetic takeover" and if you can find it watch it.

Damn it all...I got a strange triple negative (no family history) cancer....and..I can't help but think of the bologna sandwiches and whole milk I was raised on....The China Study really brought it home...too late for me however..

I too had a triple negative breast cancer with no history on either side of my family. I also have high blood pressure, pre diabetic and evertime i see a doctor they want to give me more pills. There is a definate connection between our food all of which is now GMO. Unlike the UK, where producers are required to label their food if it is GMO and/or irradiated, the corporate farmers successfully squelched such a requirement here in the early eighties. Food that doesn't decompose? Bread that even the lowly mold cannot digest? Food products which contain 10,20 unpronounceble ingredients? It's no wonder we are all sick. I now eat organic but the corporate masters have co-opted the definition. I even feed my cats and dog ,food which does not contain "animal by-products".

If you "knew" for sure that all the additives to foods were potential killers you would stop buying them. Look around the next time you are at an elementary school. Take note of the number of developing eight and nine year old girls. Consider the hormone laced milk, dairy products and meat they eat. Is there a connection? We can't control what's in the air we breath (although we can try to change that too), but we can control what we eat. Smaller portions of (yes) more expensive meat and dairy products, more pesticide free produce could be just the ticket!

Vegan organic. It's not hard. It's not expensive. It's the best way to vote with our dollars and support local farmers!

and a good way to look sickely all the time. Why can't u just suggest organic instead of jumping to the farthest end of the deep end by suggesting veganism? Veganism is a huge undertaking and honestly it shouldn't be suggest with such ease to any one.

Sorry to dissapoint you but I don't look sickly at all. I look like a lean, mean fighting machine!

Veganism is not a huge undertaking at all. I was raised in a lower middle class family and "meat and potatoes" was all I knew. After eliminating animal products four years ago I felt 100 percent healthier - with incredible energy - after about a week. Feeling stronger, sleeping better, a calmer mind -- all of these things have made me never look back.

I find that eating a vegan diet is in no way restrictive and is not any more difficult than one that includes animal products.
janicestanger   12:11 AM on 4/14/2010
A whole foods, plant-based diet is the eating plan humans were meant to thrive on. Eat a variety of fruits, veggies, beans, whole grains, potatoes, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices. Note that ALL dairy products are high in estrogen. This is because cows on dairy farms are kept constantly pregnant. Also note ALL animal protein raises IGF-1 levels. This is especially true of dairy proteins. Do not be fooled by the multi-billion dollar might of the meat and dairy industries. It makes very little difference in terms of your health (or the planet's health) if the animal was fed additional hormones in its feed. The harm is done either way. http://perfectformuladiet.com/plant-based-nutrition/science-based-nutrition-and-health

We get what we tolerate as the product-buying public. "Vote with your wallet" is a great way to overcome BigPharma's and BigFarm's seemingly endless ability to buy off the FDA . We need to become educated and discerning in our purchasing decisions. We can revolt with our wallets. Its not like cows can revolt and become organic. Or can they? http://organicconnectmag.com/wp/2009/12/cows-unite-for-organic-dairy/

I think that's great -- "voting with your wallet." I noticed recently that Costco which carries a mountain of processed, sugar, grease and salt-infested food is starting to offer more and more organic stuff. That's because I think people want it.... As a vegan, I wish the meat department would shut down because weren't buying it. Maybe with more articles like this, it'll start to happen.

Here's what's intereresting: Farmers are NOT allowed to say that RGHB is bad for you and they HAVE TO label their milk that says "there is no difference between hormoned and antibioticed milk and organic milk"..... THIS is how the FDA looks out for the consumers' best interests.... It makes farmers that care put false statements on their milk.

Haven't drank regular milk since the 80's....it's just plain gross. Try to eat organic meat....but too expensive.... so I stick with organic vegetables and get as much meat as I can from the farmers when I go to Vermont. Grass fed beef and milk fed veal is everywhere up there.

One has to wonder how the government can consider milk and meat safe for Americans if it's banned for export.

In the meantime they have only our safety in mind when they ban us from buying discount prescriptions from other countries.

They have only our health and safety in mind. Really.

I had uterine fibroids and surgery -lost 6 weeks of work and ended up with complications like adhesions... when they grew back I was wiser and switched to organic milk, eggs and meats -they shrunk considerably! My own personal results... every time I slip up they grow. That is good enough for me! When my husband asked why I was spending so much on these foods, I asked if her really wanted estrogen in his food... 'nuff said, he walked away shocked.

It is a travesty that business controls the food supply, scientists study the effects on human beings, and pharmaceutical companies develop and sell drugs to treat those effects.

It is plain to be seen what is the matter.

I would like to hear the author's views on this.

And once again no mention of the dangers of pasteurized and homogenized milk. Processed dairy is very bad for the body. No, it does not do a body good!

Bring back RAW dairy, as God intended. Get the fake milk off the market and allow people to buy and drink the wonderfully healing raw milk.

http://www.notmilk.com - for all the reasons why processed dairy is bad, bad, bad.

God didn't intend mammals to drink the milk of another species. God didn't intend mammals to drink milk after they've been weaned off it. Pasteurized or raw: the stuff is poison. Want "milk?" Then try soy or various nut milks. They're far healthier and FAR less environmentally destructive.

Conk   11:11 AM on 4/16/2010
Soy? Soy? Really? Don't read much do you? Soy is a vile "food". Soy milk is purtrid, worthless garbage. Watch a video on how it's made. You'll puke in your cheerios.
DebbyM   07:20 PM on 4/13/2010
You're not really serious are you "Bring back RAW dairy, as God intended"? God intended baby calves to drink milk, not you. And by the way, go to the link you attached to your comment and read about raw milk and the soup of bacteria it contains.
photo
Conk   11:10 AM on 4/16/2010
Foolish one. That soup of bacteria are healthy! Your intestines need that bacteria. If you did not have it (and most don't have nearly enough) you'd be dead.

I was not debating where mammals drink other mammals milk, I was educating you on the dangers of processed dairy. And just how do you know what nature intended?

There is a mountain of unbiased evidence that raw dairy HEALS the body. Stay sickly, I really don't care.

Raw milk, yummy. Pay no attention to the naysayers. I was raised on the stuff and never got sick.

Interestingly, in a related article about whether parents should be prosecuted for child abuse if their children are obese, many of the posters there believe we all have total control over our diets. Unfortunately, the real problem is our lack of control. We're at the mercy of the agriculture industry, and until better research and regulation (and enforcement) are enacted, it's going to be harder and harder for any of us to stay healthy. For those of us lucky enough to have the resources to buy better foods, our chances are better, but not assured. The old Italian proverb is very true to either pay the farmer or pay the doctor - however, they weren't talking about factory farms where nothing that comes out of them is wholesome or nourishing!
