AN UNSUSUAL PAIR OF SOAPSTONE INLAID LACQUER BOTTLE VASES
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
Each with the bulbous body and long narrow neck lavishly embellished with finely carved multi-coloured soapstone to depict stylised archaistic taotie masks between a band of lotus lappets at the base and alternating shou and bats below a pendant ruyi border at the shoulder, all on a ground of carved cinnabar lacquer wan characters, the neck flanked by loose ring handles and surmounted by a gilt bronze mount with a square aperture
