THE PROPERTY OF AN IMPORTANT AMERICAN PRIVATE COLLECTOR
Previously sold at Sotheby's Paris, 18 December 2008, lot 126
The 18th century was a period of experimentation in which the Qianlong Emperor in particular, was very keen to combine or simulate different materials. While the present bowl is extremely rare and no other known examples of jade bowls with further lacquer decoration appear to have been published, a number of other examples of similar experimentation are known. Cf. a Jiaqing-marked famille rose porcelain vase with a carved lacquer neck included in the present sale, lot 1910.
Plain spinach-green jade bowls of the same form with Qianlong sealmarks are widely published, for example see a spinach-green jade bowl with from the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo Yuqi Quanji, pl. 49-50.
