Lot Description

A VERY RARE RUBY GROUND FAMILLE ROSE CUP STAND AND A CUP
QIANLONG FOUR-CHARACTER SEALMARKS AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)

The shallow rounded sides rising to an everted rim, surrounding the flattened cavetto and raised central cup holder, all raised on four ruyi form feet, finely enamelled in subtle tones of blue, yellow, green, iron-red and grisaille with four circular mountainous landscape panels depicting the four seasons interspersed by formal lotus blooms borne on leafy tendrils against a graviata incised ruby-red feathery scroll ground, the rim and reverse with further bands of lotus blooms and tendrils; the wine cup similarly decorated with stylised lotus sprays above a yellow-ground lappet border, the interior gilt
The cup stand 6 3/8 (16.3 cm.); the cup 2 5/8 (6.5 cm.) wide

Lot Notes

The application of the graviata technique creating scrolling, leiwen and lattice patterns on enamels covering the background of porcelain vessels reached its peak of refinement on imperial porcelains of the Qianlong reign, when the current cup stand and cup were made.

Compare the cupstand with a nearly identical example with slight differences in the composition of the landscape roundels and alternating purple and yellow lotus blooms rather than the yellow blooms seen on the present example in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, included in the exhibition Stunning Decorative Porcelains from the Ch'ien-lung Reign, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2008 and illustrated in the Catalogue, pp.62-63, no. 10 (fig. 1) where it is recorded that only two orders of this pattern were commissioned in the 7th year of the Qianlong reign.

Other examples of ruby and yellow graviata ground cups and stands in the National Palace Museum are published ibid, nos. 7, 8 and 9. Compare also a fine graviata ruby-ground covered waterpot sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 May 2006, lot 1227.
