Lot Notes

Very few vases of this exceptionally large proportion survive in collections. A comparable example of this same size from the collection of the Rt. Hon. The Lord Margadale of Islay, removed from Fonthill House, Wiltshire, was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 16 May 1977, lot 216. The Fonthill vase is also decorated in a similar style to depict a single phoenix proudly standing on rockwork.

The particularly large size and auspicious imagery enamelled on the present vase, all points towards this being a special commission and possibly a wedding gift. The pair of phoenix in flight, fenghuang yufei, is symbolic of a harmonious marriage: shuangfeng heming; while the pair of mandarin ducks grants wishes for a happy marriage and progeny of 'distinguished sons'. Finally the two magpies, xique, symbolize another wedding motif, shuangxi, 'double-happiness', with the character of the word for magpie, xi, being the same as the character for happiness.
