Lot Description

A VERY RARE FAMILLE VERTE INSCRIBED BRUSHPOT, BITONG
KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)

Finely and naturalistically painted on one side with a bird perched on bamboo, a bamboo shoot, a blossoming and budding chrysanthemum, and a poinsetta, the reverse decorated in black enamel with a ten-character inscription followed by two square seals, Si and Yuan, in iron-red
6 1/4 in. (15.8 cm.) high, box

Lot Notes

There appears to be a small group of ceramics that are also boldly inscribed with running script using black enamel from the Qing Court collection, illustrated in Porcelains in Polychrome and Contrasting Colours, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Commercial Press, 1999, p. 92, no. 84, a teapot (fig. 1); and two brushpots, pp. 98-99, nos. 90 and 91. All of these vessels, as with the present example, bear a two-character sealmarks in red enamel: Si and Yuan, placed at the end of the calligraphy which when read together means 'The West Garden'. Of all the brushpots, the varied poetic verses are in five-character stanza. The couplet on the present brushpot maybe translated as:

Alone with the snow as (my) companion;
Other than oneself, no one knows (my) inner desires.

In accordance with the Beijing Palace Museum catalogue entry, loc. cit, p. 99, the characters 'Si Yuan' identify the calligraphy of the famous artist, Gao Fenghan (1683-1749). Gao Fenghan's name is listed in Zhongguo Meishu Jiarenming Cidian, Shanghai Renmin Chubanshe, 1985, p. 787.
