Lot Description

A VERY RARE EARLY MING ANHUA-DECORATED TIANBAI-GLAZED DISH
YONGLE PERIOD (1403-1425)

Delicately potted with wide rounded sides and a gently flared rim, finely decorated in anhua around the cavetto with two dragons, divided by ruyi-form clouds, the centre evenly spaced with three clusters of cloud-scrolls, applied overall with an unctuous white glaze 7 1/2 in. (19 cm.) diam., box

Lot Notes

Very few thinly potted 15th century white dishes, known as tianbai or 'sweet white' glaze, with anhua decoration have survived. Among this rare group of dishes, there appear to be have been slightly differing types of anhua designs. The first group is decorated with a pair of striding dragons chasing each other on the cavetto and three ruyi clouds on the interior, as with the present example and the dish of this same size sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 17 May 1988, lot 38. The second group, incised with five dragons on the cavetto and a four-character reign mark on the exterior; such as dish formerly from the collection of Mrs Yale Kneeland, first sold at Sotheby's 2 November 1994, and sold again at Christie's Hong Kong, 31 October 2000, lot 859. The third, is decorated with a pair of phoenix in anhua; an example of this is the dish from the collections of C.T. Loo, and Dr and Mrs Wilmont Gordon sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 7 July (catalogue dated 28 April) 2003, lot 646.
