Paul Anka

This is by far the best single-disc greatest hits album of Paul Anka since it contains all of the major essentials duing his singing career. However, it is not a COMPLETE hit collection, but it's the closest thing you will find. The next logical step, unless Rhino already started, is a four or five CD box set covering all the hits, some rarities, some b-sides, some live recordings, and some unreleased material. Anka deserves box set treatment. The very least Rhino should do is make a collection of his ORIGINAL ABC-Paramount years of music (1957-1961) which is hard to find on CD.

1. Diana
2. You Are My Destiny
3. Crazy Love
4. Let The Bells Keep Ringing
5. The Teen Commandments
6. (All Of A Sudden) My Heart Sings
7. Lonely Boy
8. Put Your Head On My Shoulder
9. It's Time To Cry
10. Puppy Love
11. My Home Town
12. Summer's Gone
13. Tonight My Love, Tonight
14. Dance On Little Girl
15. Love Me Warm And Tender
16. Eso Beso (That Kiss!)
17. Goodnight My Love
18. Jubilation
19. (You're) Having My Baby
20. One Man Woman/One Woman Man

The Beatle

This red album is a great collection of their early 1962-66 hits, and obviously goes perfect with the blue collection of later 1967-70 hits. These are the sets to get if the "1" disc isn't enough for you, the casual fan. My single complaint is that each disc here is only 31 minutes short, but on the bright side we still get 26 hits in all, with lyrics. Unlike the blue collection, this could easily have been put on one disc, with many songs added. Still, the highlights are here from "Love Me Do" to "Yellow Submarine". Maybe one day we'll get a 27 track companion to the "1" disc.

Disc: 1
1. Love Me Do
2. Please Please Me
3. From Me to You
4. She Loves You
5. I Want to Hold Your Hand
6. All My Loving
7. Can't Buy Me Love
8. Hard Day's Night
9. And I Love Her
10. Eight Days a Week
11. I Feel Fine
12. Ticket To Ride
13. Yesterday

Disc: 2
1. Help!
2. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
3. We Can Work It Out
4. Day Tripper
5. Drive My Car
6. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
7. Nowhere Man
8. Michelle
9. In My Life
10. Girl
11. Paperback Writer
12. Eleanor Rigby
13. Yesterday

I didn't listen this song before!
So many songs in this album were so famous in 1957-1961. Such a Dianna, you are my destiny, crazy love and dance on little girl. All these are my favorites. Try, they are beautiful noises.

Abba

Reviewer: I was amazed at the excellence of some of these songs. I really enjoyed listening to this set. It's great to take a close listen to this group since some of their stuff is amazing. I find that the songs I recognized from USA radio play were a large notch better than the rest of the stuff on the CDs as a general rule. I did not enjoy CD2 near as much but maybe I need to listen several more times.

Somebody amongst the three songwriters is an excellent poet because the lyrics on at least "The Winner Takes It all," "Fernando," and "The Day Before You Came" are great. "The Day Before You Came" (CD2) is 5 minutes and 45 seconds of unique lyrics, and interesting to try and interpret. I guess that one song is worth the price of CD2.

The "radio play" songs feature excellent drums and the bass player is good 'n' funky with great stuff.

Disc: 1
1. Dancing Queen
2. Knowing Me, Knowing You
3. Take A Chance On Me
4. Mamma Mia
5. Lay All Your Love On Me
6. Super Trouper
7. I Have A Dream
8. The Winner Takes It All
9. Money, Money, Money
10. S.O.S.
Disc: 2
1. Summer Night City
2. Angeleyes
3. The Day Before You Came
4. Eagle
5. I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do.
6. So Long
7. Honey Honey
8. The Visitors
9. Our Last Summer
10. On & On & On

The Beach Boys

Review: This is the essential album of summer. My wife and I love to play this every year we go to the beach as it puts us in the perfect mood for sun and fun! This CD has it all: great surf hits (Surfin' Safari, Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, Catch A Wave, etc.), classic girl songs (Barbara Ann, Help Me Rhonda, etc.), the greastest song of all time (Wouldn't It Be Nice - played this song at my wedding!), fun songs (Fun Fun Fun, Be True To Your School, California Girls), and even dance songs (Dance Dance Dance and Do You Wanna Dance?). Oh yeah, and I love the song "God Only Knows." And to top it all off, the album ends with the perfect "Kokomo," which I believe was once voted the greatest summertime song of all time. Beach Boys hit their harmonies perfectly and are the rare band that is timeless and can also get you to close your eyes and escape to another place. This album is truly a masterpiece and is a must have for summer!

Tears in Heaven

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
  Would you be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on,
Because I know I don''t belong here in heaven.
  Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
  Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?
I''ll find my way through night and day,
Because I know I just can''t stand here in heaven.
  Time can bring you down,
  Time can bend your knees,
  Time can break your heart.
  Have you begging please,
  Begging please.
Beyond the door there''s peace I''m sure
And I know there''ll be no more tears in heaven.
  Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
  Would you be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on,
Because I know I don''t belong here in heaven

This song was written and sung by Eric Clapton. Whenever I heard this song, it reminded me the tragic story of his son. It is a heart breaking story.

On 20 March 1991 at 11 a.m., four-and-a-half-year-old Conor Clapton died when he fell from a 53rd-story window in a New York City apartment. He landed on the roof of an adjacent four-story building.

Creedence Clearwater Revival

Recorded 1968-1970 and includes 'Susie Q', 'I Put a Spell on You', 'Proud Mary', 'Bad Moon Rising', 'Lodi', 'Green River', 'Commotion', 'Down on the Corner', 'Fortunate Son', 'Travelin' Band', 'Who'll Stop the Rain', 'Up Around the Bend', 'Run Through the Jungle', 'Lookin' Out My Back Door', 'Long as I Can See the Light', 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine', 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain?', 'Hey Tonight', 'Sweet Hitch-Hiker' & 'Someday Never Comes'. Fantasy label. 1991.
By 1970, rock 'n roll in it's purest form was on the verge of joining the endangered species list. Granted, the term had become much more inclusive by then, referring to more or less the entire spectrum of pop music, epitomized by The Beatles in the UK and The Beach Boys in the US. The grittier, less refined elements which had defined the rock music of the 50s and 60s had become less prominent, but it was not ready to fade away just yet. It still had two very popular bands as proponents. In England, that band was The Rolling Stones. In America, it was Creedence Clearwater Revival.

John Denver

This is a wonderful collection of hits from John Denver. John Denver was a great poet and songwriter as well as a great musician. These are just a sample from his library of classics.
This is a great CD to bring along on a camping trip or while sitting around a campfire with friends. If you enjoy acoustic music or enjoy the "great outdoors", this is the album for you.
John Denver (Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr.) was a very good musician. He was a one of a kind country singer, almost never singing traditional country music about death, divorce, and sadness. He always did upbeat songs. This particular CD features all of his hits on the radio and the good clear versions. He tells you in the booklet that these are treated differently than the original recordings, because he was singing better at this time of his life. Tragically, Denver died in 1997 in a plane crash at the age of 53, but his music will carry on forever. The best version of Take Me Home, Country Roads, Rocky Mountain High and Sunshine on my Shoulders are right here on this CD. If you like John Denver, this CD and his other CD Greatest Hits Volume 2 are the ones to get. You will not be disappointed with this CD at all. Rest in Peace John Denver, the mountains always made you "feel at peace."

The Beatles, this is one of my best.  I love to listen all Beatles songs. Such as Yesterday and I want to hold your hand etc.
NO other band has had the same influence in the world as the Beatles. Over eight years and more than a dozen albums, four young men from Liverpool, England - John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Star changed popular music and culture forever.
People in the UK became crazy about the Beatles in late 1963. The phenomenon was called "Beatlemania" by the British press. The term referred to the young women seen screaming at the band's concerts. Beatlemania came to North America in early 1964, and the band's popularity spread across much of the world.
Within five years, the Beatles' music changed greatly from their simple early hits like "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand".

The band wrote their own songs, explored new ways to create music and strived for high quality in every album they released.
However, with their popularity came criticism. The press criticized the band as symbols of 1960s youth culture, which celebrated freedom from traditional family roles.

In 1970, Paul McCartney announced he was leaving the Beatles. And the group quietly came to an end.
In the 70s, fans hoped for a reunion, but the group decided to follow their own careers with different degrees of success.
Fans lost hope with a tragedy; John Lennon was murdered in New York in 1980.

Eric has won the most glory for the song, but i think he prefer to use all the prize he got  to exchange back his baby's life.
I'm often moved when I listen this song. I think few people can not moved if they know the story and understand the lyrics.
Hoped sad already to fade out, only happy remembrance and endless missing leave in the world. People's pain obtain comforts and subimates but not tear sprinkled the heaven.

Beatles: First Radio Interview, 10/28/62

Beatles: First RadAccording to reknown Beatles author Mark Lewisohn, this is the Beatles' first-ever radio interview. Lewisohn accurately describes it as rare and fascinating, not just for historical importance, but also because it's wonderfully intriguing.

At the time of this 1962 interview, the Beatles are still making regular visits to Hamburg, and Ringo Starr is so new to the group that he's still keeping track of how long he's been a Beatle by the number of weeks! This interview takes place following the release of their first single 'Love Me Do,' and before the final version of 'Please Please Me' had been arrived at. At the time of this interview they have not yet had a #1 hit. It is a rare glimpse of the early Beatles, recorded on October 28th 1962 at Hulme Hall in Port Sunlight, on the Wirral in England. This new group of youngsters is interviewed by Monty Lister, with additional questions from Malcolm Threadgill and Peter Smethurst.io Interview, 10/28/62

MONTY: It's a very great pleasure for us this evening to say hello to an up-and-coming Merseyside group, The Beatles. I know their names, and I'm going to try and put faces to them. Now, you're John Lennon, aren't you?"
JOHN: "Yes, that's right."
MONTY: "What do you do in the group, John?"
JOHN: "I play harmonica, rhythm guitar, and vocal. That's what they call it."
MONTY: "Then, there's Paul McCartney. That's you?"
PAUL: "Yeah, that's me. Yeah."
MONTY: "And what do you do?"
PAUL: "Play bass guitar and uhh, sing? ...I think! That's what they say."
MONTY: "That's quite apart from being vocal?"
PAUL: "Well... yes, yes."
MONTY: "Then there's George Harrison."
GEORGE: "How d'you do."
MONTY: "How d'you do. What's your job?"
GEORGE: "Uhh, lead guitar and sort of singing."
MONTY: "By playing lead guitar does that mean that you're sort of leader of the group or are you...?"
GEORGE: "No, no. Just... Well you see, the other guitar is the rhythm. Ching, ching, ching, you see."
PAUL: "He's solo guitar, you see. John is in fact the leader of the group."
MONTY: "And over in the background, here, and also in the background of the group making alot of noise is Ringo Starr."
RINGO: "Hello."
MONTY: "You're new to the group, aren't you Ringo?"
RINGO: "Yes, umm, nine weeks now."
MONTY: "Were you in on the act when the recording was made of 'Love Me Do'?"
RINGO: "Yes, I'm on the record. I'm on the disc."
(the group giggles)
RINGO: (comic voice) "It's down on record, you know?"
MONTY: "Now, umm..."
RINGO: "I'm the drummer!"
(laughter)
MONTY: "What's that offensive weapon you've got there? Those are your drumsticks?"
RINGO: "Well, it's umm... just a pair of sticks I found. I just bought 'em, you know, 'cuz we're going away."
MONTY: "When you say you're going away, that leads us on to another question now. Where are you going?"
RINGO: "Germany. Hamburg. For two weeks."
MONTY: "You have standing and great engagements over there, haven't you?"
RINGO: "Well, the boys have been there quite alot, you know. And I've been there with other groups, but this is the first time I've been there with the Beatles."
MONTY: "Paul, tell us. How do you get in on the act in Germany?"
PAUL: "Well, it was all through an old agent."
(laughter)
PAUL: (chuckles) "We first went there for a fella who used to manage us, and Mr. Allan Williams of the Jacaranda Club in Liverpool. And he found the engagements so we sort of went there, and then went under our own..."
JOHN: "Steam."
PAUL: "Steam... (laughs)
JOHN: "...as they say."
PAUL: "As they say, afterwards, you know. And we've just been going backwards and forwards and backwards and forwards."
MONTY: (surprised) "You're not busy at all?"
PAUL: "Well yes, actually. Yes. It's been left-leg in all the war." (laughter)
作者: ozimex999    时间: 2006-9-5 11:54 AM

MONTY: "George, were you brought up in Liverpool?"
GEORGE: "Yes. So far, yes."
MONTY: "Whereabouts?"
GEORGE: "Well, born in Wavertree, and bred in Wavertree and Speke-- where the airplanes are, you know."
MONTY: "Are you all 'Liverpool types,' then?"
RINGO: "Yes."
JOHN: "Uhh... types, yes."
PAUL: "Oh yeah."
RINGO: "Liverpool-typed Paul, there."
MONTY: "Now, I'm told that you were actually in the same form as young Ron Wycherley..."
RINGO: "Ronald. Yes."
MONTY: "...now Billy Fury."
RINGO: "In Saint Sylus."
MONTY: "In which?"
RINGO: "Saint Sylus."
JOHN: "Really?"
RINGO: "It wasn't Dingle Bay like you said in the Musical Express."
PAUL: "No, that was wrong. Saint Sylus school."
MONTY: "Now I'd like to introduce a young disc jockey. His name is Malcolm Threadgill, he's 16-years old, and I'm sure he'd like to ask some questions from the teenage point of view."
MALCOLM: "I understand you've made other recordings before on a German label."
PAUL: "Yeah."
MALCOLM: "What ones were they?"
PAUL: "Well, we didn't make... First of all we made a recording with a fella called Tony Sheridan. We were working in a club called 'The Top Ten Club' in Hamburg. And we made a recording with him called, 'My Bonnie,' which got to number five in the German Hit Parade."
JOHN: "Ach tung!"
PAUL: (giggles) "But it didn't do a thing over here, you know. It wasn't a very good record, but the Germans must've liked it a bit. And we did an instrumental which was released in France on an EP of Tony Sheridan's, which George and John wrote themselves. That wasn't released here. It got one copy. That's all, you know. It didn't do anything."
MALCOLM: "You composed 'P.S. I Love You' and 'Love Me Do' yourself, didn't you? Who does the composing between you?"
PAUL: "Well, it's John and I. We write the songs between us. It's, you know... We've sort of signed contracts and things to say, that now if we..."
JOHN: "It's equal shares."
PAUL: "Yeah, equal shares and royalties and things, so that really we just both write most of the stuff. George did write this instrumental, as we say. But mainly it's John and I. We've written over about a hundred songs but we don't use half of them, you know. We just happened to sort of rearrange 'Love Me Do' and played it to the recording people, and 'P.S. I Love You,' and uhh, they seemed to quite like it. So that's what we recorded."
MALCOLM: "Is there anymore of your own compositions you intend to record?"
JOHN: "Well, we did record another song of our own when we were down there, but it wasn't finished enough. So, you know, we'll take it back next time and see how they like it then."
(long pause)
JOHN: (jokingly) "Well... that's all from MY end!"
(laughter)
MONTY: "I would like to just ask you-- and we're recording this at Hume Hall, Port Sunlight-- Did any of you come over to this side before you became famous, as it were? Do you know this district?"
PAUL: "Well, we played here, uhh... I don't know what you mean by famous, you know.
(laughter)
PAUL: "If being famous is being in the Hit Parade, we've been over here-- we were here about two months ago. Been here twice, haven't we?"
JOHN: "I've got relations here. Rock Ferry."
MONTY: "Have you?"
JOHN: "Yes. Oh, all sides of the water, you know."
PAUL: "Yeah, I've got a relation in Claughton Village-- Upton Road."
RINGO: (jokingly) "I've got a friend in Birkenhead!"
(laughter)
MONTY: "I wish I had."
GEORGE: (jokingly) "I know a man in Chester!"
(laughter)
MONTY: "Now, that's a very dangerous thing to say. There's a mental home there, mate. Peter Smethurst is here as well, and he looks like he is bursting with a question."
PETER: "There is just one question I'd like to ask. I'm sure it's the question everyone's asking. I'd like your impressions on your first appearence on television."
PAUL: "Well, strangely enough, we thought we were gonna be dead nervous. And everyone said, 'You suddenly, when you see the cameras, you realize that there are two million people watching,' because there were two million watching that 'People And Places' that we did... we heard afterwards. But, strangely enough, it didn't come to us. We didn't think at all about that. And it was much easier doing the television than it was doing the (live musical performance) radio. It's still nerve-wracking, but it was a bit easier than doing radio because there was a full audience for the radio broadcast."
MONTY: "Do you find it nerve-wracking doing this now?"
(laughter)
PAUL: (jokingly) "Yeah, yeah."
MONTY: "Over at Cleaver Hospital, a certain record on Parlophone-- the top side has been requested. So perhaps the Beatles themselves would like to tell them what it's going to be."
PAUL: "Yeah. Well, I think it's gonna be 'Love Me Do.'"
JOHN: "Parlophone R4949."
(laughter)
PAUL: "'Love Me Do.'"
MONTY: "And I'm sure, for them, the answer is P.S. I love you!" PAUL: "Yeah."

Scarborough Fair

Sarah Brihtman

http://www.xyala.com/UploadFile/2004-9/20049289470734.mp3

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?

Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme

Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt

(Oh the sides of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme

(Tracing of sparrow on the snow crested brown)
Without no seams nor needless work

(Blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain)
Then she’ll be a true love of mine

(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)
Tell her to find me on acre of land

(On the side of a hill a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme

(Washes the grave with silvery tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strand

(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
[Then she’ll be a true love of mine

Tell her to reap it with a sickle of leather

(War bellows blazing in scarlet battalion)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme

Generals order their soldiers to kill
And gather it all in a bunch of heather

(And to fight for a cause they’ve long ago forgotten)
Then she’ll be a true love of mine

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?

Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme

Remember me to one who lives there

She once was a true love of mine

That depends on every individual taste. But Sarah Brightman is my favorite.  Her voice is of great nature.

“Peter, Paul and Mary are folk singers.” So stated the liner notes to the group’s self-titled 1962 debut album. Today, this declaration seems redundant, because the term “folk music” has come to be virtually interchangeable with the group name, but when the words were written, they were meant less as a stylistic distinction than as a mission statement.
No American folk group has lasted longer or amassed a more loyal following than Peter, Paul and Mary; indeed, few groups of any genre have logged more years (43) or miles (countless) in direct, yearly touring; spreading the message and engaging the next (now four) generations. During its now legendary career, the trio won five Grammys, produced five Top 10 albums and 13 Top 40 hits, of which 6 ascended into the Top 10 - as well as six gold and three platinum albums. That PP&M achieved such a rarefied level of commercial success without compromise, and while continuing a centuries-old tradition of people raising their voices in song for the sake of freedom, is simply further evidence of their extraordinarily successful career -- as much a mission accomplished as a musical career.

Chuck Berry

Chuck Berry's music has transcended generations. He earns respect to this day because he is truly an entertainer. Berry gained success by watching the audience's reaction and playing accordingly, putting his listeners' amusement above all else. For this reason, tunes like "Johnny B. Goode," "Maybellene" and "Memphis" have become anthems to an integrated American youth and popular culture. Berry is a musical icon who established rock and roll as a musical form and brought the worlds of black and white together in song.

Born in St. Louis on October 18, 1926 Berry had many influences on his life that shaped his musical style. He emulated the smooth vocal clarity of his idol, Nat King Cole, while playing blues songs from bands like Muddy Waters. For his first stage performance, Berry chose to sing a Jay McShann song called "Confessin' the Blues." It was at his high school's student musical performance, when the blues was well-liked but not considered appropriate for such an event. He got a thunderous applause for his daring choice, and from then on, Berry had to be onstage.

Another Day In Paradise
Phil Collins

She calls out to the man on the street
Sir can you help me
It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep
Is there somewhere you can tell me
He walks on doesn't look back
He pretends he can't hear her
Starts to whistle
As he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there
Oh think twice
It's another 4 day for you and me In paradise
Oh think twice
It's just another day for you In this paradise
Just think about it
She calls out to the man on the street
He can see she's been crying
Shen's got blisters
On the soles of her feet
She can't walk but she's trying
Oh lord is there nothing more Anybody can do
Oh lord there must be something you can say
You can tell From the lines on her face
You can see That she's been there
Probably been moved on From every place
Cause she didn't fit in there

Phil Collins

Philip David Charles Collins (born January 30, 1951 in Chiswick, London) is an English rock and pop musician. He is best known as the lead singer and drummer of progressive rock group Genesis and as a Grammy and Academy Award-winning solo artist.

In total, Collins sang the lead vocals on eight American chart-toppers between 1984 and 1989; seven as a solo artist and one with Genesis. His singles, often dealing with lost love, ranged from the drum-heavy "In the Air Tonight", to the dance pop of "Sussudio", to the political statements of his most successful song, "Another Day in Paradise". His international popularity transformed Genesis from a progressive rock group to a regular on the pop charts and an early MTV mainstay.

Collins' professional career began as a drummer, first with obscure rock group Flaming Youth and then more famously with Genesis. In Genesis, Collins originally supplied only backing vocals for front man Peter Gabriel; it would not be until Gabriel's departure in 1975 that he became the group's lead singer. As the decade closed, Genesis' first international hit, "Follow You, Follow Me", demonstrated a drastic change from the band's early years. His concurrent solo career, heavily influenced by his personal life, brought both him and Genesis commercial success. According to Atlantic Records, Collins' total worldwide sales as a solo artist, as of 2002, were over 100 million.

David Bowie

The Best Of David Bowie 1969-1974

This excellent compilation draws from the albums The Man Who Sold The World, Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, Pin-Ups, Aladdinsane, Diamond Dogs and his opus magnum Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars. It thus provides some of his best work with producer Tony Visconti plus a wide variety of different musical styles. There's the wistful pop of Space Oddity and Starman, the pre-punk aggro of Jean Genie (supposedly written about Iggy Pop), the anthemic rock of Rebel Rebel, the 60s pop of Sorrow and Oh You Pretty Things (This was a hit for Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits in 1971). There's also the heavy rock of Man Who Sold The World (a hit for Lulu in the late 1960s) and All The Young Dudes (a hit for Mott The Hoople in 1973), the bleak ballad Drive-In Saturday, his fast and aloof interpretation of Let's Spend The Night Together and the phenomenal and breathtaking Life On Mars with its gripping arrangement and poetic lyrics. Other favorites of mine include the catchy Prettiest Star and Changes with its interesting wordplay, plus the magnificent Diamond Dogs with its howling hound sounds. The choice of tracks is highly intelligent and although these things are always subjective, I do for once agree with the selection of the compilers. Of course, Bowie had a novelty hit in 1973, The Laughing Gnome, but it would have been out of place on this album so I won't complain of the omission, and it was recorded long before 1969. Bowie's early work has stood the test of time very well. These are all strong, melodic songs that still evoke vivid images and emotions. This album well and truly deserves its five stars.

The Beatles
1967-1970

The "Red" and "Blue" Beatles CDs are testament to the genius of the band's music and are an excellent overview and a great place to start for those uninitiated (if there are such people) with the greatest band in history.
1962-1966 ("Red") covers the Beatles' Merseybeat era, a time when the Beatles were considered a singles "teenybopper" band. Among the best cuts on the first CD are "Please Please Me", "She Loves You", "Eight Days a Week", and "Ticket to Ride".

Their progression from teenyboppers to "serious band" begins to show in the songs from 1965's Rubber Soul, including "Norwegian Wood", featuring George Harrison on the sitar, and John Lennon's introspective "In My Life", which hints at the band's glorious and more complex studio work that was to follow.

The Red CD collection ends with two songs from 1966's Revolver, a record that placed the band on even higher creative ground: Paul McCartney's masterpiece "Eleanor Rigby" is the first time a string quartet accompanied a rock and roll record, and "Yellow Submarine" was one in a line of catchy, childlike songs written for resident jester and drummer extrodinaire Ringo Starr.

"1967-1970" (or the "Blue" album) compiles singles, Number One hits, and key album cuts from the "Sgt. Pepper," "The Beatles," "Abbey Road," and "Let it Be" albums. Unlike "1," which excludes important tracks that didn't top the chart, the Blue album is a more comprehensive survey of the group's later work. There's the deliciously trippy "Strawberry Fields Forever," the impossibly catchy "Revolution," George Harrison's masterpiece "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," and a personal favorite of mine, the bluesy b-side "Don't Let Me Down." Another gem is John Lennon's strikingly beautiful "Across the Universe" pulled from the "Let it Be" album. Haunting and surreal, it's a nice segueway into the closing track, the Number One hit "The Long and Winding Road." Arguably one of the most vital greatest hits albums on the market, "1967-1970" is required listening.

Definitive Ray Charles

[ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]

There are plenty of Ray Charles compilations to choose from - some focusing on a particular era or a particular aspect of Ray's career. This particular compilation is the first to combine his fifties music (recorded for Atlantic) and his sixties music (recorded for ABC-Paramount) on one collection - it also includes a few tracks from more recent times.

The most famous of his early songs is probably the often-covered Hallelujah I love her so. What'd I say and I've got a woman are among the other great songs from Ray's fifties music that are included here. All those three were written by Ray, although he also recorded songs written by others even then. Fans of Ray's fifties music will need to buy a compilation devoted to those recordings - on this set, there are just 15 tracks from this era (about right for this compilation).

It is the sixties with which Ray will be forever associated and which is most strongly represented here. Despite Ray's ability to write his own songs, the two songs for which he is best remembered are both covers. Georgia on my mind is a Hoagy Carmichael song from 1931, while I can't stop loving you is a country song written by Don Gibson. In both cases, Ray did them his own way, broadening their appeal considerably.

I can't stop loving you was one of many country songs that Ray adapted to the R+B style. Some of his fans deserted him, but these recordings gained him more fans than he lost. What Ray showed was the main difference between different styles of music was the presentation - not the songs themselves. His re-interpretations of country songs are represented here by tracks 1 to 7 and track 9 of CD 2. Actually, he'd dabbled with the idea in the fifties, as his cover of I'm movin' on (CD 1, track 13) shows.

THE EVERLY BROTHERS DUOGRAPHY

It all started in Kentucky, U.S.A. Isaac Donald (b.2/1/1937) and Phillip (b.1/19/1939) Everly were raised in a musical family, steeped in one of the oldest musical traditions in America. The atmosphere of the coal mining towns of Kentucky and the songs which are the voice of the culture formed the Everly Brothers' sound which has endured for more than thirty years. Don and Phil are the sons of Ike and Margaret Everly, who, like their parents before them, were folk and country singers from central Kentucky. Their late father was one of the few "authentic" guitarists in American music. The influence of his thumb picking style can be heard in the music of players such as Merle Travis, Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler.

Soon after Don was born, Ike decided to leave the coal region and move to Chicago to pursue a career in music and find a better life for his young family. After he had established himself as a professional entertainer, Phil was born, and Ike decided to take a job in Iowa where he could raise his boys in a healthier rural environment. He joined KMA, a powerful radio station in Shenandoah, Iowa, where he was a staff artist until 1951. It was during this time that Don and Phil began working with their mother and father on radio and on stage.

THE EVERLY BROTHERS DUOGRAPHY

In 1953 the family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where they worked on WROL radio performing two shows per day and getting paid $ 90 per week. When the money ran out, Ike got in touch with Chet Atkins in Nashville. It wasn't long before Chet had one of Don's songs, "Thou Shalt Not Steal", recorded by Kitty Wells. It was a hit and the decision was made to split up the family act and send the brothers to Nashville.

The going was rough for the first two years. Ike worked as a barber and Margaret as a beautician to help support the boys while they made the rounds of the record companies.

Doris Day

Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff, known as Doris Day (born April 3, 1924), is an American singer, actress, and animal welfare advocate. A vivacious blonde with a wholesome image, she was one of the most prolific actresses of the 1950s and 1960s. Able to sing, dance, and play comedy and dramatic roles, she has been an all-round star whose personality has permeated many popular and diverse movies.

Day's popularity as a radio performer and vocalist led directly to a career in films. After her separation from second husband George Weidler in 1948, Day was apparently set to leave Los Angeles and return to her mother's home in Cincinnati when her agent Al Levy convinced her to attend a party at the home of composer Jule Styne. Her personal circumstances at the time and her reluctance to perform on such short notice apparently contributed to an emotive performance of Embraceable You which so impressed Styne and his partner Sammy Cahn that they recommended her for a role in Romance on the High Seas (which they were currently working on for Warner Bros). The withdrawal of Betty Hutton (due to pregnancy) having left the main role to be recast. Thus, Day began her film career in a "peppy" Betty Hutton-esque role.

作者: ozimex999    时间: 2006-11-11 08:48 PM

Doris Day

In 1959, Day entered her most successful phase as a film actress with a series of romantic comedies, starting with the hugely popular Pillow Talk co-starring Rock Hudson, who became a lifelong friend. The film received positive reviews and was a box office favourite. It also brought a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actress for Day. She and Hudson made two more films together, and she also made two films alongside James Garner, starting with 1963's The Thrill Of It All. Many of her 1960s films ignored her singing abilities and painted her as a good-hearted woman with a strong will, a hint of naïveté, and the purest virtue. Algonquin Roundtable member and showbusiness wit Oscar Levant, who had known Day earlier in her career, summed up the paradox of Day's late-blooming ingenue phase when he famously said, "I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin." But the public loved Day's light, frothy comedies of this period, buying enough tickets to make her by far the top female movie star in America during the first half of the 1960s.

Elvis Presley

Overview

Elvis Aaron Presley, in the humblest of circumstances, was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1948, and Elvis graduated from Humes High School there in 1953.
Elvis’ musical influences were the pop and country music of the time, the gospel music he heard in church and at the all-night gospel sings he frequently attended, and the black R&B he absorbed on historic Beale Street as a Memphis teenager. In 1954, he began his singing career with the legendary Sun Records label in Memphis. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor. By 1956, he was an international sensation. With a sound and style that uniquely combined his diverse musical influences and blurred and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a whole new era of American music and popular culture.

He starred in 33 successful films, made history with his television appearances and specials, and knew great acclaim through his many, often record-breaking, live concert performances on tour and in Las Vegas. Globally, he has sold over one billion records, more than any other artist. His American sales have earned him gold, platinum or multi-platinum awards for 150 different albums and singles, far more than any other artist. Among his many awards and accolades were 14 Grammy nominations (3 wins) from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, which he received at age 36, and his being named One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 by the United States Jaycees. Without any of the special privileges his celebrity status might have afforded him, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army.

His talent, good looks, sensuality, charisma, and good humor endeared him to millions, as did the humility and human kindness he demonstrated throughout his life. Known the world over by his first name, he is regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth century popular culture. Elvis died at his Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977.

The King Of Rock 'N' Roll: The Complete 50's Masters

This five-disc set was the first release in BMG's effort to present Elvis's recorded legacy in a manner befitting the most important musical artist of his time. The strategy was simple--showcase, in chronological order, remastered versions of the King's 1950s output, from his sessions with Sam Phillips at Sun Studios (where they arguably invented the very notion of rock & roll) through his 1958 Army induction. Not everything Elvis recorded in the '50s was great (just as not everything he recorded in Hollywood was rotten), but there are dozens of tracks here that, quite simply, can make a bad day seem all that much better. Which surely still makes him the king of something. Suffice it to say this is one box set that lives up to its title. --Bill Holdship

Louis Armstrong

Lois Armstrong, London c. 1934

Louis Armstrong was born in a poor section of New Orleans known as “the Battlefield” on August 4, 1901. By the time of his death in 1971, the man known around the world as Satchmo was widely recognized as a founding father of jazz – a uniquely American art form. His influence, as an artist and cultural icon, is universal, unmatched, and very much alive today.

Louis Armstrong’s achievements are remarkable. During his career, he:
Through the years, Louis entertained millions, from heads of state and royalty to the kids on his stoop in Corona. Despite his fame, he lived a simple life in a working-class neighborhood. To this day, everyone loves Satchmo – just the mention of his name makes people smile

Wonderful World of Louis Armstrong

--"Mrs. Nixon and I share the sorrow of millions of Americans at the death of Louis Armstrong. One of the architects of an American art form, a free and individual spirit, and an artist of worldwide fame, his great talents and magnificent spirit added richness and pleasure to all our lives."-- President Richard Nixon

It's already been said, and by people whose opinions matter exponentially more than that of a smalltime critic. Any decent Louis Armstrong anthology gives proof to the praises that follow, and this is a far better than decent anthology. It is a judiciously chosen and clearly re-mastered audio monument to a colossus.

AIR SUPPLY

Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock first met in 1974, during an Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar, in which they had both secured roles as apostles. On break time between rehearsals, Graham would sit by himself and play his guitar. It didn’t take long before a curious Russell wandered over and began to sing along with Graham’s tunes, and the two quickly discovered a smooth musical harmony as well as a friendship that would endure over the years.

They began singing in the local coffeehouses in Australia, sometimes for their meals, and often performing soft, mellow love songs, which were contrary to ‘hard rock’ and ‘glam rock’, both of which were popular then.

Forming their own group, they dubbed it "AIR SUPPLY", a name that Graham says ‘came to him in a dream ... on a billboard.  He thought of their music as a "breath of fresh air", and it was indeed. It was also a hit!

After the completion of ‘Superstar’ in 1975, they joined up with Frank Esler-Smith (music director of ‘Superstar’) as well as Jeremy Paul, signed a contract with CBS records, and released their first big hit, Love & Other Bruises in 1976, which also saw them rank on the Australian music charts at a whopping #5!

They followed with a gold record from the self-titled album Air Supply, and in 1977, scored another big hit, Do What You Do, from their second album The Whole Thing’s Started. The same year, their good friend, Rod Stewart, asked them to join him on a tour through the United States and Canada. This opportunity provided the stepping stones that would enable Air Supply to begin its rise to fame in America.

SHIRLEY BASSEY

Born on January 8, 1937, in a section of Cardiff, Wales that was then referred to as "Tiger Bay". Shirley Veronica Bassey was the seventh child of Henry and Eliza Bassey. At that time, Tiger Bay was a multi-ethnic, working-class community comprised of people from all over the world. Henry Bassey was a seaman of Nigerian ancestry and Eliza Bassey hailed from Northern England.

At age 15, young Shirley began working in a local factory. Having displayed an extraordinary talent for singing from a very early age, it was not long before Shirley began her professional career singing in working men's clubs. Throughout her youth, Shirley had been influenced by several American pop and jazz singers including Billy Eckstine, Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan and, most significantly, Judy Garland. By Bassey's own admission, Garland had a profound influence on her professional craft. Garland is also the performer to whom Bassey has been most closely compared throughout her career. Though unable to read music, Bassey dazzled her earliest audiences with pitch-perfect renditions of Horne's "Stormy Weather" and Garland's "Over the Rainbow".

In 1959, Shirley hit the big time when she sent two singles; "Kiss Me, Honey Honey, Kiss Me" and "As I Love You", to the top of the British charts, simultaneously. That was the beginning of a long, illustrious recording career. A string of hits followed as "Climb Every Mountain", "As Long As He Needs Me", "You'll Never Know", "I'll Get By" and "Reach For The Stars" all raced to the top of the British charts. In a few short years, she established herself as Britain's premier female vocalist. However, in America, success as a recording artist would prove somewhat more elusive. To be sure, she was a huge attraction on the American cabaret circuit. She was a headliner at top tier venues across the country, including the Persian Room of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan and the Cocoanut Grove of the former Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. However, her early recordings failed to crack the upper regions of the US Charts.

Shirley Bassey - The Greatest Hits

Shirley Bassey was immensely popular in England during the 60s and 70s. For a while, it seemed as though she was destined to sing all the soundtracks to the James Bond films--and for a while, she did! On this CD, there are three James Bond soundtracks--"Goldfinger," "Diamonds are Forever," and "Moonraker." They are digitally remastered for this CD. While people may remember Shirley for "Goldfinger," my personal favourite is "Moonraker." For Shirley Bassey fans, this CD is a great find, and well worth purchasing. She truly has a wonderful voice, and this CD with the selections of her "greatest" serves as a nice collection--displacedhuman

Shirley Bassey

This CD takes some of her classics and spins them in an amazing, inventive and new direction! Yes, it's different from the orginal songs - but what made it so different back then is recaptured by the talented djs who spun Ms. Bassey's honey voice into the sounds of cool!

Worth a listen - and a dance!

Babys (John Waite)

John Charles Waite, born on July 4, 1952, in Lancaster, Lancashire, England, is a rock singer.

Waite has been a solo artist for most of his career but was first known as lead singer of The Babys, a group which had moderate chart success but enjoyed a solid following for their concert tours.

Shortly after the release of the Babys' fifth album "On the Edge" in October 1980, the group broke up.

Waite launched his solo career with his 1982 album titled Ignition, which produced the hit single "Change", written by Holly Knight and included on the Vision Quest soundtrack.

His next album, No Brakes, made him an international star. This album included the smash hit "Missing You," which went to No.1 on the American charts.

There finally seemed to be mass recognition for a singer who, certainly for those familiar with his work, was underestimated and underpromoted.

"If Anybody Had a Heart" from the soundtrack of About Last Night starring Demi Moore showcases Waite's voice along with "Deal for Life" written by Martin Page and Bernie Taupin from Days of Thunder.

He has also served as the lead singer and bass player of The Babys and as lead singer for Bad English (featuring Journey members Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain, along with future Journey member Deen Castronovo).

Bad English's "When I See You Smile" penned by Diane Warren was also a number one song in the United States in late 1989. He co-wrote "Price of Love", another top 10 hit from the first Bad English album.

There was nearly a six year gap between his 1984 chart success and the Bad English single. During this period Waite produced solo albums "Mask of Smiles" and "Rovers Return" marked by sensitive lyrics and haunting melodies.

He was one of the artists chosen by Ringo Starr in 2003 to tour with his All Starr Band.

The Babys' biggest hit, "Every Time I Think of You," begins with the lyric, "Every time I think of you/It always turns out good." Waite's biggest solo hit, "Missing You," begins with the lyric, "Every time I think of you/I always catch my breath." He used the Lyrics of Every Time I Think of you to get started with Missing You. The backing track of Missing You was made by Chas Sandford years earlier. Missing You was the last track to be added to No Brakes

In 2006, there was a remake of Missing You as a duet with Alison Krauss, released as single in the Country Charts in the United States

He and Krauss appeared on the Tonight Show on February 5, 2007 to perform "Missing You."

Spotlight Reviews

John Waite has the same problem fellow singer Paul Carrack has--they both have been in several bands across several record labels and done solo work. This makes for a challenge when compiling key tracks from their careers. John Waite did five albums with The Babys 1976-1980. Then he did four solo albums 1982-1987. Then he did two albums with Bad English 1989-1991. Now, as of this review, he has done four more solo albums 1995-2003. In order for "Falling Backwards" to be a complete experience it should include songs from all of those albums. I realize that this is volume one, but why not just put out a two disc anthology and leave it at that? Also, where's the single "These Times Are Hard For Lovers" from 1987?? The sticker on the front states that John put this compilation together--so...what, he didn't think that song was good enough to put on a best of? In this day and age where I can make my own compilation, it just seems that the record companies should get it right. Other than this gripe, this compilation is the better of the two that John has. I see this compilation was produced in 1996, so it's about time for a digitally remastered, two-disc anthology for John--maybe in 2006???

Engelbert Humperdinck
1854-1921

Engelbert Humperdinck is best known for his fairy-tale opera Hansel and Gretel, first staged in Weimar, Germany in 1893. He was born on September 1, 1854, and produced his first composition after receiving piano lessons when he was only seven. His first attempts at works for the stage were two Singspiels when he was 13. Obviously, this young man had talent, but his parents did not approve of his becoming a musician, so despite them encouraging him to study architecture, he took music classes at the Cologne Conservatory.

Humperdinck received the Frankfurt Mozart Prize in 1876, and with its help he was able to travel to Munich. There, Humperdinck continued to take classes to develop his talent in music, finding many opportunities to gain experience both composing and performing. For over ten years he met many important composers such as Franz Lachner, Giovanni Sgambati, and Richard Wagner and heard their works. He eventually became one of Wagner's most important students and assistants, and eventually became music tutor to the great composer's son, Siegfried Wagner. Humperdinck subsequently held various teaching positions of distinction and enjoyed a long and fruitful collaboration in the theatre with the great playwright and director Max Reinhardt, providing incidental music for a number of Shakespearean productions in Berlin. While in Berlin, as any good uncle would.

Engelbert Humperdinck - His Greatest Hits

Engelbert Humperdinck, who at the circa 1968 height of his career shared a manager with fellow hunk Tom Jones, has never enjoyed the campy appreciation that has come to Jones in recent years--mostly because he's way too earnest compared to the teasingly all-man singer of "What's New Pussycat" and "She's a Lady." Humperdinck certainly deserves a place on some space-age bachelor's mix tape with the quietly ebullient "Quando Quando Quando," the quietly invitational "Winter World of Love," and the quietly fatalistic "Les Bicyclettes de Belsize"--maybe yours. Or at least your dad's. --Rickey Wright

This CD is a re-issue of an album originally released on the Parrot label in the US in the early 70's and contains most of Engelbert's Top 40 hits and more memorable album cuts. Licensing conflicts between record companies lead to the exclusion of some early 70's material that was (like this album) originally issued on the Parrot label but overall this one disc set captures about 85 percent of Engelbert's most memorable hit material. This set does pre date 1976's "After The Lovin" album and single so that material is not included. Among the radio hits featured are Top 20 staples like "A Man Without Love", "Am I That Easy To Forget", "Winter World Of Love", and of course his break out hit "Release Me". For the casual fan or the budget conscious this is a good set.

CILLA BLACK

Born Priscilla Maria Veronica White, on the 27th May 1943, she grew up in a very musically oriented household in one of the toughest parts of Liverpool. Living with her parents and three brothers she was often encouraged to practice her innate singing talent by performing to the rest of her family.
During her late teens a sheer drive to become famous made her adamant that she would not be labeled as just another girl "suitable for office work". Understandably, she wanted more from life and could regularly be found escaping to the trendy haunts of the Cavern club where she'd hang coats earning five bob an hour. Perfectly placed amongst the up-and-coming stars of the day she wowed them with her singing and confidently convinced the powers that be to let her share the spotlight on stage! She also served coffee at the Zodiac (Duke Street) another clubbers' haven, where, incidentally, she met her husband to be, Bobby Willis.

Thanks to a lot of support from her friends she quickly became a mini-celebrity in her own neighbourhood, performing alongside so many legendary acts that were fundamental in establishing the Mersey Sound, such as The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Fourmost and Rory Storm and the Hurricanes.
Then, due to a twist of fate, Priscilla, known to friends as Cilla, almost overnight received a new stage name, when the music paper the "Mersey Beat" misprinted it. So, as if by magic, she became Cilla Black, a name that she favoured and happily kept.
It wasn't long until Cilla came to the attention of Brian Epstein, a local talent scout and manager of The Beatles. Epstein was introduced to her by none other than John Lennon, who persuaded him to arrange an audition at The Majestic Ballroom in Birkenhead. Unfortunately, the combination of nerves and singing to The Beatles, who played in their key, made the audition a flop. No matter, all was not lost, as to her surprise she was later spotted by Epstein while singing "Bye, Bye Blackbird" in the jazzy surroundings of the Blue Angel club. This performance finally convinced him to sign her, so on the 6th September 1963, she became his only female vocalist!
There was an immediate bond between Cilla and Epstein. From the moment he met his starlet he wanted to nurture the 'Judy Garland' qualities he believed she possessed, having high aspirations of creating a British icon who, in his prophetic words, would be "...one of the biggest stars in this country for thirty or forty years". His faith, combined with Cilla's talent, effortlessly convinced George Martin, the renowned producer of Matt Monro, Shirley Bassey and The Beatles, that she was worthy of signing to Parlophone Records (a subsidiary label of the EMI Group).
Shortly afterwards, Cilla Black made her debut on the British singles charts with one of the first of many songs given to her by her peers John Lennon and Paul McCartney. "Love of the Loved", a song she'd often heard The Beatles perform at the Cavern, made a modest impression on the British charts when it was released on the 27th September 1963.
This was soon to be overshadowed by her next release, which Epstein discovered on a trip to the USA. "Anyone Who Had a Heart", a song by Burt Bacharach, had already proved to be a massive hit for Dionne Warwick which Cilla, as a keen follower of the US Top 100, had already admired prior to it being suggested. Her knockout rendition recorded in January 1964 went on to become not only her first #1 but still, to this day, the biggest selling single of all time by a British female recording artist.

Also included is a booklet featuring many stunning color photos from EMI's archives, as well as rarities from Cilla's personal collection. 25 total tracks. 2005.

Okay I am biased as I compiled these collections for EMI but I honestly believe for the money both offer great value and provide a good chronological insight into Cilla's musical heyday of the '60s & '70s.

Each CD in the "Cilla in the..." series features essential recordings each digitally remastered at the legendary Abbey Road studios. This includes chart hits, classic album cuts, fan favourites and material by songwriting greats like Burt Bacharach, Marvin Gaye, Phil Spector, Paul McCartney, The Bee Gees, Jackie DeShannon, Roger Cook & Roger Greenaway and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

If that wasn't enough incentive to pick up a copy each CD contains rarities, stunning photos and detailed sleeve notes taking you step-by-step through Cilla's career/life!

A lot of time and effort went into this project and hopefully you'll enjoy it.

Ricky Nelson

Ricky Nelson was a teen idol who had something more than good looks going for him - namely, talent. On television, he acted out his real-life role as the son of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson in the Fifties. As a rock-and-rolling teenager on The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, he practically grew up in the nation’s living rooms. In the recording studio, having landed a contract based on his TV stardom, he more than made the grade. No mere rock and roll pretender, Nelson was the real thing: a gentle-voiced singer/guitarist with an instinctive feel for the country-rooted side of rockabilly. And he had exquisite taste in musicians, utilizing guitarist James Burton (formerly a Dale Hawkins sideman, later an Elvis Presley accompanist) as his secret weapon in the studio.

Nelson’s first single - “A Teenager’s Romance” b/w “I’m Walkin’,” the latter a Fats Domino song - made the Top Ten shortly after its release in April 1957. He was sixteen years old at the time. The next year, he reached #1 with “Poor Little Fool” (which was written by Sharon Sheeley, who was Eddie Cochran’s girlfriend). His discerning taste in material - a rare talent in one so young - also led him to “Hello Mary Lou” (his signature song) and “Travelin’ Man,” both of which topped the charts. All totaled, Nelson scored an incredible 33 Top Forty hits in a seven-year period.

For his sixth album, titled Rick is 21, he dropped the “y” from his name. As the maturing Nelson’s appeal with the teen audience waned, he turned his attention to a more country-flavored sound. One of the first country-rockers, Nelson experienced a creative renaissance at the outset of the Seventies. He formed the Stone Canyon Band, whose sweet country-rock sound anticipated the laid-back likes of the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt. One of the biggest hits of his career, “Garden Party,” pointedly rejected the notion that he would allow himself to be relegated to a nostalgia act. Until his untimely death in a 1985 plane crash, Nelson remained a hard-working musician who performed up to 200 dates a year.

Ricky Nelson - 25 Greatest Hits

From 1957 to 1962, RICKY NELSON charted thirty Top 40 hits, more than any other artist at the time except Elvis Presley. Thirty Top 40 chart hits in a six year run is very impressive, considering that some recording artists racked up a possible two dozen hits over a couple decades' time span[if not more] during the Rock Era.[These thirty Top 40 hits does not include the dozens of other "45's" Nelson charted on the lower 60 chart positions throughout the remainder of his almost thirty year career, which was cut short by his untimely death in a plane crash while on one of his music tours in 1985.] Many of Ricky's early records[vinyl 45's] where double hits with both the "A" side and the "B" side placing/peaking a position on the Billboard and Cashbox Magazine Hot 100 Singles charts, plus receiving massive radio station airplay during each single's[recording] respective heyday.

Along with brother David Nelson, the family starred in the long-running radio and television series "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet" from 1944 to 1966; with Ricky's singing[career] often featured in the show's weekly themes and gaining him national exposure to his unique musical attributes. His record sales skyrocketed into the millions, and is credited with selling close to 70 million of his own recordings. I can recall seeing him on his parent's TV show reruns when I was a child, and proudly became his fan at age 7. Many of the songs on "25 GREATEST HITS" have become staples of modern day Oldies/Classic Pop-Rock oriented radio stations. RICKY NELSON remains the most enduring, interesting and gifted of all the Teen Idols, the ultimate musician among them all and he will never be forgotten.

Cliff Richard

Biography

1940—1958: Childhood

Cliff Richard was born at the King English Hospital, Victoria Street, Lucknow, India in 1940 to parents Rodger and Dorothy (née Dazely) Webb. A year later his family moved to Calcutta. In 1947, following Indian independence, the family moved to Britain.

The Webbs moved from comparative wealth in India (with servants) to a much lower standard of living in England. For three years the Webbs did not have their own home and stayed with relatives. In 1951, they were awarded a council house in the town of Cheshunt. Richard has recalled his father having to make furniture from packing cases

1958—1963: Success and stardom

Beginning as a member of an obscure skiffle group, Harry Webb soon became the lead singer of the rock and roll group the Drifters (not to be confused with the American group of the same name). Before their first large scale appearance, at the Regal Ballroom in Ripley in 1958, they adopted the name "Cliff Richard and the Drifters". The four members of the band were Webb, Ian "Sammy" Samwell on guitar, Terry Smart on drums and Norman Mitham on guitar. None of the other three played with the later and better known Shadows, although several would write songs for Richard's later career.

In the summer of 1958 Richard obtained a recording contract with EMI's Columbia label for himself only, leaving the band behind. He remained with EMI until signing with Decca in 2004. Richard recorded his first single on 24 July 1958 with the (pre-Marvin/Welch) Drifters. However, producer Norrie Paramor had little faith in the band and brought in two experienced session men, Ernie Shear and Frank Clarke, to provide backing on lead guitar and bass.

For his debut session, Paramor provided Richard with a song called "Schoolboy Crush", a cover of an American record by Bobby Helms. Richard was permitted to record one of his own songs for the B-side; this was "Move It", written by the Drifters' Samwell (famously on a number "715" Green Line Bus on the way to Cliff's house for a rehearsal).

There are a number of stories about why the A-side song was replaced by the intended B-side. One is that Norrie Paramor's young daughter raved about the B-side and not the A-side. Another possible reason for the flip was that influential TV producer Jack Good, who used the act for his TV show Oh Boy!, wanted the only song on his show to be "Move It".

In any event, the single was flipped and went to #2 on the UK charts. Music critics Roy Carr and Tony Tyler would later write that it was the first genuine British rock classic (to be followed by Johnny Kidd and the Pirates's "Shakin' All Over") before the Beatles' hit "I Saw Her Standing There".

In the early days, Cliff Richard was marketed as the British equivalent to Elvis Presley. As did previous British rockers such as Marty Wilde, Richard adopted a Presley-like dress and hairstyle. In performance he struck a pose of rock attitude, rarely smiling or looking directly at the audience or camera. His late 1958 and early 1959 follow-up singles, "High Class Baby", Lionel Bart's "Living Doll" were followed by "Mean Streak" which carried a rocker's sense of speed and passion. It was on "Living Doll" that the Drifters began to back Richard on record. By that time the band's lineup had changed with the arrival of Jet Harris, Tony Meehan, Hank Marvin, and Bruce Welch. The group was obliged to change its name to "The Shadows" after legal complications arose with the U.S. Drifters.

The Best Retrospective of Sir Cliff That's Out There and Very Well Remastered To Boot!, February 26, 2006
By  Frederick Baptist (Singapore)

It tells the story of how a young teenage heart-throb started out in the late 50's as the front man of the Shadows (another great band by the way)to produce safe, goody two shoes-type rock and roll that won a lot of fans (my mum included!)and ends in the 90's as a middle aged, seasoned performer, maturing in his faith and spiritual life as well.

Looking back, it's not surprising given his good looks and the way the record company packaged him that he was going to be so successful but to attribute this as the sole reason for his success would be disrespecting the music and the Shadows as the great quality of both the material and the backing band played very important parts as well.

Starting with the rocker "Move It", disc one ends with "Dreaming" representing a more adult Cliff covering more adult themes as in "Devil Woman" (brilliant song by the way), "Miss You Nights" and "We Don't Talk Anymore".

Disc 2 continues to describe the growth of the artiste but now more so than from a mere physical/chronological aging but from a spiritual and religious aging perspective as well as the material moves from "Wired for Sound" to "Some People", "From a Distance", "Saviour's Day", "Peace in Our Time" and ending with "The Millenium Prayer".

Not only are the track selections excellent, this album has been remastered very well and so the sound quality is brilliant. No other album showcases the "Whole Story" of Cliff's journey through his life and musical career as this one does on two discs and with 46 tracks, you are certainly getting great value for money.

Very highly recommended.

Marty Robbins

Mini Biography
He is known for many styles of music - pure honky-tonk, rockabilly, gospel, straight-ahead pop, blues and Hawaiian. But fans remember Marty Robbins best for his cowboy songs. Songs like "Big Iron", "Running Gun", "The Hanging Tree" and of course "El Paso" established Robbins as the master of the style of country music.

.

He and twin sister Mamie were born near Glendale, Ariz. As a child, Robbins (born Martin David Robinson) was fascinated with El Paso, Texas since childhood - both the name and the city itself. Marty's parents divorced when he was 12 and his mother moved the family to Phoenix. Robbins joined the Navy in 1943, where he learned to play guitar and began singing and songwriting during the three-year stint. After his discharge, he returned to Phoenix and held down a series of jobs. Eventually, he began singing in nightclubs, filling in one night as guitarist for a friend's band. Quite often, he performed under the pseudonym Jack Robinson (because his mother objected to his performing in nightclubs and he didn't want her to find out).

By 1950, he was performing regularly on Mesa, Ariz., station KTYL, and starred in the local TV series "Western Caravan" on KPHO in Phoenix. One night, country singer Little Jimmy Dickens appeared on the show and was so impressed with Robbins that he urged his record label, Columbia Records, to sign the young star. Robbins' first song, "Love Me or Leave Me Alone", was recorded in 1951. Although the song failed to chart on any of Billboard magazine's country singles chart (the magazine had separate sales, radio airplay and jukebox to monitor the performance of country songs at the time), Robbins was on his way to country stardom; one of the follow-up singles, "I'll Go On Alone", went No. 1 in early 1953. Robbins became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in February 1953.

A steady string of hits followed, ranging in styles from rockabilly ("That's All Right" and "Singing the Blues"), teenage love songs ("A White Sport Coat (and a Pink Carnation)") and of course, cowboy songs. He had already appeared in several B-westerns and had scored a country hit with "The Hanging Tree" (the title track to the movie starring Gary Cooper) when, in 1959, he began writing and recording songs for his legendary album "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs"). The all-time classic from the album of songs was "El Paso", the story of a gunfighter who dies after being shot at the end of the song. The song went No. 1 on Billboard magazine's country singles chart in December 1959, where it spent seven weeks; it also became his only No. 1 Hot 100 hit and became the first country song to win a Grammy. At just over 4:40, radio programmers were reluctant to play such a long song (most songs were half as long), but demand won out, and it soon became one of country music's all-time most popular songs on fan surveys. His 1976 No. 1 hit, "El Paso City", revisited the gunfighter's legend.

During the 1960s and 1970s, his career continued, with a second Grammy coming in 1970 with his No. 1 ode to his wife, Marizona, "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife." He also dabbled in television ("Marty Robbins' Spotlight") and stock car racing. He left Columbia Records in 1972 to begin a three-year stint at Decca (later MCA) Records; though he had some success there, he returned to Columbia in late 1975.

During his 31-year recording career, Robbins had 94 songs make Billboard's country charts, with 16 going to No. 1; 31 of his songs also placed on the Hot 100. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1982, just two months before suffering his third heart attack (he had also suffered heart attacks in 1969 and 1981). He underwent a quadruple bypass at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., but died Dec. 8, 1982. His only posthumous country hit came in 1983, when he scored a No. 10 hit with "Honkytonk Man", the title track to Clint Eastwood's film. While cowboy and western songs were his trademark, it was Robbins' style, grace and dignity, plus his on-stage ability to communicate with his audience and understated sense of humor that made him one of country music's most beloved performers.

Marty Robbins

Marty Robbins has more greatest-hits compilations than most artists have hits. This 20-cut single-disc collection is one of the better values, with a representative selection that extends from gunfighter balladry such as "El Paso" (his 1959 chart-topper and biggest crossover success) and "Big Iron" to the calypso-tinged "Devil Woman" to his cover of Gordon Lightfoot's folkish "Ribbon of Darkness." Throughout his 30-year recording career, Robbins combined a tremulous tenor with canny commercial instincts, stretching the boundaries of country music while expanding his popular base. He was equally at home with a cowboy song ("Red River Valley"), a gospel tune ("You Gave Me a Mountain"), and a slice of Hawaiian exotica ("Aloha Oe"). Inexplicably, the album features the schmaltzy "Love Is Blue" at the expense of "A White Sport Coat (And a Pink Carnation)," a '50s pop smash that remained one of his biggest hits. --Don McLeese

Just because you are not used to read English. That is nothing wrong. You can read a paragraph a day in the beginning. The more you read, your English will be improved.

It's too difficult for me to insist on reading English article, even if a paragraph,I'm so lazy a person I like listening to the music and watching TV in my spare time, and also I like reading, but it can not be writed in English, because there are too many words haven't been cognized at once by myself.so I need a dictionary, and then it will take much more extra time.but I am always a person want to do a thing which I like with little time, the less, the better ,for me.hehe.
