Feast for the less fortunate
by Chan Soo Wah

IN THE spirit of 1Malaysia, Hotel Nikko Kuala Lumpur together with the Tan Sri Tan Chin Tuan Foundation, Dale Lokman & Associates and Dutch Lady Milk Industries Bhd recently held a Chinese New Year celebration for those less fortunate at the hotel’s grand ballroom.

The event was attended by some 300 children and senior citizens from various homes such as Agathians, Ti Ratana, Shelter Home, Rumah Kids, Rumah Juara, Rumah Charis, Desa Amal, Vivenkanada, Joyhaven, Kairos for Community, Rumah Anak-Anak Yatim Shifa, Anak Yatim dan Anak Miskin Baitul Ehsan Taman Maluri and Al Khaadem Home of Hope.

"The objective of this event is to spread the spirit of multiracial celebration and to cultivate close camaraderie among the different races and cultures in Malaysia," said Hotel Nikko general manager Michael Borostyan.

He added that the event also marked the hotel’s first CSR (corporate social responsibility) project for 2010.

Borostyan also presented a mock cheque for RM20,000 from the hotel to the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NSCM) honorary general-secretary Dr Saunthari Somasundaram in support of NSCM’s work in creating awareness in the fight against cancer.

Meanwhile, Tan Sri Tan Chin Tuan Foundation (Singapura/Malaysia) council member Chew Kwee San also presented a mock cheque for RM120,000 to Tan Kiang Howe, the chairman of Soka Gakkai Malaysia (Johor) – a lay Buddhist organisation working towards the establishment of a peaceful society through the promotion of culture and education.

Dutch Lady Malaysia corporate communications head Jad Mahidin also pledged on behalf of her company a one-time contribution of 10 cartons of milk to the 10 welfare homes present at the event and 10 cartons of milk per month from April to December to StART Society in recognition of its effort in serving the artistic needs of these children.

At the event, which was hosted by veteran compere Datuk Mahadzir Lokman, the children and senior citizens were entertained with a lion dance performance, a face-changing act, a dance by Soka Gakkai members and a performance by the children from StART Society. Chan Soo Wah
