鵯台中学校は神戸市北区の南の端にあり、全学年６学級、在籍数１７３名という小規模な学校です。今年で開校３５年目を迎えています。平成17年より入居が始まった新興住宅地「ひよどり台南町１～４丁目」も本校の校区です。周辺は緑豊かで、大規模な神戸市の福祉ゾーン「しあわせの村」や市民防災センターなど、公共施設の多い地域です。また、須磨区、長田区、兵庫区と接しており、神戸のほぼ中心ともいえる位置にあります。したがって、東西、南北交通の要衝にあり、近くに自動車専用道路が縦横に走っています。学校の周囲には自然林も多く残っており、カブトムシの幼虫をたくさん見つけることができます。狸や狐も棲んでいるようで、穴を掘ったり、どこからかゴミをくわえてきて中庭などにほったらかしにするなど、よくイタズラをします。隣接されている「しあわせの村」などの福祉施設などでのフィールドワーク、シルバーハイツでのボランティア活動、校内では車椅子やアイマスク、高齢者擬似体験学習など、福祉やボランティア活動にも力を入れています。

The surrounding area is very beautiful with various city welfare facilities, athletic training center "Shiawase no Mura", and a disaster prevention center located nearby. Due to the abundance of natural woods, many different kinds of beetles and raccoons are often found on school property.
Hiyodori J.H.S. takes great pride in hosting different volunteer opportunities as well as incorporating the elderly and disabled people in such programs. For example, fieldwork at “Shiawase no Mura,” and volunteer work at “Silver height.”
