Nara period (8th century)
With downturned bulbous nose and tongue sticking out, wearing a short crown, decorated in black, red and white pigment over dry lacquer (kanshitsu)
13¾in. (35cm.) long
Wood storage box inscribed Gigaku men, Yano Takehide sensei aigan, Nogami Toyoichiro kan (Gigaku mask, treasured by Yano Takehide sensei, authenticated by [the Noh mask scholar] Nogami Toyoichiro) and Showa juyonen hachigatsu San Sebasutian ni oite (August 1939, San Sebastian) on the reverse
