Secret new f/2.8 DX Nikkor ?

Secret new f/2.8 DX Nikkor ? by stargazer95050.
I was more curious about the setup -- why and what these two lenses are used for.
This guy was trying to keep this box out of sight -- looking at the portion of the lens I ccan see it is a f/2.8 ED DX.

There currently is only one f/2.8 DX lens -- the 17-55mm.
And that looks different from this

maybe he takes 2 pics and makes them wiggle to look 3D. Google it, it's rad!

That lens looks pretty worn for a prototype (paint chips on that lip and it's rubbed pretty hard near that area.)

It almost seems as if the second camera is mounted upside down next to it with that wingnut.

Some kind of messed up stereoscopy?

That is very curious.

From the discussion it seems like it's to muffle the camera sounds. Having the second body upside-down would allow the shooter to shoot with the other body simply by flipping the box.

He said it was a 3-D camera. He also said not all the shots he took would come out - it was a bit finicky. I got the explanation yesterday but might have been too tipsy to care.

Two identical cameras & lenses makes a lot more sense for 3D than the odd combo in that box

It looks exactly like my 17-55 zoomed to about 20mm - 21mm. It's probably just the cameras and lenses he has - he's got a 20mm or 24mm on the other camera, zooms to match as closely as he can. With photoshop he can match pretty closely.

I asked the guy and he said it was for shooting 3D. I told him I was surprised that the lenses were different and he replied he was playing with different effects... I'm suspicious.

At nikonrumors someone had a more "CSI-kind" of look at the photo and apparently also ons a "old" 17-55mm les and his comment was

It’s not a current 17-55, which has 10 ft and 3 m lined up in the focus markings. This one goes [infinity](white), 10ft (yellow), 2m (white), [?](yellow)
It might be a 17-55, but it’s a new one if it is.
nikonrumors.com/2010/03/14/new-nikon-f2-8-dx- lens-spotted...

However there can be two slightly different 17-55mm versions as posted in a reply

Also the small visible portion of the viewfinder looks different from DX newer bodies.

The claims about 3D are not confirmed and shooting 3D usually is done with identical lenses/cameras. And doesn't involve the kind of secrecy this photographer exhibited. And "The Brides of March" is not a shoot typical for 3D unless you do close-ups of big boobs

See! This is how rumors get started. When one carries a big black box with a small lens sticking out of it!

this is definitely the new 17-55 2.8 DX. which i have myself and i did a direct comparison and its dead on with it zoomed out to around 22mm.

im also pretty sure that the other lens is an older 35 or 85 1.8, i can tell by the size and by the focus ring. and he has a filter of some sort on it.

Nichiyou−Soda says:

this is DEFINATELY the CURRENT 17-55 2.8 DX
just LOOK AT THE BARREL CONSTRUCTION
LOOK AT THIS VERY CAREFULLY

excuse caps. it's just seriously LOOK AT IT. it's EXACTLY THE SAME meaning it's NOT A NEW LENS. it's THE CURRENT LENS
the guy who owns this rig. was probably trying to keep it out of sight because it looks quite weird and he didn't want to attract excessive attention.
the so called "Rumor" is bust. as THIS IS NOT A NEW LENS

also by looking carefully at the top holes on the box. i can see the metering mode switch on the prism. so it may be a D2X/D2Hs etc. or oddly a D3/D3s/D3X shooting in DX

I lol'd. The barrel looks too uniform in diameter along the entire length of the lens to be the current 17-55 in my opinion.

I think whats in the box is more of a secret than the lens. Probably the new replacement for the D700

D700 replacement using a DX lens ? Possible but less likely.
If there's a secret new camera inside, I'd guess it is a D300 successor

Green Hocker  Pro User  says:

An aluminum frame with a snap-on nylon fabric front? I seriously doubt that box is used for muffling any camera noise. It looks like there is nothing inside to reduce noise. If that is in fact what he was using this for, it looks like the worst DIY approach ever.

This reduces shutter noise: www.soundblimp.com/nikon.htm

if its a new secret lens why isnt this guy putting some tape on it to cover the lens infos?

I agree with Green Hocker. Wouldn't be an ideal solution for noise reduction.

Guys? Why would someone try to hide a lens an keep the ring with the specs in plain sight?! Think about it! what he is really hiding is the CAMERA.

There are two of Nikons new mirrorless camera, with corresponding lenses designed for the new mount.

That is why hiding the camera shape is so important ;-)

Hmmm... why test a DX lens on a FX body? Maybe I'm wrong, but it's possible to see the side of the top part of the body. At the side of the flash mount there is a button, right?
