My older cousin (ironically, a nail technician) bleached it for me, but it was an "at-home" sort of thing.
She separated the blond from the black that lays on top of it in sort of a zig-zag way first though, then bleached it three times. (pardon my bad explanation skills) It was more like an unplanned experiment waiting to go wrong, but turned out pretty okay.

i have a question :<
so my natural hair color is black, and a year ago i bleached the bottom part of my hair

5 months ago, tried dying the bleached part of my hair red, and within 5 days, the red turned back to the light brown that i got from the bleaching. i saw the dye run down the drain when i showered

why can't my hair retain the red dye? T^T
oh, and today, i bleached part of my bangs and 3 days later, im going to try to dye all the bleached parts red... again.
[edit] the bottom part of my hair looks a little orange because it was in the phase of losing the red dye... that picture was taken 4 days after i tried dying my hair red.

red dye is hard to maintain if you don't want it to fade into brown, because regardless of whether you saw it run down the drain (maybe because you didn't rinse it out enough the first time ^^; but it's perfectly normal) it will eventually turn brown. do you use colour shampoo? if you want to keep the red a lot longer maybe try switching shampoos, use cold water, and limit the number of times you wash your hair because a little dye washes out each time. :3 hope this helps, whenever I get a touchup my mother puts a colour primarily red. :p

So I dyed my hair for the first time last night,
and I'm really pleased with the color<3 It's EXACTLY like my natural hair!
I just want to know how fast usually, does the L'Oreal new excellence creme hair dye last before it starts to fade?

ps: Sorry for blurring my mouth a lot, most of these pictures were taken just for the color comparisons & I made gross faces---
WORTH IT?: For now, yes
Natural Hair type:
The usual: thick, straight, black (brownish tint in hard sunlight)
Hair History:
VIRGIN TO HAIR DYE, but I used to use Sun-in to lighten my hair a little 5 months back because I was pale
as hell in summer and thought brown hair would be prettier on me~ (it was, but now it's lightening REALLY
unevenly and reddishbrown );!)
Hair Dye: L'Oreal Paris, NEW Excellence Creme in #4 DARK BROWN (Natural)
Price: $8
Changes:
My hair is shiny & healthy looking, a bit drier to the touch now ;( but nothing I can't live with.
I followed the directions and it was really easy, even though I managed to get hair dye on a small portion on the
wall. The application was nice & easy; I read reviews after I dyed my hair (whoops) and many have said the no-
drip formula is great for first timers, woo(:
My hair isn't that long, but it's hella layered, so I used most of the dye with about 2 cm left in the bottle. I left it in
a little over 30 minutes (I timed myself for the first 20 or so minutes, then handwashed some laundry & took a shower
to get the dye off so I wouldn't be leaving a HUGE mess in my bathroom). The conditioner is really thick, it took a while
to get it all out of my hair, but it made my hair feel really soft after! I didn't towel dry it like I usually did, I let it air dry.
I'm still pretty much in love with the color. It looked really natural after I dyed it,
but L'Oreal dyes do run about 1-2 shades darker. Not that I'm complaining(;

MY HAIR LENGTH- about to where my bra strap is, a little shorter than mid back.
MY NATURAL COLOR- dark brown
MY HAIR NOW- soft black, over bleached blonde, with about 4 inches of my natural hair roots.
THE SITUATION- 2 weeks ago i decided i wanted to go deep burgandy. i used revlon's deep burgandy and came out with the no change in the soft black (remember this part of my hair is over bleach blonde), & a red brown color to the 4 inches of my natural roots.
THE PLAN- i plan on getting color oops extra strength in hopes to get the black part of my hair (over bleach blonde) to a light-medium brown. i plan on doing a test strip of hair first and monitoring it to see how long i should leave the color oops in. if this is successful, i will apply it to the rest of my hair and then use Garnier 100% color in the color intense auburn hoping to get a burgandy color.
my main concert is what the color oops will do to my hair that is dyed black over bleach blonde. hopefully the close monitoring will get it to the light-medium brown i'm hoping for. i wouldn't want to go back to the blonde or a brassy color.
any suggestions or opinions will be greatly appreciated!!

my friend told me that if i dye my hair black , i wont be able to color it a lighter shade in the future cuz of the black dye.
is this true ?
i wanna dye my hair back to black for now . the top of my head is brown but the sides and back are black , so i want it to be all one color . i would dye it all brown but im afraid the colors are not gonna come out the same as the top and sides and also i want my hair to grow longer before i dye it again.
so my problem is that i cant decide if i should dye my hair black or not cz i know im going to want to dye it brown in the future when my hair is longer.

thats how it looks like now

It looks like your hair is dark brownish red, red being predominant of course.
Im sure your fine with dyeing it black. Too much dye will $#%$ your hair though.
Why not just keep it like this until your hair gets longer? It would be a whole lot easier, less money waste, and be more efficient.

HAIR LENGTH- slightly above the middle of my back
NATURAL COLOR- dark brown
COLOR NOW- soft black, over what i bleached blonde 8 months ago, with about 4 inches of my natural roots.
THE SITUATION- after i tried to go deep burgandy 2 weeks ago, the 4 inches of my natural roots came out reddish brown, with no difference to the rest of my hair, it stayed black. i decided to get color oops and try to get some of that black dye out, i've had it in about 4 months. i will monitor it closely to be sure it doesn't strip the color down to what was bleached blonde. then after that i will dye it with garnier 100% color in the shade intense auburn, hoping to get that color.
any suggestions or opinions are much welcomed!

Hi hair experts here, i'm in need of major help!! I just dyed and highlighted my hair at a professional salon today. Due to previous attempts at dyeing my hair black, when the stylist helped me to dye my hair dark brown, the colour could barely be " absorbed ", but thats fine with me.
However, when he helped me highlight the now ' black with a little shade of brown ' using bleaching powder. The highlights turned out to be those of dirty-bronze-like colour, similar to that of a copper wire.

<-- This pic looked as if my hair have multiple colours, but its just the lighting, ( & probably the dyes not being absorbed evenly )
I find that it doesn't suit me at all and is there anything i can do right now to save my hair? Is it possible to dye my entire hair now to a single light/dark brown tone? I can forego the highlights if its possible to be done. PLEASE HELP! THANKS!

In my experience, your friend is correct. Black is a
really hard color to come back from if its a dyed black. You would need to strip the black away first, either by using a color stripper (I'm not sure what the ingredients are in this, lol it might just be bleach? or peroxide or something) or bleaching your hair (both very damaging).
You said the sides and back of your hair is black, is that a virgin black? If so, virgin hair picks up box dye much, much easier than dyed black hair. I dye my black roots and previously dyed brown hair with the same box of dye, and you can't see a difference.
@Tidbitsx2
Like I said, dyed black hair is hard to deal with...you could dye your whole head with a dark brown dye, but just keep in mind your bleached parts will probably fade again after a while. If it's just the copper-tone that bothers you, you could try looking for a toner or dye over it using an "ash" shade to get rid of the brassiness.

WORTH IT?: - KIND OF... -it made my hair really dry.
Natural Hair type:
- course -thick hair
- straight
- medium to long hair
Hair History: -
-Dyed _3__ times
1. Virgin Black to Dark brown with lots of blonde highlights

2. Dyed fully to orange brown

3. Dyed back to black
-Natural
Bleach?: - yes-- when I bleached my hair from dark brown to orange brown my Hair dresser said I might have lots of hair falling out-- but i still went through with it and my hair was still pretty healthy, so when you have thicker hair its safer to bleach more.
Hair Dye: first two was done at salon. Dying hair black --Garnier Nutrisse
Price: - Salon First time:$150 Second time:$200 Myself: $20
Changes:
- Damage? So dry, stiff and not soft at all. However when my hair was Light Carmel Brown my hair was soft and nice then when I dyed it black myself it became dry, stiff and stuff.
- Texture change?rough
Comments:
When I dyed my hair black, the black dye kept coming off for 3 washes, and it slowly faded to dark brown.
So when I dyed my hair black black it became an unnatural black and then slowly faded into a dark version of what my hair color use to be.
About dying on top of dye, u should go to a salon if you dyed your hair dark and want to go lighter because the dark dyed color will always come through and must be stripped off in order to be dyed lighter.
If you want to go darker it usually works out fine, but it usually doesn't come out as the color you want it to be.

INTENSE AUBURN over partially dyed black hair?
about 10 months ago i bleached my hair completely blonde. i have naturally dark brown hair thats thick & very curly i've always had blonde highlights, but once i bleached it all, it went to wavy, normal in thickness (thin to me) and very damaged. i sported the blonde for almost 3 months and when i had about 1 and a half inches of roots i dyed it dark brown. that faded and some of my blonde started to come through with a greenish tint. i dyed it soft black, this fixed it and made my hair all dark brown after a couple of washes. i havent touched my hair in 5 months, now i have about 3 inches of my natural root and i wanted to go deep burgandy so 2 weeks ago i bought the shade in revlon. it gave me a reddish brown to my roots, and no change to what had been dyed. i heard about color oops so today i put it all over my hair and took a lot of the black out and made my hair brown & dark brown with some red hues in it and even gave me my curly texture back! interesting huh? also today i bought 2 boxes of garnier 100% color in intense auburn. it turned my roots exactly the shade i wanted, similar to bright auburn brown in garnier 100% color. still the part of my hair that had been dyed before came out a very dark brown that only looks reddish in the light. my last attemp: i just went and bought garnier nutrisse the regular dye in true red (not the 100%, they dont have the shade i think i need in that line), tomorrow i'm going to put it on the part of my hair that was dyed the soft black, and leave the 3 inches of root alone.

Wow, bleached 3 times??? How is your hair condition now?
Because I'm thinking of bleaching mine but my friend (who is studying to be a hairdresser) is advising me not to because the texture of my hair will dramatically change.
Mm, well the texture DID change and become straw dryishy feeling but i condition it a lot and take care of it so it really isnt a big deal to me, mine feels fine and not so breakable like everyone else exclaims it would be, but that might just be me since everyone's different. Also, i dont think it would really be that necessary to bleach it 3 times like i did, because at first i bleached it 2 times to become light blond but it sort of had some brassyness in it, so when it came to root-touchups i went ahead and bleached the entire bang all together again, so now my hair's like...a gradation from light-yellow-blond (roots) to extra-light-blond/white at the middle/ends.i think if you really wanna bleach it, maybe keep in mind you might be spending quite a bit more to keep it moisturised and not looking like you just fried :x
Btw, also i straighten/blow dry my hair on a daily morning basis. i rarely do hot oil treatments or deep conditioning, but i do use my dearly loved ISO hydra conditioner daily, which also helped my bangs not feel so much like crap

After i shower in the morning prior to blowdrying, i also thoroughly spray my hair with the chi 44 iron guard and my bangs with the it's a 10 miracle shine spray. When i use heat irons, i use quality heat protection sprays from brands such as rusk and its a 10 (miracle shine spray's like pure love). Eek, i have a hair product addiction >.< So in simple terms, i basicly prep it for heat abuse TT^TT

Well...it's always going to be a contrast thing, so since black is the darkest you can go, it'll always make your face look the lightest. It's like all those optical illusions you see:

Square B looks lighter than Square A only because it's surrounded by darker squares, whereas Square A is surrounded by lighter squares...two are exactly the same.
So you'll probably always appear lightest with the darkest hair.

Can someone pleeeaaase help me?
I went to get my hair colored (they stripped the black hair dye then dyed over it) like this
But they made it a very bright orange-red. It's actually very cute, and pretty in dimmer lighting, but I'm a student not some pop idol who can actually pull off such a flashy color. Can I just dye over it with a box dye that shows a picture of the color I want?
You will dry out your hair a lot by dyeing it again so soon. If you really hate the color, you can probably dye over it (it will be drying thought!), but make sure you choose one that has blue tones or says ASH with the color name. If you think about the color wheel, the color that complements (or cancels out) orange is what? blue. Ash has cool blue tones. My hair was dyed an orangey brown before and that wasn't what I wanted. I had a lady from the salon dye my hair a light ASH brown and now the orange tint is gone!

Dyed my hair 1-2 months ago cause I was getting tired of my black hair haha
It's the first time I went this light...does it look okay?

I love the color! It goes well with your skintone too because you're light. You may want to lighten or color your brows with brown brow powder to match your light hair. I have a similar color and I lightened my brows so it would look natural. I think your black brows look too harsh against your new color and that may be why your friends may not like it. You don't want your brow hair and head hair to match but if one's brown, the other should be brown too.

EMERGENCY!
Ok guys, I just about had enough now.. a while ago I dyed my hair jet black and it got lightened by the sun, so it turned a bit brown, that's when I decided to dye it light brown again with 'Prettia bubble hair dye' in marshmallow brown. The problems is, I still has some dark pigments of dye in my hair but my natural hair was growing from the roots..
so when I dyed it, the colour was soooo light on top [kind of light brown] and the rest was dark and it looked uneven. I has another box so I decided to try my luck and dyed it again but this time I wrapped foil arounf my head..
and BAM i went orange and so bright near the roots and the rest stayed dark..
what do I dooooo? I wanted to have ashy brown hair for so long or chocolate brown but it NEVER works....how should I get rid of the gingery/orange? pls help meeee
Before I went to an english salon and the woman turned my hair bright orange, that's the reason I dyed it jet black..
I really want an even smooth brown color all over...
what do I do?

i read that the ends of freshly cut hair soaks up more color than the rest of hair....so how long are we supposed to wait after a haircut/trim before coloring?
