Hi guys, I have a newbie question. I dyed my hair dark brown in China this summer and now my black roots are growing back out, I'm not sure what colour I should get to do a root touch-up, and I'm getting bored of my current hair colour and would like to dye my hair to a lighter brown. Something like this:

I'm thinking of redying during my break in December, but will my roots be a different colour than the rest of my hair? Thanks!!
Reddragon2
WORTH IT?: - YES!
Natural Hair type: Medium thickness, wavy.
Hair History: it was virgin dyed up until this time last year.
Hair color Before: a strawberry blondy colour
Hair color After: Red with blonde/orange streaks.
Bleach?: no
Hair Dye: Wella brand, not sure of the shade..magnum foils. Again not sure of the shade.
Price: I'm not sure about on it's own cos I get it cut at the same time.
Changes: It's grown a lot longer. I've also gone from side fringe to straight in the time
Description: - The colour and foils were both in for 20 mins.
Comments: I love my hair now lol

Here's my hair natural

The first time I got red WITH the streaks

It's current dye

After a couple of washed the red from the toner was gone and my hair was light brown/caramel/dirty blonde

AFTER: semi permanent red toner gone

you are sooo pretty! and all of those colors look really good on you! but I'm soo in love with the color you got after the red toner was washed out, even though you weren't a big fan of it lol. I'm definitely gonna show the stylist that picture when I get my hair colored wink.gif
woahcrlo
WORTH IT?: yes. for how cheap it is, it works really well.
Natural Hair type: thick, wavy straight.
Hair History: got my hair colored by a professional twice before in a golden brown.
Hair color Before:

Hair color After:

i cut my hair biggrin.gif
Bleach?: no.
Hair Dye: Revlon Colorsilk Soft Black #11

Price: $3.99 without tax
Changes: felt softer after i used the conditioner with it, so yeah. when they say they leave the hair healthier than before they're not lying.
Description: followed instructions, used a wide shower comb to brush it through my hair, and this like other paint-brush looking thing to put it in my hair. after it was all applied, i put on a shower cap and waited about 20 minutes. then, washed it out like how i'd shower, then used the conditioner that came with it. towel dry and styled it.
Comments: - some people complain that there's not enough in one box, but i had like more than two thirds left in the bottle, so i gave the rest to my mama cos she wanted to color her hair too aha. after she was done there was like half of the bottle left. idk, unless you have really long or thick hair, you don't need two boxes. i really like the result though. first time i colored my hair at home by myself, so yeah. its black. don't think "soft black" is more subtle than any other natural black, its BLACK BLACK. not blue black though, if you want that get the deeper black they have.

okay so i've dyed my hair a whole bunch of times
i've done all diff shades of brown ranging from dark to really really light, red, blue black, purple, highlights and so on
my hair's never had a problem with the color showing but recently, no matter how many times i dye it
it BARELY shows up!
a couple of months ago, i bleached my hair and then i went back to black but my hair started turning purple
for some reason, so i dyed it black again, and then after that i decided i wanted to go bakc to my
light brown color. so i got palty milk tea dye and it barely showed up, but i was expecting that cuz
it was dyed on top of BLACK BLACK hair. then i used an american brand, i forgot which, and again it didn't really show..
so a few weeks later i tried the garnier nutrisse dye with LIGHTENING COLOR CREAM for black hair! and again it didnt show. so a few weeks later i tried like a honey golden brown, i think revlon? and it DIDNT SHOW AGAIN! but the weird thing is, it comes up on my roots and thats IT. so a lot of ppl have been asking me if the light brown was my natural
hair color -___-
i relaly dont' want to bleach it again, cuz frankly im kind of afraid. i didn't mess up last time, but it still scares me
sooooo what shoudl i doo?!?! just keep dying it?!
and please dont tell me to stop killing my hair because honestly my hair is not damaged.
like i've seriously had ppl ask me what brand of hsampoo i use cuz its so soft and shiny and
nobody believes me when i tell them how many times ive dyed it.

thanks!

that happened to me as well then later on I found out once you dye your hair black it stains your hair you can't dye it black then go back to light brown unless you bleach your whole hair again then dye it light brown/ brown
that why your root turn out brown because that your natural regrowth hair but the bottom part doesn't turn out because that where you dye it black

sorry if my explaining is confusing
but I asked the hair dresser and that what they told me when I went to get my hair dyed light brown but I told them I didn't want to bleach my hair but she said I have to bleach due to the black dye I already have in my hair cause black dye stains your hair

hope this helps

Ethnicity: Half-Japanese/German
Natural hair color: Black as your soul LOL
Dyed to: Medium brown
Texture: Super thick & coarse, wavy and almost curly (I hate it.)
Would I do it again? Sure. Whatever, it's just hair.

My hair is so thick that I actually left the bleach in for 2 hours to get the result below. After that I toned it with a blue-based toner to get the red out.

BEFORE, natural black hair:

AFTER, medium brown

Not to cut your post short, but you should probably lay off of dying your hair for a bit.
I suggest you either strip the color, or go to a salon to do it. There are some drugstore haircolor removers (Loreal color zap, etc).
I've dyed my hair black before, and after about 6 months I dyed it brown, no problems. But if that's too long of a wait, your only options are remove the hair color or bleach

How damaging is it for brown hair (korean/asian) to go blonde like Xiaxue (the blogger girl) ?
Does it make hair roughers and fall out?

Question: If I want to dye and highlight my hair do I dye my whole head first then wait a few days before highlighting it or do I do both at the same time?

Anybody have any idea what colour is this ? Or if any hair dyes can achieve this colour? Thanks a million biggrin.gif

^ I had black hair and just dyed it with blond hair dye and it came out that color laugh.gif but I'm not sure if it works on everyone's hair though. My friend did the same thing as me and got a similar color. My other friend on the other hand would've just gone blond cause her hair is different.

and has anyone tried doing gradients in their hair? Like SHINee's Jonghyun. I'm planning to dye my hair again in January before school starts cause my brown has faded into a darker brown and my roots are all black and ugly sleep.gif

I can't pick between which color I should dye my hair. I can't choose between blond & brown gradient or black with purple & red highlights. (curse you SHINee hair inspirations)
LDY_GOOK
hey everyoneee

so here's my question, my hair is originally black.

then i bleached and dyed the tips and a section of my hair purple but it faded to like a pink/orangey color lol

and then i dyed it dark ash brown so now its just overall black except i was hoping that the black part of my hair would turn lighter and the bleached parts of my hair did in fact end up turning the brown, but the part of my hair that hadn't been affected just got a lot darker....lol [sorry no picture]

my problem now is that i'm wondering if i dyed my hair a very noticeable light brown color, like Kara's Nicole brown, would my hair take the color since I didn't dye it black overall but instead a brown color?
d o l c e vita
I have a question...
Well, my hair was dark brown a couple years ago, and I would always dye it on and off to dark black and stuff..
But this past summer I dyed it professionally to light brown/blondish.. and I REALLY liked it..
but right now, my roots are growing out.. and I REALLY want to keep it light again but I'm not sure what to do.
I don't want to go back and get it professionally done again cause it was way too expensive.
Do you guys recommend any root hair dyes??? I've heard of paltry dye but I'm still not sure which one I should use.

Help please <3

I also have a question I'm not sure anyone can answer...so I've been all over this thread and the Palty thread, since I want my hair lighter than it is right now (a lot of the colors that SNSD were sporting during the Genie promotion were really nice).

I've heard different things about Japanese (or other Asian) hair dyes versus American...how since something like Palty is specifically formulated for Asian hair, it works better. I'm just a bit puzzled because when I go to get my hair done in China, the most expensive dye options they have are always American brands (I couldn't read any, but my mom said they had L'Oreal). They always do a fantastic job with my hair. Is it possible that the dye formulation is different? It seems unlikely to me, but it also seems a lot of people have much more success with brands like Palty. I need to know whether I really need to try to get some Palty, or if I can get decent results with L'Oreal or Revlon or something. As far as I know, I haven't seen any in the Asian stores here, I'd probably have to go up to Philly to look for it (like an hour away) or order it online...but my hair is longer and I'd probably need 2 boxes, and I really don't want to be spending $30 to dye my hair at home myself.

So yeah...I need to figure this out, I want my hair dyed by the holidays tongue.gif

i personally havent dyed my hair from virgin hair to blonde
but my friend has and yea its pretty damaging but not as horrible as any other color.
she didnt use bleach tho. she just kept dying it constantly with blonde hair dye till she got the shade she wanted.
the hair would be pretty coarse but when styled with like a straight iron its smooth? XD losing hair for her is on average, just the usual loss of hair everyday. oh she's vietnamese and had virgin dark brown hair.

for me i did virgin hair to a bright red. took a couple of boxes didnt use bleach.

would this shade be considered auburn? is it possible to achieve this color without bleaching? (it's very likely that the picture has been altered because it's really unique. haven't found anything like it >_____<)

Here is the low-down.
There's no such thing as "Asian hair", "Caucasian hair", however Asian have a higher concentration of melanin (Black pigments) that makes your hair colour black. Please note Caucasian can have naturally black hair as well. Hair is hair, and not dependent to your race, but more so on your genetic makeup. About the dye, there is two part; the dye (color) and hydrogen peroxide. The hydogren peroxide soften up your hair, breaking up the bonds, while the hydrogen peroxide penetrate your hair, the dye itself will replace the color pigment, in this case for asian (melanine). By increasing the concentration of hydrogen peroxide the color will diffuse in easier, and this is what professionals use. The kit you buy have a lower concentration, just enough to replace the pigments. For the majority of white people they don't need alot, but when it comes to asians...we do need alot, hence why some product fails to work. In a Salon, they MAY use the dye, but more than often they have their OWN mixture of hydrogen peroxide. I assume palty would have a higher concentration of h2o2, and is more damaging to your scalp when compare to american brands.

Here's my story! I really wanted to dye my hair blonde for the longest time, but I didn't want to get it done professionally. So I opted for drugstore hairdye which was an obvious fail because my hair was pretty much black before. I used two boxes one night because I am an impatient person, which is not a good idea. I used a dark brown color, in a brand whose name I forgot. They have a shade called True Diamond or something in their line.. And on top of the dark brown I used the lightest blond color. And then I ended up with this brown/orange color I really like. It's been about three months now, you can see it growing out. I still want to go blonde, but I'm afraid of what will happen to my hair after it's been bleached, you know?

i wanna go darker, and i came across this picture of CD, and i really like her hair color.
does anyone know the kind of shade this is? or anything similar? thanks!

hi! first time posting here!

This is my before picture:

and here's my dyed hair =)

I dyed my hair purple cause I like the colour and I wanted to be a bit unique..everyone around me is either blond/platnium/red/brown/milk tea colour
a&k*

Natural hair color is shown in Jan08.. I just haven't stopped dyeing it ever since.

I basically bleach it once til it's blonde, then add semi-permanent color to it. After a few weeks when I get bored of the same color or it fades into a very nasty shade, I either bleach it again to take the color out and lighten up the blonde or dye the faded color over with another color. Doing the second option yields exciting results lol.. I never know what the color will turn out to be XD But they haven't been bad at all. Fun fun fun!!

am i the only who dyed her hair from black to black ? this seems stupid but with the sun on my hair had brown highlights just like ...my dog ! dry.gif so i decided to go for a "blue-black" (don't know how to traduce noir bleuté in english sorry) ... and i like it so much !!! (but ii'll fade in 6-8 weeks)

I was wondering what product will gimme this color?

Taken from a youtube vid.

I have virgin black hair and I heard from that youtube vid that if we have black hair, it is better to use a lighter shade (like blonde) to achieve that effect. But I am not sure and afraid if it goes wrong =T So please, any recommendations or comments? thanks in advanced.

What a coincidence, I just finished watching the same video. LOL.
So the girl says that she uses "Goldwell Topchic Hair Color 9NA - Very light natural ash blonde".
You can probably get that online or at some kind of beauty store.
She mixed the dye with a 12% creme peroxide so the color shows up on darker hair/roots.
You can't really lighten hair with just dye unless it has some sort of bleach or lightening agent in it.
By using some sort of ashy hair dye, it cancels out the orange/coppery tones asians get when their hair is lightened from their natural color.

If you don't want to go through the trouble of all that, you could try Palty hair dye which already has some bleach in the dye so the color actually shows up a bit. But since you have virgin black hair, it might not turn out that light automatically so it might take a few run throughs to get the color you want.

1. What brand is good? ( I have a shoppers near me and possibly pacific mall for 'asian' brands)
2. I have black hair, and I wanted to go brown but what shade do I start at?
3. Can I continue to go lighter shades from that point?

If you don't want to bleach, you'd definitely have to take it in steps. I think you could get it with enough applications, with dye you don't really want to go more than 2-3 shades lighter each time. It looks like a cool/ash color, don't take my word for it but I think you might be able to get it using dark, medium, light ash blond dyes.

I just used a medium natural blond from...Loreal Excellence Cream, I think. My hair still feels really nice and smooth and soft xD My hair was medium brown to begin, but I had like 2 inches of black new growth. I just applied to my roots first, then all over...came out a really nice reddish brown smile.gif Mostly even, a few dark sports but I think it makes it look more natural. smile.gif Like I said, if you want to avoid the red tones, use a cool or ash colored dye, it's supposed to reduce red/yellow. If you pick a warm color dye, you'll get a more orange color.

If you want to go slower, pick a light brown instead of blond. I wanted to go lighter than my medium brown from before, so I went with blond, but was scared to go too light, hence why I picked medium blond instead of light xD

And yes, you can go lighter from there. My last hairdresser told me that you can dye a lighter color over a dyed darker color, but it simply isn't true. Almost all box dyes that are lighter in color will have some kind of peroxide in them, so you can get lighter. You might want to be careful dying too much though, and my totally unprofessional opinion is that you might end up with something funky if you color too many times (since you probably won't strip every color each time you dye, so they'll keep layering, almost).

I just dyed my hair, I've been meaning to post pictures, but my haircut is fugly. xD maybe in a few days. But yeah, I did a ton of research before I did it and talked to a cosmetologist and everything (for box dye! laugh.gif) but that doesn't mean I'm 100% on everything...take what I say with a grain of salt. It's all based on my personal experience and what I managed to find online tongue.gif

I just dyed my hair last week and I'm VERY happy with the results! smile.gif My natural color hair is a dark to medium ash brown, golden brown toward the ends. Half my hair was virgin, the other half dyed about two to three times.

Hair Dye:Clairol Reddest Copper Red
Peroxide: 40 Vol
Color: 10/10
Damage: I REALLY wanted it to lift my hair, so I used a higher vol peroxide. I got the result I wanted, and the damage that comes with it. I've been putting the hair supplement packets in my hair since then and it's helped a lot.

I can't buy online =T so other suggestions are needed....thank youu though!

If you don't want to bleach, you'd definitely have to take it in steps. I think you could get it with enough applications, with dye you don't really want to go more than 2-3 shades lighter each time. It looks like a cool/ash color, don't take my word for it but I think you might be able to get it using dark, medium, light ash blond dyes

I am very new to dying my hair .. so I guess I will take your words for it ~ ^^ thank you!

Hey guys. I'm a guy and I have my hair bleached, its kinda like g-dragon and hongki's (from drama you're beautiful) hair. I need some advice/help on touching up my roots.

I got my hair bleached at a salon, and I don't want to go back to get touch ups since I am afterall, a poor college student lol. So i was just wondering what do I do to touch up my bleached hair by myself, without messing up the colors...like the roots being completely different color from the rest of my head. My hair has grown about 1cm so far and I need to touch up my roots soon. Like the spiral of my head is pretty much black and its lookin kinda funny haha. I'm planning on touching it up when I get back home this Wednesday, so any advice on touching up the roots without making my head a big mess would be much appreciated smile.gif

Edit:
Here's a picture of my hair when I got it bleached at the salon.

My hair is actually slightly darker than that, it was the lighting.
But now, cuz of the black roots, its even darker.

tbh that hair colour doesn't suit you at all lol

for roots, i usually just buy a box from the drug store to fix it up

lol blonde hair + dark eyebrows = funny look.

If you want to look good with frequent maintenance, you're probably gonna have to go to the salon to get proper touchup, or else it'll still look funny.

^ hmm it's kinda hair to match that color with bleaching once up to that color... perhaps you can buy a bleaching powder (Blue lightening I think works the best) and then get a Vol 40 developer, just put it on the roots for like what 30 mins. Also buy a toner (white one would work) to take the brassiness out (only put on the hair for like 5-10mins OR get blonde box dye that says ASH blonde (note ash will cancel out the brassiness...)

Don't expect just bleaching is going to achieve that hair color.

This is my hair with just bleaching (it looks orange because I dyed my hair fire engine red and I just let it fade ^__^but it was close to that color but more like BRIGHT yellow lol)

O wait this is a pic with my hair just bleached.... I know you can't see the hair cause it's tied up but it's better than no example LOL

How damaging is it for brown hair (korean/asian) to go blonde like Xiaxue (the blogger girl) ?
Does it make hair roughers and fall out?

sorry i have no clue who xiaxue is, but im sure she bleached her hair.
its very very very.... very damaging... @_@;

this was my hair color at one point, n took more than one bleach to get to that color. the hair quality was really really bad, so i had to cut it off n stopped dying my hair for a couple of years. BUT i started dying my hair again just recently.
my advice to you is that not to bleach your hair, its AWFUL!
n for us asians, its a bit hard to get our hair to blonde. >.<; so it has to be bleached more than once.
if you do dye your hair, make sure every time its about 2 - 3 month apart. hmm... other than that, use lots of moisturizer for your hair, cuz it tends to get really dry.

good luck! biggrin.gif

I went from black to light brown and it made me look paler instead.
