NOTE FROM MOD: This will be the official thread for hair dye questions/discussions. All things related to dying hair should be asked HERE. Any hair dye threads created separate from this topic will either be closed or merged.

Hey, loves! So I've noticed a lot of threads about hair dye and such. Everyone usually gives their two cents about dying their hair, but it's often hard for people to take the advice without visual aid. I want this to be a quick and easy thread to help people pick out hair colors and such (:

So I think you guys should post...

Hair History: -
Virgin/Dyed 2 times a year since.. the third grade? (so bad) and bleached about 2 times before, too
Natural
Hair color Before: dark brown/slightly black, with some light brown from previous bleachings
Hair color After: dark orange/reddish/brown
Bleach?: no
Hair Dye: ...okay I actually used 4 different boxes-- one was orange, fuschia, brown, red-- don't remember the brands though.
Price: forgot how much the boxes cost
Description: - I actually just randomly splattered a bunch of orange dye on my hair-- to find that I was running out. I tried to scrape some extra orange out to mix with red and fuschia, but I ran out of those colors, too, so I had to dig out a brown. In the end I mixed the three colors (and very few orange) together to create an immense orange/red color
Comments: I liked the result when I had JUST washed it-- it was really really bright, which is what I was aiming for, but there was some red-- which I didn't like. I'd suggest making sure I actually have enough hair dye before doing anything +_o and I don't like how it faded back to this dull brown/orange color sad.gif

(the blue is just extensions-- I didn't dye those D:)

(it looks like that now in real life, but I took the picture back when I recently dyed it)

no picture of what it faded into though
my roots are growing out too :[

I hope this helped.. in anyway
although I really doubt anyone would wanna brighten their head this much.
My mom banned me from dying my hair again (for another year) after she saw the result.. T_T

weird, eh?
Bleach?: No
Hair Dye: Garnier Nutrisse: Nourishing Color Creme
in 535 (Medium Golden Mahogany Brown)

Price: Around $7 at CVS.
Changes:
- My hair became a little more damaged
- The texture wasn't as smooth as before
- My hair looked more dull.
Description: I left the dye in for 25 minutes and then washed it out.

haha. It looks gross =x
Comments: I wish I had left it in for longer, and wrapped it in tin foil and blow dried it.
I also wish I used a lighter color because there was no way that this color would come out on my virgin black hair.
My friends say that it looks very nice and natural though. They said it softened my face a bit.

Hair color Before: asian black
Hair color After: my hair right now is like...brown? with black roots haha

Comments: - um i guess i didn't really do it right, as in this wasn't a one off thing haha
but yeh i dyed my hair a lot, i've tried brown/red/red-brown etc and last summer i bleached my hair then dyed it a sorta .. brown/blonde colour and then got it permed in hong kong. after summer i went to the salon and i wanted it dyed a cute orangey brown colour but it came out purpley colour [not going there again] but then i just started using head and shoulders shampoo which strips your hair colour so now its like a sorta light browny colour lol

pics!!! -->

ok ignore the summer 2007 one, i was real drunk
and yeh
thats not all the times i've coloured my hair but yeh, a few
you get the idea
i don't think i looked that bad as a blonde lol

ahh i feel like doing something drastic color-wise to my hair. i'll post pics if i do.
but mannn i wish i had pics from my past dyeing experiences haha. i remember in 7th grade i dyed my bangs like magenta. i was a spunky little 12 yr old back then. i tried a reddish color later for all my hair. and also attempted highlighting my hair by myself at home.. BAD IDEA. never made my hair too unhealthy.
hmm haven't dyed it in a while now and it is pretty much at my natural dark brown.

I once did, just because it was by accident-- dyed my eyebrows orange

which was pretty bad because that time I only dyed a small portion of my hair orange

so I suggest
do it if you're careful with your eyes
and you're doing a full head dye T_T

I never dye my eyebrows. I have light, almost non-existant eyebrows crazy.gif (due to over plucking lol). So I just fill it in with a different shade of pencil/powder to match my hair color. My hair color is always from black to light brown, so it usually looks pretty natural.

Yeah, I didn't dye my eyebrows when I dyed my hair. My hair isn't super noticably different so noone even notices.
I wouldn't sugguest doing it yourself though. It seems a bit scary. Leave to the professionals lol.

Hair color After:
1st time - Palty Maple chocolate

(Slight root regrowth here lol)
2nd time - Clairol Herbal Essense Ruby Red

3rd time - Sally Hansen Creme Hair bleach

(I know I know, SHOCKING! Lol it came out badly sleep.gif)
4th time - Clairol Nice And Easy Natural Medium Golden Brown

(With Flash it looks orangey O_o Without flash it looks brown)
Bleach?: - yes
Price: - $Dirt cheap lol
Changes:
- Damage? Very considering I dyed it so much and bleached it.
- Texture change? Before my hair was thick, kinda frizzy/dry naturally and heavy. Now it's dry, frizzy and thin. It's gotten a lot more fine then before too
Description: - I put the dye on then wrapped a plastic bag around my hair and sat by the heater for 40 minutes.
Comments: - I like the colours but I hate root regrowth. I don't recommend home-bleaching though, I had to bleach it twice because the 1st time came out so ginger because I had previous red dye in my hair.

(Haha such a long post. I'm planning on leaving my hair to grow back out now, as much as I hate root regrowth my hair is far too damaged as you can see from my last picture.)

(FYI: I don't dye my brows because my skin on my face is easily irritated by strong chemicals... I can't cover up a red rashy face lol)

I guess if you want to dye your hair to very light colours (eg. blonde), then you have to bleach it. I didn't bleach my hair when I dyed my hair for the first time. But I got comments that the new colour of my hair wasn't really obvious cos my natural hair was blackish brown. So yeah. I heard you have to bleach you hair if you want to dye it pink?
~Shelly~
^ When I dyed my hair from black to brown, I didn't bleach it. I did bleach it (as you can see in my earliar post) before I tried to get the lighter brown shade though. It just depends on the shade and intensity of colour you want.
ChouChou
you don't normally have to bleach it if ya want like a brown/reddish colour or whatever
her in the uk in the salons, if ya want it like brown/reddish then they say they have to bleach it
but in places like hk they never do and it always come out real light, even when you have virgin hair
i think they might use diff dye, like more stronger

i had to bleach my hair when i went blonde lol
but thats cuz its blonde lol

Bleach?:
-techinically speaking, i only used bleach. i did, however, continue to shampoo with a purple toner.

Hair Dye:

Price:
- $9?

mi hair didn't turn platinum blonde overnight. in order to not overprocess mi hair too quickly, i bleached in steps. if you do plan on bleaching your hair, know the stretch of colors your hair must go through in order to reach your desired color.

make sure the dye stays moist. also, i found that saram wrap helps and blowdrying [heat] speeds up the process.

i also suggest playing around with clip in extensions until you're happy with the color

I'll just show my most recent dye jobs...

I just wanted to dye my hair red over my previous hair colour:

But bleach was only used at the roots and I requested a darker, more cool red so the red turned out much less vibrant than I had anticipated:

So I got my hair dyed again but they bleached it first this time, and also told me they'd be adding streaks:

Looks pink, right? It's not just me T____T Haha but it gradually became more reddish rather than pink after a few washes. It was pretty vibrant red but I didn't like the streaks!! >__> it was too emo for my liking.
And then it faded into a more orange/brown colour which was ok but I still didn't like the streaks! Argh reminds me of the wooden desk in my room.

So yeah I'm definitely getting it dyed again, but NOT in streak form. I want an all-over red a shade darker than the really vibrant shade I got.

edit:
wow! The good old redheaded days. Haha it's October now and just found my old post from the front page o__O
I can't believe how different I look. I've dyed my hair black about 3x in the meantime. Current pictures in 411. Should I go back to red? Haha idk xD

I say it depends on whether or not you're concerned about the damage. Me personally, am scared of my hair getting waay damaged. So I would say grow them out. But if the color is really unsightly then maybe dying it isn't a miserable idea lol.

Yeah, the already dyed part will turn lighter. I say buy one of those touch-up kits they have in drug stores. They have a brush thing so that you can color only your roots.

I've dyed my hair so many times I can't find any pictures of my natural color. mellow.gif I started dying it dark brown in 10th grade and haven't gone back. There are some pictures of me with black hair...but that was dyed, too--my natural color is lighter than that.

Comments: - " I liked the end result, but I would sugguest... " - Hair is fun for me. I like changing things and hate the idea of having the same hair color or style for years and years.

The current style is the big one on top. These are from the last year and a half in Korea.

Comments: - i liked it ;] but the problem is the hair dye bleached my hair and after a month of everyday washing the mocha colour is fading and leaving me with a more noticable clear brown. i wouldnt mind that, but the thing is my school doesnt allow ppl to dye their hair *yea it sucks* so with the more obvious brown, i might get caught soon. wish me luck <3

WORTH IT?: - yes, definitely
Natural Hair type:
kind of long, straight asian hair but pretty coarse in texture especially if not straightened

Hair History: -
virgin black hair before

Hair color Before:
Just imagine virgin black hair. tongue.gif

Hair color After:

^ Bleaching/hair dyeing progression as I did the underside of my bangs

Bleach?:
Yes yes yes of course! Bleached 3 times with 40 volume. It kills your hair, but you absolutely cannot get a vibrant color from asian black hair without bleaching a few times.

Hair Dye: Prism Lites or Quick Blue + regular cream developer from Sally's. RAW True Blue and Manic Panic Aftermidnight Blue.
Price: - Dyed it all myself, so it was just the cost materials. About $20
Changes: Hair is damaged and brittle after bleaching as expected, but it's nothing a few good protein treatments and deep conditioning won't (mostly) ameliorate.
Description: - Foiled highlights with bleach 3 times, 30-45 minutes each while applying heat. Left in blue hair dye for 2-3 hours with heat.
Comments: I've maintained blue hair for over a year, I think dyeing fun vibrant colors in hair properly is a pretty difficult process for most people to try to do themselves but it's incredibly rewarding if you just take the time to do your research and try to do it right.

I have a question: I have dyed hair but my roots are growing out. if i dye my hair by myself, will it turn 2 different colors? coz someone told me if u dyed ur hair by urself with black roots growing out the already dyed part will be lighter than the roots. does that make sense?

Unfortunately, yes, it will turn out 2 different colors...I know from personal experience.
If you're set on doing it by yourself, I'd recommend first putting the dye on your already-dyed hair, waiting, then placing it on your roots, but in order to get a good estimate of how long you should wait, you should probably test it out on a few strands or so (but I never do this b/c I'm incredibly lazy and impatient). It's a hassle for sure, but if you don't want to look like a dye-job gone wrong or shell out tons of $ at the salon, it's all you can do :/

=O I think she pulls the blonde off very well.
