AN 11-year-old Sunshine Coast boy yesterday helped his mum deliver twins three months premature.

Schoolboy Rohan Townsend, guided only by the voice of a paramedic on the telephone, helped bring his 800 gram baby brother, Ashton, into the world.

His mother, Amanda Sullivan, began having contractions at the family’s Bli Bli home about 6am yesterday.

Rohan’s baby sister Indi was delivered at Nambour General Hospital by caesarean a short time later.

She tipped the scales at 700 grams.

By that time Rohan had already headed off to school.

Ashton and Indi were sent to the Royal Brisbane Hospital about 3pm yesterday.

Both babies were listed in a stable condition last night, a spokeswoman said.

Amanda remained in Nambour hospital last night but was expected to be taken to Brisbane to join her babies soon.

Amanda’s mother Christine, who arrived on the Coast on a late afternoon flight yesterday from Melbourne, said if the premature twins were anything like their big brother, their battle was already won.

“I got a phone call early this morning and I heard this scream in the background and Rohan on the phone saying, ‘I delivered the baby’,” Christine said.

Thirty-two-year-old Amanda went into labour at home with Rohan and her other son, Christian, 8.

Christine said Ashton was born still in his protective “sack” and that it was Rohan, as directed by paramedics, who cut the sack open in a delicate operation.

Christian watched on quietly.

“He was then told to keep the baby warm while the paramedics arrived,” Christine said.

“He’s a remarkable young boy, always caring and generous, and he idolises his mother.”

Christine said her grandson had gone off to school and was being looked after by his father.

“The teachers and everyone are keeping a bit of an eye on him and Christian, who was a little quiet,” she said.

She said she spoke to her daughter late yesterday afternoon, who was still “quite groggy”.

“The pregnancy was quite uneventful except she started going into labour last week and had to go to Brisbane,” Christine said.

“They were able to stop it then and she was able to go home.”

Christine, who was visibly shaken and anxious to see her daughter, said she hoped to join Amanda at the Royal Brisbane Hospital today.

What an amazing 11 year old boy , one that his mum and dad are obviously so proud. You deserve an award for that one.
You are sure to be the best brother in the whole world knowing that you delivered your baby brother in to this world with just the help of the parademedics is beyond belief. This boy has been brought up the right way when so many kids of that age are going off the edge.

Rohan you should be so very proud of yourself - what a fantastic job you have done!! And yes I agree with 'struggle', you should receive an award!

And lets not forget to give Christian a big pat on the back, I can only imagine how distressing it would have been for him while he 'watched quietly'' - good job Christian for not panicking and complicating an already unreal situation - you too should be proud of how you handled yourself!

WOW!! Well done! Most adults freak out when a woman goes into labour, you handled it amazingly well. I know you may not be considering career options at this stage in your life, but when you do, don't rule out midwifery! You already have prior experience as well. Congratulations and well done.

Never send a boy to do a man's job - unless it's Rohan Townsend. Good job, mate.

It's something you never forget and which nothing else can replace - bringing a new life into this world.

I delivered my own daughter into this world in a home birth - and, as you go along in life, Rohan, you will realise that nothing, but nothing compares to the importance, depth and profound meaning of what you have just experience - being the first to gaze into those brand new eyes, to cut the cord and to hold that tiny life in the palm of your hand.

The only thing that has ever come close, for me, is to comfort a dying person - and I've done my fair share of that too. Just like helping at a birth, it is the greatest of privileges.

All the best, bigfella. And if you ever get the chance, there's someone you might like to meet -
