Management Initiatives
Management initiatives -- from the DMTF, as well as other industry organizations -- are built upon DMTF technologies. These initiatives, which deliver functionality to specific vertical applications and industries, include important implementations such as the DMTF's Common Diagnostic Model (CDM), Desktop and mobile Architecture for System Hardware (DASH) and Systems Management Architecture for Server Hardware (SMASH) Initiatives, and the Storage Networking Industry Association’s (SNIA's) Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S).
CDM
As an extension of the DMTF’s Common Information Model (CIM), the CDM specification is widely used within the industry to evaluate the health of computer systems in multi-vendor environments. The CDM Initiative creates diagnostic instrumentation that can be utilized by platform management applications, and its tight synergy with the other manageability domains in CIM further enables integration of diagnostics into critical management functions.
DASH
The DMTF’s Desktop and Mobile Architecture for System Hardware (DASH) Initiative is a suite of specifications that takes full advantage of the DMTF’s Web Services for Management (WS-Management) specification – delivering standards-based Web services management for desktop and mobile client systems. Through the DASH Initiative, the DMTF provides the next generation of standards for secure out-of-band and remote management of desktop and mobile systems.
SMASH
The DMTF's SMASH Initiative, which includes the Server Management Command Line Protocol & WS-Management, is a suite of specifications that deliver architectural semantics, industry standard protocols and profiles to unify the management of the data center.
SMI-S
The Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) is developed by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) to standardize interoperable storage management technologies, based on the rich foundation provided by the DMTF’s CIM and WBEM. For more information, visit the SNIA’s SMI-S Web page.
VMAN
The Virtualization Management Initiative (VMAN) delivers broadly supported interoperability and portability standards to managing the virtual computing lifecycle. VMAN’s OVF (Open Virtualization Format) specification provides a common format to package and securely distribute virtual appliances across multiple virtualization platforms. VMAN Profiles define a consistent way of managing a heterogeneous virtualized environment.
