Magic lighting effect in photoshopListThumbs

Magic lighting effect in photoshop

March 28, 2007

Since my last article on how to create smoke generated lots of traffic, I decided to write another one on some of the photoshop effects. Although I use Photoshop on a daily basis, I am by no means a photoshop expert.

Well what I want to show here is how to create a nice light and magic effect.

1 - Create a radial gradient, in this case from a purple to a really dark purple

2 - Here I added a really cool Icon of a magic hat from the Crystal Clear Collection by Everaldo

3 - Add some text, I used the source code of a site to get the text and apply the Distort >Wave filter

Create two stripes of text

4 - Rotate and place the text

5 - Add some light using glow : Use different values for each line of text, the secret here is the blending option COLOR DODGE..

Change the values of Spread, Size and Range

6 - Group the 2 lines of texts and with one apply a mask to make the stripes disappear at their ends.

7 - With the other group of text apply a gaussian blur, after that delete some parts to show the non-blury text.

This will add a movement feel to the text, like they are really being magically created.

8 - Create a new layer below the text and with a regular big brush like 100px add a spot of light in white.

The layer must be below the text, otherwise the glow will not affect the white spot

9 - Make some smoke again, I used the eraser, I could've used the liquify as well

10 - Create a cloud: to do that make use a marquee with feather set to a value bigger than 20 and apply the render>clouds holding the command key(mac), ctrl key(win).

The same as the previous post, and the most important thing apply the COLOR DODGE blending options on it

11 - Sparks: For the sparks create a brush, play with the shape dynamics, scattering, and other dynamics. After that, apply a Outer Glow and Inner Glow to create the magic effect.

End - The result is really simple but at the same time it looks beautiful.

The whole process took me about 35 minutes, one thing I think is really cool is to apply the color dodge blending option to folder, and put blurred elements inside of it. Using it you can create some really amazing light effects.

The PSD files can be downloaded.

Sorry...the tutorial doesn't work for me and I dun think it will be handy for us amateurs...i really hope that you would explain more in depth. I know for some reasons those who are good in photoshop would rather teach the intermediate users instead of explaining one by one. I just hope that you would take the time to help amateurs by giving us a more detailed tutorial instead. If not, then it is okay then. Thanks again.

How to apply wave filter to test.
I'm a PS newbie but with a little research on the web I've found out that text is a vector and you have to change it to a normal layer to apply the the wave filter you must first rasterise the text layer first. Also make sure that you are working in 8 bits/channel

1. goto layer > rasterize > type

Anonymous11/14/2008

This tutorial blows be more descriptive when you do something like this again because it just confused me

Water Damage11/09/2008

My girlfriend is an artist, she ran across this post and almot duplicated what you did in a short amount of time (about 4 hours) . I guess once an artist see's it done the first time, it is easy for them, like a real guitarist, once they see it, they can play it.

Great site, now I may get some great art for one of my sites, thanks.

Hi.. im Leo.. im a GRAPHIC DESIGNER wanna be...hehehe.. i appreciate that magic lighting effect.. it gives me idea and knowledge..i hope you can send me some of your tutorials.....thanks thanks thanks....

Colchones11/03/2008

I agree with most commenters that this is an awful tutorial. Yes the effect is nice, but if your going to write a tutorial, you need to write it for a total noob. An experienced photoshop person can do this regardless and is no use to them, so leaving out the important stuff helps no one.
And please, get someone to proof read your writing, your english is HORRIBLE and far from understandable

The only problem is that the tutorial is too difficult to understand. There is no explanation whatsoever in any steps so this makes it quite hard for people to follow

It's good, shows simple things can still be effective.... and i'm not a competant photoshop user.... but i have initiative and was able to figure out his steps...

For the guy moaning about text.... he clearly states

3 - Add some text, I used the source code of a site to get the text and apply the Distort >Wave filter

Create two stripes of text

4 - Rotate and place the text << have them flipped one over another. so they zig zag across each other....

Fielding05/06/2008

I...couldn't follow this. How did you rotate the text? I was trying to figure it out through the transform tool and I couldn't get the same effect. Since I couldn't figure that out, I just left it as is and tried adding the glow, and that also came out to be unsuccessful. I'm not even that new to photoshop but still need some sort of guidance. This has potential to be a very useful and great tutorial yeah, I think writing for an audience that are new to photoshop, explaining thoroughly might give out better results with people trying to attempt it.

It's a shame I really wanted to apply this to a project but now I have no clue on how to go about it =/.

Syzygy05/04/2008

I agree with most commenters that this is an awful tutorial. Yes the effect is nice, but if your going to write a tutorial, you need to write it for a total noob. An experienced photoshop person can do this regardless and is no use to them, so leaving out the important stuff helps no one.

but thanks a lot bro.

KCJen01/31/2008

I too was worried at first that the instructions seemed to skip a step or two, however, once i got going on it, i was able to figure it out and WOW, i made an amazing picture and just this little tutorial gives me so many good ideas.

thanks!

Roxanne01/25/2008

Such a cool effect, thanks for the tut.

For those wondering what he meant by the Mask layer and the tops "stripes" (really text) dissappearing, when you "group" the two text layers, you will add a mask to the ONE GROUPED LAYER and then with the gradient tool (you can use white and black, default colors) and work it as if you were about to create a gradient...because of the mask, it will "disappear", making it seem as if the text is slowly fading. If you do not want to do all of that, you can always erase it with a soft round brush and put the opacity around 50% or the like. Good luck!

tomcat01/21/2008

wonderfull tutorial!!! and a great effect! some paces were difficult to understand! but at least made me think more than following blindly with mouse clicks!! again awesome effect! thank you for the tutorial!

Miguel Araujo01/17/2008

I really enjoy the "idea" Effect is AWESOME, although I gotta also say that for a noob like me it's almost a " Mission not Acomplished".
Step by Step tutorials are need to inexperient users, I think that's what some people here try to say. Unfortunatelly they express it in insults and bad words.

NICE JOB but please take in mind that step by step procedures would be a lot more usefull :)

I would donate ... if it was a step by step one.
Greets.

yomna01/15/2008

RonPhil09/23/2007

This looks nice.. But I could not follow it...you did not explain it well.. I hope you will repost this tutorial with details..

Thank you

Swa09/12/2007

If you're not going to explain each step to us, which is fine, you could at least show us what is going on with your "layers" palette on-screen as this at least would give the not so experienced PS users at least SOME idea what's going on. I'm really disappointed cos i really wanted to use this effect and i simply cant.

Anonymous09/10/2007

good tutorial, people with problems may wanna start with something a little easier - the features described are pretty basic

Connor Adams08/19/2007

Wow, great effect there! huge help, thanks!

Mora.B08/19/2007

I really love this tutorial I just wish u were a lil bit clear. Thanks a million. I'm still learning

GH05708/18/2007

How the heck was anyone else able to follow this? I mean, the author needs to remember that people reading tuts in the first place need a bit more explanation than what was given.

For example....

"Group the 2 lines of texts and with one apply a mask to make the stripes disappear at their ends."

With one what? And what type of mask...I know of a couple in PS. And as I thought I made text columns not "stripes".

And another...

"Create a cloud: to do that make use a marquee with feather set to a value bigger than 20..."

That's not even proper english, coupled with broken instructions, this was meant to only be completed by people who don't need to read tuts in the first place anymore.

I did learn something from this though...how to fail.

Anonymous08/17/2007

Worked fine for me. Absolutely beautiful effect. Will definitely put this in my artistic arsenal.

There were a few steps that were left without explanation, but if you already know how to use Photoshop, with a little common sense, you can fill in the blanks. I was never left completely stumped. Besides, going through every single agonizing mouse-click would have been way too long and hard to read.

Anonymous08/13/2007

Your instructions are impossible to follow.

The Piranha08/11/2007

Great effect and tutorial,i had some problems but if u work at it u solve them and learn more from the expierence to all the people that think this tut is bad please dont post again because ur probebly not that good at photoshop to begin with

Anonymous08/05/2007

HOW CAN I MAKE THEM DISAPPEAR ENDS BY A MASK!!! I DID NOT UNDERSTAND!

joseph08/04/2007

i wont even bother showing you my failed attempt.

PhotoShop User06/30/2007

Thanks so much for sharing this! You've shown me an amazing technique that I will definitely use, and perhaps even try out for my own book cover!

KAMLOTTON06/19/2007

Grate effect.. bat tutorial not so good :/ i had problems with few points... nach, but i "discover" some useful effects :]

Anonymous06/19/2007

The result is awesome but I think that the tutorial was mediocre.

Kashi Designs06/14/2007

Marvelous. Found it hard to emulate the results, as i am using photoshop 4! As a small company, we currently lack the backing for more up to date software, and the sections in other tutorials which require illustrator are very hard! This tutorial is excellent though, and i find that a similarly good effect can be achieved with Luminosity, as opposed to colour dodge, on the text layer.

Thanks very much, and keep up the good work!

GencerBilgisayar06/12/2007

very good effect
u re magical

Anonymous06/02/2007

bad tutorial.
amazing trick.

Anonymous06/01/2007

hi! i like this tutorial a lot! really nice, but i have a question, and i dont know if u can help of anybody, but here's the thing, I was in some tutorial and in it, there was this web page where u can download differents packs with brushes and so on, so i download them, but i dont know how to use them... i dont see where i can look for them in my photoshop, do u have any clue?
pliz answer to my email, thanks a lot

Vik05/16/2007

Awesome!

Alex Mos05/12/2007

Very interesting tutorial... I was wondering how those effects are made :)

klein04/27/2007

wow! what a very nice tutorial! now im very eager to apply that tricks to my website http://www.designersyard.com

Anonymous04/26/2007

People who say they can't follow this tutorial are too used to being force fed steps. I'll admit that I'm a fairly advanced PS user, and yes, this tutorial did challenge me. However, due to the challenge I was able to learn more from this tutorial than I've learned in months.

Keep posting, man!

Ramon Bispo04/26/2007

Great!!!!!

Thanks so much!

Anonymous04/26/2007

It's hard to follow your instructions...

Anonymous04/24/2007

I found this really hard to follow even though Ive been around the photoshops quite a bit. Its a really interesting effect which I'd like to know more about though

Sharon04/23/2007

Great tip, thanks for sharing.

I'm well versed in Illustrator but still a novice in Photoshop, so your tutorials are a welcome challenge/lesson. I think the people who are whining about the tutorial not being simplified enough should teach THEMSELVES some photoshop basics first, or open up help once in a while, if they want to progress to a neat trick like this. (that's what I do)

herox04/20/2007

I didn't have a problem following it. Nice style.

Anonymous04/16/2007

you really suck at explaining but did a great job at making people feel stupid! thanks!!!

Anonymous04/16/2007

you really suck at explain but did a great job at making people feel stupid! thanks!!!

Lockwood04/16/2007

Very nice tutorial. I'm already in love with Illustrator, but seeing results like this from Photoshop make me want to migrate that way. I didn't know how to do a lot of the steps in the tutorial, but it made me play around to find the answers, which, in the end gave me a better end result IMO and actually taught me something rather than just following premade steps. Thanks a bunch.

Anonymous04/11/2007

The product looks absolutely amazing. The only problem is that the tutorial is too difficult to understand. There is no explanation whatsoever in any steps so this makes it quite hard for people to follow.

Anonymous04/08/2007

The effect is cool but please don't do any more tutorials. Really hard to follow and you don't explain so people understand.

g-diddy04/04/2007

those are really amazing. I love how they mirror the appearance of real light.

Answering some questions, I could've added more images, but that would make it too long... the best thing in photoshop is the almost unlimited results that you can get applying filters and blending options in different ways. The idea behind these tutorials that I've been adding here is show some of the results that I have discovered.... because of that, I add the files to be downloaded in case of doubts or if someone needs to see how it looks like the layers, the blendings.... Thanks for the comments, and I'll try to add screencasts of some tutorials here...

Anonymous04/03/2007

It's really hard to follow, a cool effect, but I'm not so good at photoshop. I couldn't get my gradient to work as well as yours and I couldn't find the render on the magic hat. Do you have to pay for that? I noticed a lot of stuff on that site you needed to pay for. I think you could add quite a few steps to make it a little bit easier for people like me.

AJ BadBoyzStudioZee.com04/03/2007

There is so much to learn and do with Photoshop. This is a fantastic effect! I have been slow in learning some of the trickier moves, but I am not bad with manipulation effects. Wish there were more outlets to make money with this kind of art rather than just giving it away all the time... You know?

MR04/01/2007

Great work, wonderful, this is helpful!
I like it, thanks

candycanes03/31/2007

cool. that was really interesting...

Anonymous03/31/2007

Anonymous03/29/2007

this looks amazing.
although i'm having a mental lapse, how did you twist/rotate the text?

Anonymous03/29/2007

This is a great trick which seems fairly simple to create. Thanks!

I have a few photoshop tips on my bog at www.canvas-art-prints-uk.com

Anonymous03/29/2007
