I haven't tested everything in the 5.11 lineup but judging from the items weve ran hard in TNP, 5.11 products are tough, durable, and reasonably priced. Their "TacLite Pro" pants (previously reviewed) are category winners (although the Tru-Spec® 24/7s are equally excellent it seems). The tactical load bearing equipment from 5.11 isn't flashy or uber-tactical but it works and dominates some other lines in terms of value. Both their "Plate Carrier" and VTAC "Tactical Vest" are excellent, providing very solid mounting platforms. Case in point, the Tactical Vest dispenses with "extraneous engineering" to give you a slim, lighweight, and functional MOLLE pouch foundation. For around $80 (less if you get a deal, price/models subject to discontinuance and change of course), you get an outstanding MOLLE platform in black, coyote brown, or olive drab colorations. The positives are many: light, high quality nylon webbing and clips, stiff and tough nylon mesh gives outstanding ventilation, precise MOLLE specification adherence, heavy duty YKK zipper (which does not unzip itself like other designs), hydration/armor panel pocket (back side only), hidden drag handle, interior pockets, and easy-enough adjustment. Another huge bonus: an uncluttered shoulder area that enables a clean and fast buttstock placement of your gun. That vest is the result of their commitment, expressed by John Crist here, to "functional innovation" and is a perfect example of the philosophy discussed here. And the 5.11 philosophy shows throughout the its line as we discussed some pouches, holster ideas, the vests, loadout bags (SOMS Bag!), the clothing, and the 5.11 knives. None of it is overpriced and they are serious, running amazing specials on their website and including free gear at times (belt with pants). Their wide range of mag and equipment pouches are all excellent (and limited in coloration so as to remain affordable) and feature their Slick Stick® quick MOLLE attachment system that works. This is a line where you generally get more than you paid for: It's high wear gear that lasts and that remains true to its law enforcement heritage. I made it a point to visit their booth at 2010 SHOT because I remain a fan; thanks to John for a great booth review and supporting the military, LEOs, and responsible civilians with this great stuff! ///////////////////////// Music: From TNPr ElDudio (youtube.com/user/eldudio).
