アメリカの伝統的なカウボーイ・ソングです。歌詞は各地のカウボーイが歌っていたものをハイグレイが１８７６年にまとめたものです。何度か収集されていてバラエティに富んでいます。原詞では６番までありますが、ここでは３番編成にしました。拙い直訳を作っていて「落胆させる言葉」という箇所で途惑いましたが、カウボーイが移動していて、定住している人々から侮蔑されるような言葉を受けたからだと思われます。
