GREENSBORO, N.C. –UNCG spotlights three icons of peace building – Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi and Daisaku Ikeda – on Sunday, Jan. 31.
“A Legacy of Building Peace,” free and open to the public, runs from 2 p.m.-8 p.m. in Elliott University Center Auditorium. Keynote speaker is Dr. Lawrence Carter, dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel and professor of religion at Morehouse College in Atlanta.
Carter’s address begins at 4 p.m. Following his speech, Yvonne Johnson, Greensboro’s first African-American mayor, receives the 2010 Community Builders Award.
Attendees can enjoy a traveling exhibit about King, Gandhi and Ikeda – president of Soka Gakkai International, a Buddhist association with 12 million members across the globe – before and after the keynote address and awards program. The program also includes a video about the men.
