Exhibit will show King, Gandhi photos

Victor Morales • The Desert Sun • January 4, 2010

A well-regarded photo exhibit depicting three preeminent peacemakers will be on display in the Coachella Valley this month in conjunction with the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.

The “Gandhi, King, Ikeda: A Legacy of Building Peace” photo exhibit will come to the Cathedral City Library for a two-day run, following the national observance of King's birthday on Jan. 18.

The dates are the only ones scheduled for the valley and the county, said Veronica Evans, a Riverside County Library branch manager.

“Rather than mimic the typical MLK events, I sought to bring about a new approach to commemorating MLK,” Evans said.

The exhibit will feature s-curve walls featuring panels of color photographs, inspiring quotes and facts about Mohandas Gandhi, Daisaku Ikeda and King.

It is divided into five sections that present the peacemakers' lives in key themes such as human dignity, nonviolence and adversity.

The exhibit was made possible by a variety of sources including a grant by the California Council of the Humanities, said Cindy Delanty, deputy administrator for the Riverside County Library System.

The exhibit will be at the library from noon to 6 p.m. Jan. 23 and from 1 to 5 p.m. Jan. 24.

The library is at 33-520 Date Palm Drive. Seating is limited for a roundtable discussion scheduled for 3 to 4 p.m. Jan. 24.
