While many have been fixated on when Apple will announce a new tablet product, The Wall Street Journal says it has found out when the device will actually be available to customers.

Sources have told the Journal that a 10- or 11-inch touch-screen tablet computer will begin shipping in March. Another source says that there are at least two different finishes for the device that Apple is either still deciding on or perhaps planning to charge different prices for each.

Though there's been a lot of speculation about the tablet, there are no confirmed details yet. Industry observers are anticipating a late January announcement (January 27, according to AllThingsD) of a slate-style computer that could be used as a touch-screen e-reader and video display with wireless access for around $1,000.

Not sure I'd pay $1000 for a 10" or 11" Touch, but I'd sure love to see one!

Same here. Wake me when the third coming of the Apple Tablet Thingie staggers out of the rumor mill, with specs that include a snazzy rotary dial and training wheels.

I just hope it has a decent name.... Basically, anything Apple makes, people will buy, but I just don't want a bunch of "Apple Touchpads" all on the street.

Here are a list of names @ baduku

While I use an iMac I think the $1000 price range is a bit too high for it to be wildly successful.

$1000???? A 11" screen, with less usability than almost any laptop and most netbooks. Granted, we dont know all the specs of this thing, but come on. This tablet probably wont have a DVD drive on it, so you cant watch DVDs. Its going to be running Apple software, meaning limited programs that run on it. Apple has to be smoking crack.
That rant aside, I am curious to see what its full range of specs will be. I am also curious to see what kind of spin Apple will use, to sell this thing. Especially, if that $1000 price tag turns out to be true.

Why don't you wait until the product is officially announced before responding to its price, features or lack thereof.

I hope it doesnt have an optical drive. Those are as dead as floppy drives IMO. I don't want one. I can watch all the movies (HD and otherwise) I can possibly have time for with out old tech physical disks.

I don't see any reliable sources...aka Apple...behind this. If anyone at Apple actually lets this kind of info out, it'd be their head. I think people just want to get their news read and so they make stuff up based on educated guesses. Since everyone else is guessing, after the truth comes out no one remembers all the wrong predictions.

Ok, my thought is $599 and they will sell a ton. Much above that and there are just too many of us that already have solutions that do most of what this product will do.

In essence, if it is an expanded e-book reader, with the internet & video viewing goodies, it fills a niche. If it is an expensive, less flexible, laptop, there is just no point.

Has there been any talk that it could also double as your TV remote? I'm not just talking for an Apple TV but for any television setup. the Logitech Harmony 1100 is a tablet style remote that does this. That'd be a cool extra function that would make me a little more interested.

With all the tablets announced and already running out there, the media once again bites at Apples' framing of the development as "Apple's, and all the others". Apple's huge marketing budget that successfully drives this PR is what you buy when you pay the extra several hundred dollars for the Apple version of whatever.

" Let me know when I can email, surf the web, play music, even call/text people and then I'm in."

You should be able to that sometime in March.

Ok, a couple of things. One is, a tablet with a screen that, if you drop, it's likely broken. Do you really think Apple is going to cover that?

Second, referencing the story of Apple putting that App that made hollywood angry? Why are people so intent on paying so much for device covered under an echosystem so closed?

This is ridiculous.

Really because the itouch and iphone don't have a screen that can break when you drop it?
by jcmark42 January 4, 2010 4:18 PM PST
Who knows if any of the above is true. If it is, then $1,000 is wayy to high for me.

I know. 2010 and we still have rumors on it only four days into the year. Might as well call it Pandora's Box.

I will trow a guess. Specs: Intel ULV 1.6GHz, 2GB Ram, 128GB Solid State Drive. Wifi N. 1 USB port and 1 monitor output (HDMI maybe) Using a lite version of Snow Leopard. So basicly a 11' Netbook ($300) + Better proccesor ($60) + Solid State Drive ( $250) + touch interface ($200)= $810 + Apples Brand ($189) = $999. Yes the catch of price is portability and and more conftable multimedia interface. And its not a bad price considering that a Ipone without the At&T subsidies would cost $600. So ad the biger size and extra stuff and you well get there. Ohh and I guees that there second version will bringe 3G capability.

@andgrav: I'm thinking similar. But 3g off the bat.

What I want to know is if this thing is going to be out in a few months, and apple has to make millions of them, why are we guessing on the screen size? Hasn't someone gotten an order for 1+ milliion 10" screens? or 11" screens? Wouldn't that be hard to hide or keep quiet?

If we're still wondering about the screen size (which suggests they ahven't bee built/ordered/shipped/etc.) that makes me think this is a way from reality if even happening at all.
