On a sunny April morning almost 17 years ago,
I first arrived at the Mitaka campus to join in the
ceremonies for new faculty members. As a
newcomer to the Faculty of Foreign Studies, I had
little idea of what exciting times lay ahead!
Our faculty has faced many challenges. I am
especially happy to have been a part of two in
particular. One is the ongoing revision of our
curricula to better address the changing needs of
our students. The other is the establishment of
the Graduate School with its emphasis on
international development and cooperation, a
mission that is close to my heart.
Most of my professional career, I have taught
composition and communication skills. About ten
years ago, my interests also turned to the
emerging field of popular culture studies. And
with the support of the University, I developed
several new courses at both the undergraduate
and postgraduate levels, using popular culture as
a basis for cross-cultural comparisons. The
positive response of our students to these courses
has been very rewarding.
After retirement, I will continue to serve as a
member of the editorial board of the
and to pursue my interests in
culture studies.
On a personal note, I am looking forward to returning
to live in my home, the United States. I hope to travel,
enjoy the company of old friends, and play with my
grandchildren.
I will always remember Kyorin University with deep
gratitude. I chose to enter a profession dedicated to
helping young people achieve their potential, and I
thank the University for giving me the opportunity to
carry out this work with so many wonderful people.
To all my dear friends and colleagues, I wish to
also say a heartfelt“thanks”for your support,
generosity, and kindness through the years. I will
miss you and wish you the best of everything.
