Water drops in photoshop in 5 minutes

August 24, 2007

A couple of days ago while I was reading a magazine I saw a pretty cool soda ad where they used a lot of water drops in its design. It was excellent and I thought that I could create the same effect in Photoshop using the layer styles.

The basic idea of how to create water drops is that they are a bit complex, they have highlights, shadows, transparencies, inner shadows and inner highlights. The best thing is that we can create all of those effects using the Layer Styles in Photoshop. You have shadow, inner shadow, inner glow, glow, bevel and many more.

Even though there are lots of Photoshop training tutorials on the net I decided to create my own, plus it gave me an opportunity to create my first screencast. Take a look it’s only 5 minutes.

If you want to see it in full resolution go to http://www.screencast.com/t/Nl8tRrfNT

The final result:

Water Drops in 5 minutes

Very cool tutorial, thanks!

where is the tutorial ?

Anonymous08/03/2009

This tut would be helpful if you could speak about what are you doing on the screencast.

Also attach the brush settings to the .psd.

Great, I learn so much every time I come to this site!
Tutes are very easy to follow.

Adapt10/05/2008

Well, here's mine; http://i37.tinypic.com/6yh6s7.jpg . My drops didn't turn out as good as yours, mine look to dark, even on a lighter background, which is why I made it darker. I also sort of strayed from the path in terms of the ending. By the way, this is an amazing tutorial, your a God at Photoshop.

kezzie08/24/2008

The no audio thing is fine for this tut. If you needed him to explain what he was doing, you're not ready for the tut. Practice and revisit. Great ideas btw. Love this site so much.

dotacje unijne07/25/2008

Very nice tut. I use this method to my flash presentation.
Thx for your knowledge! ;-)

Susana07/23/2008

I really liked your tutorial, it's a shame you didn't speak at all :p you can record an audio explaining what you're doing and edit later.. It would be a great help to begginers and a lot more interesting to watch :)

Thanks everybody for the comments, I will write a tutorial with photos showing how to do that.

Janni10/23/2007

Humm... Is it only me that cant see a discription off how it is done? I can only see the final picture... :-( Sad cause it looks awesome... And sounds easy...

closa10/09/2007

thought you're going to do something complicated...I was wrong!

thanks for tutorial

Dale10/08/2007

Nice!

I think you should list down all the values of each of the blending options though.

Cresk10/05/2007

I made a similar action and brush-sets a little while ago for a client who needed an orange/fanta like droplets header in both Photoshop and Illustrator. I think this is one of the better ways to do this in PS.

However, I think its' such a shame that videos like this are so tiny and blurred. No details can be watched and it just vanishes in my 22" screen.

Nevertheless, great work and nice post.
you could accompany this post with a little action and/or brush-set / style for people to download.

Ron Wolpa09/23/2007

I simply loved the water drops , regrettably the tutorial can´t be openned

Just to watch the episode of Pixel Perfect where he does this exact thing...but shows you how.

Griffin09/01/2007

Howabout on software people can actually afford, like the Gimp (free), or Corel Paint Shop Pro (about $100)? I prefer the Gimp since PSP isn't made for Linux, though I consider it far superior to Photoshop when it comes to usable UI.

I used to love PSP, but after I tried photoshop I was hooked. Most things that the average web designer or graphic designer use are just faster with photoshop. Plus you have to realize that the writers have to consider their audience when they are writing articles. Most people viewing this site (based on comments) have photoshop. Hence, most of the tutorials are going to be about photoshop.

Thanks for the post. I'll be having a play with that technique this evening.

Keep up the good work.

I've WONDERED for the longest time how to do this! This is so KEWL!

One day that I get a Photoshop, I ought to try this!

Ta4ka08/26/2007

Very cool tutorial, thanks!

Yong Hwee08/26/2007

Will be checking out the screencast later. Anyway, slightly off topic but nice wallpaper you're using. Where can I find it?

Anonymous08/25/2007

It would be nice to have step by step instructions, perhaps a screenshot or two. Also, can't you do this in like 3 clicks with After Effects?

Tim McCormack08/25/2007

Since this technique is content-agnostic, it would be easier to use, understand, and experiment with as a PSD download rather than a screencast. Would you be willing to provide the PSD for download? (Using the Coral CDN for free bandwidth of course. :-P)

Anonymous08/25/2007

I don't see any tutorial..

Jonathan Solichin08/25/2007

Woahhh I have to admit that is cool. At first I thought it was going to be some cheesy effect, but u sure proved me wrong. Great tutorial!

BTW. is the video suppose to have sound?

Derrick08/25/2007

I can spare some bandwidth for your video for free if you want. Yousnedit the file to me.

Derrick08/25/2007

Well if you need a mirror, I don't mind sparing some bandwidth for free. Yousendit the file to me.

abduzeedo08/25/2007

My Jing account, where the screecast is, has reached the monthly bandwidth limit of 1GB. Viewers cannot access any media in my account until my next monthly bandwidth allocation begins. I will have to find another place to publish the screencast... Thanks for the comment...

zx08/25/2007

The link to screencast don't work: 'We're sorry! We were unable to locate the requested page.' And it's hard to see anything on the little video you've posted. ;)
