Stopping a Process in Windows XP or Vista
Why would you need to kill a process in Windows XP or Vista? We sometimes need to stop a process to diagnose a system problem, such as removing Spyware or computer viruses. One of the easiest yet most efficient way to accomplish this is to use the built-in Task Manager in Windows XP or Vista. Here’s how you do it:
- Press “Alt+Ctrl+Delete“, then click on “Task Manager“. You can also launch the Task Manager instantly if you press Ctrl + Shift + ESC simultaneously. This is much easier than accessing it from Ctrl + Alt + Delete or the taskbar. It works for both Windows XP or Windows Vista.
- Select the process that you want to stop, then click on “End Process“.
It’s advised not to stop a system process. Stopping a system process can cause the computer to hang or freeze up.

I bought SPYWARE DOCTOR and it apparently removes all the infection , reboots and then runs itself again when it restarts to confirm the removal worked…
Yeah.. it wasn’t free…
running it now and will update with my comments once completed..
By Peter on Mar 8, 2007 | Reply
ok.. it found 9 more infections.. hmm.. it found them before as well.. spyaxe.. and another trojan. it’s rebooting now.. but the main thing is it seems to have gotten rid of spydawn anyway.. and that was the purpose of the exercise… so .. for spydawn. it works well..
By peter on Mar 9, 2007 | Reply
OK.. ALL GONE.. so.. at least that’s a confirmed alternative but at a price.. for me… worth it…
although, I still am waiting for an explanation why it got through in the first place when I had all the features including the immunization..

Contrary to what you say about causing system instability, it depends entirely on what you’re terminating. If it’s a system process, then yes, expect system hang ups. But most of the time, XP or Vista will prevent you from terminating these processes anyway.

Here is what can really help somebody… How do you find and kill whatever process is taking up all the CPU if task manager won’t even work due to the CPU being all used up? Without task manager, you can’t even find which process is taking up the CPU power, let alone terminate it.

I have just suceeded in deleting the annoying Spylocked 3.6(mine was a dxovx.dll), by following Kevin Binkleys instructions in this link
http://www.xp-vista.com/other/how-to-unregister-dll-files
Thank you!
See the instruction underneath:
Kevin Binkley Says
after I located the .dll file (in my case it was oyopu.dll) I did a system wide search (from the start menu) for that particular file. it was located in the system32 folder. I dragged it to my desktop and renamed the file extension to .doc. The program will continue to run after you change the extension which prevents you from deleting it at this point. Once you re-start the computer the program is no longer able to run and you can now delete it.
(After this step, I furthermore deleted the spylocked 3.6.exe through the task manager. – Tine)

Hi there,

I have this demon virus it gives me a pop up box saying two things
“Windows can not start click here to search for a fix”
I click and nothing fixes it, the pop up box stops me from doing anything on the deasktop or start menu! I also have the VirusProtectpro 3.3 in the back ground asking me to register or pay $49.95 to fix the problem. I have read this thread yet if i cannot get rid of this blocking pop up then I can go to system restore etc!
What can i do, I have had this new lap top all of three days and this happens. Hope there is hope for my issue please help

Does using that program get rid of everything, or do I still have to go through the files they listed and delete them?
By Brian on Aug 6, 2007 | Reply
Aaron,
The tool should remove the spyware automatically, but it requires to pay for removal so I would recommend you to try the manual removal steps first.

you what it is basic. but some viruses disable the taskmanager. so how you stop a process if there is no taskmanager… sometimes a virus minimize a taskmanager at a time you open it.
By Dan on Feb 10, 2008 | Reply
to replace the locked taskmanager you can use “process manager” from SysInternals, the adware doesn’t block that one!
then using autoruns (which tells you what is and will run and in what part of your system at a given time) you can disable the process or kill it altogether (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx) using the free versions of lavasoft’s anti-adware program or spyhunter, you can find the directories in which the files are and delete them accordingly. you have to mess around unregistering dlls and blocking cookies afterwards, this approach is kind of messy if you’re not entirely sure what you’re doing, but it’s free and it works!

Learnt a whole lot of information. I had the problem of Virus Heat inundating my screen suddenly without warning.
It was daunting as Virus Heat came on while I was watching a porn page.
This porn page too came on w/o my invitation.
At that moment of weakness, I did not have the sense to get out immediately.
Learnt about ‘end process’ here . . . went back got rid of Virus Heat . . . and came back to download the recommended application above.
It was trying indeed t read some of the comments that were generously sprinkled with spelling errors and colloquial phrases.
However, am thankful and grateful for the information.

Spydoctor is a joke. It does not remove that trustedantivirus alert. I have tried it numerous times by using the intelliscan and the full scan. the alert still appears. The only time it does not appear is when i am on any spyware website. Spydoctor is suppose to be number one according to the consumer report site and Pc magazine. None of those spyware programs are effective.

I had the prompt in the taskbar popping up for 2 days every 30 seconds telling me to buy virusheat software. this prompt is working of a .dll file. in my case baoohy.dll. to find out wich one is doing this go to search in start menu-type in .dll all of them will come up. sort them by date modified, go to the day when it first popped up. it should be there, and it sits in the system32 folder now move it to your desktop and rename it to a “.doc” file. restart computer. delete the file on the desktop. look for it it is gone and no more prompt in taskbar. live is good.

SEARCH on “task manager has been disabled by the administrator”

Hey guys. I got rid of Antivirus XP 2008 in a matter of minutes using system restore and i didnt have to fool around with the whole task manager and deleting .dll junk. (i actually couldnt even open task manager as it was disabled by the virus). just restart your computer and hit F8 during start up and it’ll prompt you for system restore. all you gotta do is make sure the date you choose to restore it to was before you got the malware. i only had mine for a matter of days
make it easy on yourself and just do system restore. hope this helps, let me know

Do you have to download the program for your computer to be infected? Because I don’t think I did – I just exited the windows as best I could and then ended the program on my task manager. Not sure if that’s good enough though – I’ve done a manual search on my computer, and there doesn’t appear to be any suspicious programs or anything.

When you try to open Task Manager, the following error may occur:
Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator
This error is caused if the DisableTaskMgr restriction is enabled. To enable Task Manager, try one of these methods:
IMPORTANT: If this restriction was enabled in your system without you doing anything or without your knowledge, then it’s highly likely that a Virus has blocked the usage of Task Manager in your system by enabling the DisableTaskMgr policy via the registry. I strongly suggest that you perform a thorough checkup of your system immediately.
Click Start, Run and type this command exactly as given below: (better – Copy and paste)
REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

The FTC has caught the perpetraters in this XP antispyware 2009 scam- apparently over 1,000,000 people purchased the $40 fix online. My PC is still fucked from this virus and has been for several months- as soon as I think I have removed everything it comes back- make sure that in the ‘log off, restart PC, turn off PC window that you do not allow any installs when you see that pirated shield logo.
There is a special place ion hell for the peices of shit that are responsib;e for this.
Contact the FTC and demand two things 1- that they force the criminals to make the fix available to all for free- preferably through the FTC website so concumers know it is legit. 2- prosecute these mother fuckers and throw the key away- until we start treating these as the very serious crimes that they are people will ocntinue to do it. If they know there is serious jail time if they are caught they won’t!

I just lost another hard drive two weeks ago because it keep re-starting from the bios and back to the windows starting screen. Anyway, I don’t here anyone in congress making any noise about this, it is costing us alot of money and time, not to mention it is a security threat to our country.

Dear all,
Indeed, microsoft has been a big disapointment. The so called (by MS) operating systems actually lack some of the basic features that were supposed to be present on a real OS. It doesn’t cross anyones mind that an administrator user can not kill a process, because the same process doesn’t feel like shutting down. Imagine the follwing dialog:
OS to a process – Could you pleeeeease shut down?
)))
process – Why?
OS – Well…because I’m asking…
process – Ok…maybe if you ask nicely I’ll consider it
OS – Maybe you’re busy…I’ll wait 20 secons…
process – Don’t bother…I still have 2000 files do screw with and over 100 exe to infect…
OS – Are you a virus or something???
Process – If you were a XP I would say ‘no’, but has you are Vista and you actually don’t have nay power to shut down processes…yeah, I’m a virus
OS – oh god!!! what can i do?? what can I do??

hi
i tried to sytem restore 4 times to different point s and removed all those processes from the task manages idea but everytime i reboot it manages to come back as a different entry. i dont have time to keep rebooting trying system restore. Does spyhunter really work???? it is for my daughters laptop she uses for school so we have to get rid of it – she didnt know that it was a virus as it looked like norton. everytime i do a restore it comes back saying it cannot be restored to that point….
help please

Any reaon why system restore would say it can’t be restored to that point?? I keep trying to go back to a checkpoint i January or February – I have several dates to choose from but they are all saying it can’t be restored to that point.
I am having issues with too many processes running the background that are slowing my internet speed down emensley. I have no spyware, adware, virsus or anything like that. I am pretty savvy with my computers but I haven’t come across this before….
Anyone got any ideas?? I know how to stop a process in task manager but that doesnt help the next time I restart my computer. How do I stop processes from starting from the get-go? I see alot of things on my list that I don’t know what they are…. 46 processes running right now…. any help/ideas would be appreciated!!

I have the antivirus-xp-pro 2009 virus on my computer. Not being too savvy, I figured I’d do a search for all files in sys32 created on 19 Mar.2009 (the day of the infection). I found 4 files (one of which was the Trojan found by Symantec (Trojan was called “Favaena”). I deleted the four files (ahtc gif, frmwrks.exe, dt64.dll, one more I can’t remember). Apparently, it also deleted some other files which screwed up my desktop. Trying to “system restore” but it keeps hanging up after the reboot. Giving up. Any advise besides, “don’t amateurishly delete stuff ad-hoc even when extremely desperate and pissed”.

I just called microsoft. They did a great job removing this thing. Also, the State of Maryland in December 2008 issued an injuntion against the group who was doing this and set up a fund to compensate victims from funds seized by the gov. They got 1 million people to buy their fraudulent product.

Hi All: I googled Microsoft “help” tel.# and got a “technician” with a strong Bollywood accent. He assured me not to worry because he was going to HELP me. But first he wanted my VISA # etc. and told me that he would charge my account only $299.00 which would give me three years of “service”. I told him no, no, no and then he came up with a payment plan i.e. $9.00 p.m. I said NO, NO, NO again, stated that I was very disappointed in this Microsoft help and hung up. Then I went into Windows Task Master (CTR/Shift/ESC), scanned down to WinPCDefender and KILLED it (End Process). So far so good. It has been a lousy few days while trying to get rid of this thing but thanks to all the suggestions on this site, my PC is OK again. THANKS !!!! Ria

Yikes ! I spoke too soon. This morning IT was back. I ended the process via the Task Manager again but I assume that after I turn off the computer the WinPCDefender finds it way back in. I will turn off my modum tonight and see if that works; will report back. RIA
P.S. It has also affected my “System Restore” which no longer works.

My computer was so locked up that all I had on the screen was my background and the PCenter Screen. I couldn’t get to the Start button and all the icons were gone.
If you know anything about DOS commands, you can get rid of Privacy Center also.

For those of you who are not able to open task manager due to the spyware, follow the following instructions to get rid of your problem. Restart your Computer, as soon as you start seeing a blackscreen start hitting F8. This will pull open the option to open Windows in safemode.(For those of you that got an option for a bootdisk, exit that and keep hitting F8) Safemode does not allow additional programs to run aside from windows manufacture settings. From here there are a couple of choises on how to proceed: Option 1 (and probably the easiest for most people courtesy of anthony) is go to to start menu, all programs, accessories, system tools and finally click on system restore. Follow the steps and rest your settings to an earlier date and get rid of the spywares control on your system. OPTION 2 is for those who for whatever reason chose to disengage the ability to system restore (that will teach you!) Once you are in safemode you can safeley root out the various trjoans, spywares and virus’ that have taken control. I reccomend going into your windows folder and organizing files by date last modified. When you see a suspect file check it against the internet to see if it is bogus and then delete it. Also go to Start, Run and type in MSCONFIG. This is where you can keep apps from loading themselves upon start up; so find the bogus spyware here and disable it. On a side note for everyone that hates yahoo, aol, and the thousands of other programs that like to start on their own this is the place to keep that from happening. If your computer is not too far gone, this should help; otherwise you either need to pay a profesional or just buy a new harddrive. Good luck and sorry for any spelling errors

How do you know how far back to go to select a restore point for the system restore? How do you check to find the date that your computer became infected?

NEVER download antispyware 2008 xp programs. It is a scam designed to scare you into buying the program. If you do purchase it (DO NOT DO IT), the scammers will steal your credit card information, your identity, etc, and the program won’t get rid of the viruses because it is a virus itself.
Just google “antispyware 2008 xp” to see for yourself.

Hey, here is a way to get the ctrl alt del thing to work.
I know that stupid security usualy kills it but I found that if you restart your computer and as soon as you put in your password and it goes to your desktop hit the magic buttons.
You have to do this before it starts initialising your programs. Otherwise it fails.
As soon as it comes up start hitting the end task button. The security thing should be the top program anyway so just click it fast until it shows up.
Then you can shut it down before it gets its grip. Thus allowing you to get spyware stoppers and such working.

One quick note to Nana’s post. If anybody has the msa virus, follow the instructions in Nana’s post on July 3, 2009 (above). Her instructions work perfectly. Note, however, that the most recent version of this virus seems to be called “msa.exe” and not “personal antivirus” as Nana calls it in her post. Basically, just delete anything that looks like msa.exe (instead of Personal Antivirus as Nana calls it). Then, I also followed the other instructions found on the main page regarding the Registry, but I didn’t need to. Nana’s fix had deleted all forms of the virus already in the Registry.

New way to find name of file. Do a search on hidden files using search tool on the word security. It will find the link on the desktop. Move your mouse over the file and it will give you the name of that file. Boot an xp disk and go in and delete.
mine was under all user\ applicationdat\37335526\37335526.exe

I also just tried my other pc and was able to rename the file, but not delete. On reboot all was well enough to run malware bytes

I had the problem with Cyber Security. Downloaded itself onto my computer and kept giving me bogus security scans and threats, etc. I clicked on help and frequently asked questions on the cyber security pop-up screen. One of the FAQ was “how do I remove cyber security off of my computer”. The answer was to run the special uninstall program. I could not find this uninstall thing anywhere. Then I came here and saw something about going to common files, so I tried looking again. I went to my computer, then C: drive, then program files, then common files, then I found something called CS uninstall. I clicked on that, and 2 seconds later a dialogue box popped up that said that the uninstall was complete. I have not had a problem since. I don’t know if it will be that easy for anyone else, but I hope it is.
