How to find and delete a file in Windows XP or Vista?
March 24th, 2007 | by Brian |Please forgive me if you have already known about this. I put the instructions here because people are always asking.
- From Start –> Search, then click on “For Files and Folders…“
- From “What do you want to search for?” list on the left, click on “All files and folders”
- Type the filenames on the search box, and choose the “Local Hard Drives” (normally, it’s C: drive)
- Click on “Search“. That’s it!

So, you can delete them from here?
By John on Apr 14, 2007 | Reply
Ok when it doesn’t find the files in search THEN what?
By Brian on Apr 14, 2007 | Reply
John,
I assumed that you were talking SpyLocked. In this case, you need to know that SpyLocked keeps changing over time so you need to look at the new “dll” that added to your machine. Just check the removal instructions and the comments, I believe it’s been mentioned how to detect and delete the infected new dll’s.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

By John on May 5, 2007 | Reply
I have most of the junk removed associated with SpyLocked. My home page will load now as it should, but I still have the flashing alert in the system tray (a popup show there) and another popup window will appear every now and then. I have deleted everything I can find that is associated with this crap and have also run different versions of spy ware removal tools. What am I missing?

In my case the name of the file was xouce.dll
I had some problem to delete it so I did the following.
I renamed it to xouce.doc, put it on the desktop, restarted the cpmouter and after that it was possible to delete it
By john on May 13, 2007 | Reply
I tried renaming but get access denied message. Any other ideas?

I had the same problem as Jolle and the same solution worked for me as well. Changed it from .dll to .doc and moved it. After restart it was nothing to delete.
Only difference was my problem file was uimcu.dll

By rick on Jun 26, 2007 | Reply
To find the .dll name, I followed the instructions given on this page and be sure to include Jolle’s instructions, then I went to the page that listed the possible spylocked .dll’s and inserted each one and did a search. I started with the new ones and worked backwards and found it in the second try. good luck
By Christopher on Jun 28, 2007 | Reply
Because the .dll is “in use” you have to delete it in safe mode. Use either the command prompt or Windows safe mode.
For the command prompt do the following
type cd\
type dir /s
the “/s” searches the entire drive including sub directories.
then type del to get rid of this little beast
You see knowing DOS is still important. If you were a client, I would charge $45 per hour for this. A real money maker!

I cant find any files associated with the virusprotectpro spyware, my problem is, its showing an icon in the taskbar, and with clicking the icon ie7 opens and “http://www.virusprotectpro.com/?aff=1012″ site comes, and it uses almost 99% cpu, so i have to kill “explorer.exe” from taskmanager. But how can I get rid of this ? I deselected all the *.exe files from the startup (by msconfig), though the icon exists after booting.
Any help or suggestions ?

I too have spy shredder on my computer. the bugger is annoying and hard to remove. it also keeps popping itself into my System Tray and it gives me alerts every 5 minutes – yep – ANNOYING ;o)
has anyone tried bleepingcomputers.com? Is it a trusty site? has it helped anyone?
looking for people with experience specifically with SPY SHREDDER.
XP ViSta says: SpyShredder, also known as Spy-Shredder, is counterfeit anti-spyware / anti-malware software. SpyShredder usually installed itself onto your PC without your permission, through Trojan, virus and fake software. Spy Shredder will display fake security alerts or notifications to trick user to buy the paid version of Spy Shredder. It is very important to remove all the components of Spy Shredder and all the malware and trojans that it might have come bundle with (such as zlob.trojan, trojan.vundo and Trojan.Downloader)

Hey Guys(And Girls)
I need a bit of help here. Im having similar problems to the other people posting here. I’ve got toprates.dll on my computer, and i think thats all. I’ve attempted to rename the file, but i was unable to due to the fact that it is in use. I can’t delete it either, for the same reason earlier stated. For those of you farther behind than me, i do have some tips.
1. Check your registry by going into start/ run/ and type in regedit. That will bring up the registry editor. Press ctrl F to search. Search for the file names you will find using the program(Free)in number 2
2. Download SpyHunter 3. You can scan, but you can’t delete. You’ve got to register to have the ability to do so. However, it does say the file location, so you can begin to remove all this junk yourself. It might be easier just to by the software though…
If anyone has anything that may be helpful to me, please please please please please post something here. I hope I’ve been of some help to a few of you.
By Ben on Jan 2, 2008 | Reply
Hey, I’m back again, this time with a healthy computer. Try the stuff in my previous post, and if that doesn’t work, i’ve got something that may help. Use the windows system recovery program. When you reboot your computer, it should give you the option to go into safe mode, or system recovery mode, blah blah blah. In the system recovery mode, your computer enables you to select a previous date, and restore the settings to how it was that day. For me, i only had to go back two days. I may be more for you. You can also access this system recovery mode by rebooting, entering safe mode, and it will proceed to ask you whether or not you wanted safe mode, if you click no, it will bring up the system recovery program. It took me about ten minutes, but i guess it could vary alot, because your computer may have a lot more data to restore. I hope i’ve been of some help. Write a response if it works or if you still need help.

By Kevin on Jan 4, 2008 | Reply
This is what worked for me, I had the toprates.dll:
To find the .dll problem:
Start>My Computer>Local Disk>Windows
In the windows file, right click to “VIEW” “DETAILS”
Then right click to “ARRANGE ICONS BY” and click “MODIFIED”.
This will arrange all the icons so you can find the problem .dll file according to the date and time you started having the problem. Mine was easy, it happened 15 minutes ago.
To delete the .dll file:
Mine could not be erased by clicking on it because it said it was being used by another person or something liek that. I tried moving it to my desktop and I tried renaming it, none of that worked.
So… I restarted my computer and held the F8 key down. I selected restart in safe mode with networking, then redid what is listed above. I found the .dll file again in safe mode, then right clicked on the file and selected delete. I then restarted the computer and everything is fine.
Hopefully that works for you guys as well.

Ben, i have the same problem you did, and i just now found this posting, i already did spyhunter 3 lol.. seems we did the same thing, i was hoping not to have to go into safe mode but it seems the only way i guess. I’ve tried all other ways. A website said if you go into command prompt and typed the directory that toprates.dll was in type it like this: regsvr32 /u toprates.dll the /u was for the unregistering of the dll for you to be able to delete it from the directory. i tried this several times and it still did not work. If this is the same toprates.dll that you had then you had an annoying popup saying your computer is infected with spyware! and actually it was a bad website scamming you into buying their antivirus or w.e somethin like Files search or w.e.. neways.. this is actually a trojan called Trojan.obfuscated.gx .. prolly the worst trojan i’ve ever faced. im normally good at taking down trojans if i get one but this is the worst one for me.

I did a general search for “Spyware” and the only results that showed were the Antispyware components. I deleted all the files (including the log files) and it got rid of the stupid thing from my computer. Sometimes it will say “cannot delete because file is in use” (or something along those lines). This occurred for me because I did not delete the log files first. After I deleted the log files, I was able to delete the folder that the antispyware program was on.

uh, hi. every time i try to exit antispyware (and i have vista) it opens a program called ‘bluescreen’which reboots the computer.
it stops me going on the internet on that computer, because it is now sooo slow, and i cant test whether the dll files are in use because every time i try to open it, it comes up with ‘open with’. im not sure if im doing the right thing either. and cristina, DONT DELETE ALL YOUR DLL’s.
also, i cant install spyhunter, even if i did have enough money, because i cant go on the internet.
we have tried to go to an earlier date, with system restore, because it had never been set to.
christopher, the thing didnt work. i might not hav been doing it right, but i typed pretty much EXACTLY what you said to, but it didnt work…
also, i would like to know whereabouts the dll for pc antispyware would be, just a general guess.

Unknowingly my computer has Winspyware Project and it has infected my computer. I did download the above spyware removal and am praying it works. I am at work right now as my computer keeps blinking on and off over and over and over again. I get into the C Drive and it blinks off. this is the icon screen. So…my problem, how do I use my disk if my screen keeps blinking before I can download. After about 10 times the icons do not come back. It does this also on safe mode. So my question is, will the sypware removal download on a blinking screen. Sounds silly I know, but it is driving me crazy and am fearful I am going to lose all my pictures saved on the computer.

I inadvertantly/unknowingly downloaded something called “AntiVirus XP 2008″ which seemed to take over my computer as it own… Maximum P’d O. set in. After a few frustrating attemtps at the “fixes’ above (didn’t work, wrong .dlls, etc.) I finally went to lunch, simmered down and THOUGHT about the problem. This is what seemed to work for me …so far: I went into “Search” and typed in *.dll. This listed EVERY .dll it could find. I then looked at the “DATE” of the last modification. (There were 5 .dlls that fell within the date/time frame of the invader). I renamed each of those starting with CRAPP, CRAPP1..etc. From there I DELETED the 5 which I had renamed.(the CRAPP family). I then went and renamed the file which had originally housed them (Crapp Holder) and then deleted that. So far I have NO indication that they continued to exist or invade my computer.

My nephew somehow downloaded xp2008 and malware
I worked 10 hours on it and couldn’t get them removed
he had McAfee and it showed his his computer was at risk
you hit the fix button and it jumped into the Xp 2008.
I called McAfee and all I got was a run around.
So I paid the 49.95 and installed the Xp 2008
and installed Windows live one care.
But in doing so I can’t upgrade to sevice pack 3 and the printer will not work.
my guess is to many firewalls.
I would like to uninstall the xp2008 but I’m afraid it will screw it up again.
Any suggestions.

Seriously renaming, restarting and deleting is the best way to do it. Just go to My Computer then Local Disk (c:) then go to program files and look for a file that doesn’t look familiar. Its usually just a bunch of giberish u can tell right away. Open it and the file you need to rename and delete is in there you just need to pick and delete. It took me about 3 tries but I finally deleting the little bugger. Once it stops popping up when you restart your computer just finish it off and delete the rest. If by chance it says you cannot delete it just drag that out to the desktop rename, restart your computer and delete.

Just a note, this Virus/malware is spread in many ways, sometimes it is from just going to a legitimate web server that has fallen victim to a SQL injection attack that has javascript code injected into the web site that automatically redirects you to the malware install site. usually it first installs a downloader that then starts installing all kinds of baddies, VAXP 2008 is just one variant. To prevent this in the future, install Firefox 3 for your browser (DO NOT EVER USE IE/SAFARI) then add the following plugins to Firefox (NoScript and ADblock plus) these will keep you from having scripts (java, axtivex, etc) run against your system in the background, it does not allow scripts to run unless you approve them. Check it out.

Antivirus XP 2008 generates different folder names. I managed to get rid of mine by following some of these instructions but something is still bothering me like how I can’t view my screen savers tab or wallpaper tab and on my task manager it keeps saying that IE is running when I’m using Firefox.
What I did to get rid the folder of Antivirus Xp 2008 was to find it on task manager and to end it’s process, then go to your C: and look for the folder. If you can’t figure out which one it is, just open every folder till you find the same icon that appeared the first time. Then you can just delete it and you can remove it from add/remove programs in control panel.

If you right click on the desktop icon, it will give you the file name to search it will say “Deleting the shortcut(the file name) only removes the icon. It does not unistall the program.” You then have the file name and can search for it and then you can delete it.. It took me a couple of hours to figure out but my virus is gone

i went to almost 20 websites trying to find the best way to get rid of this antivirus s**t. i honestly dont know if i totally got rid of it, but i didnt see it in my start-up menu and it hasnt popped up since i opened my laptop an hour ago after trying to fix this problem. now when i got this antivirus s**t, i immediately tried to uninstall using the add/remove program. it didn’t work. i tried doing the system restore, it didn’t work as well. i deleted/ended the process on task manager, magically, it keeps reappearing. i went under my computer and looked on the folder, deleted it but it didnt work because it said mcf71.dll being used. i tried deleting that but it didnt work as it was being used. i went to start>run>cmd> and tried unregistering that dll file or ending it, it didnt work. i tried doing EVERYTHING in hopes of uninstalling this s**t for like 5 hours. i renamed the file under my computer and finally i tried deleting it and it worked!!! i hurriedly went to my recycle bin and deleted it, went to task manager and looked for the name and ended the process (and it disappeared) went to start>run>msconfig and went to start-up and unclicked the weird name (which i assumed was the antivirus s**t) and restarted my computer and it has been antivirus s**t free! NOW, I DONT REALLY WHAT I DID TO MAKE IT GO AWAY BUT WHAT I SUGGEST IS TRY AND TRY ALL THESE THINGS especially renaming the file and then delete it then go to recycle bin and so on and so forth. I AM NOT A COMPUTER WHIZ BUT HOPEFULLY THIS WILL HELP SOMEBODY..

here are some things i did and currently am trying.
The antivirus icon on your comp, right click…rename to anything and delete and empty recycle bin.
Do this same thing for any icon related with this antivirus bullshit.
Another thing you can try, go to start, go to computer, go to the C drive ( it looks like Hp: C or w/e) go to Progams, find the antivirus file, do the renaming process and try to delete.
Another thing you can do is go to start, if you have vista like me you have a little bar where you can search for things, type in “system” and you will find system restore, and follow those directions.
I’m doing these right now this is very effing frustrating.

Well first I had gotten the oldest version of this install because I was ignorant and scammed. I was quickly able to stop the processes, delete, and get rid of any harmful material.
Later my brother was scammed and installed the newest version, which locked up and deleted many of the important files and keys needed to get rid of it manually. So I was fortunate that I had Mozilla Firefox installed and was able to get online, search it up, and install the trial version of Norton 360. If you don’t have Firefox you need to install it and get this program to scan and remove nearly all of this problem. If you don’t have access to the internet then you need to go on another computer and transfer the Mozilla browser some how.
After I did this I kept scanning and finding corrupt internet files on my PC. The anti-virus could not remove it. I then searched the toolbar named “rosqxvmn” and found out it was part of the problem. I am currently removing and unregistering the files and components.
As soon as you have finished with the main removal of this you must create a new user in order to bring back some commands like the control panel and the “all programs” folder in your start menu.
*Note that once this has been installed you cannot access your All Programs folder, Control Panel, or the Internet Explorer. I recommend that you keep desktop icons of My Computer, a usable internet browser such as Mozilla, and a desktop icon of some sort of anti virus remover. Also note that you cannot do System Recover while infected and that some files and folders remain after removal such as the reason why my IE still pops up without permission.*
Manual setting will need to be reset such as the clock because of the “you are infected” or what have you on the right of it.

This could even be usable if Windows 2000/XP/Vista had working file searching. Unfortunately after MS replaced their file search application (the one included in 9x series and NT4) with the file indexing service there is no reliable search solution included in Windows. You are forced to install external applications for both simple disk search and data extraction/database generation based search.

Have the Antivirus 2008 on my computer. This must be a modified version because the AV2008 I had on a previous computer looked different. There are no AV2008 references in any folders, just the X in red on the tool/taskbar. This newer version changes my IE homepage to goggle and the re-directs any search for antivirus tools. It has also affected my wallpaper and has totally disabled all the Firewall and Antivirus programs already on my computer. I am more than willing to wipe my harddrive, just not sure how to do that either.

Regarding your instructions to rid “AntiVirus2009″ by deleting its files… I found 46 wininet.dll files and about 20 shlwapi.dll files in my Windows folder, but am afraid to delete them. Are you saying that ALL these wininet.dll and shlwapi.dll files belong solely to AntiVirus2009 and are not legitimate Windows files?? How can I be sure? I’m afraid to delete anything important bc I am unable to get Microsoft updates – this bug disables both manual and automatic updates, and whenever I try to enable them they are immediately disabled; and it blocks downloading from microsoft.com, and has disabled my accessing Task Manager.
Computer search found no files called av2009.exe,Antivirus2009.exe, Antivirus 2009.lnk,or Uninstall Antivirus 2009.lnk; it only found the wininet.dll and shlwapi.dll.
Any advice would greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I agree with Cristopher, set the PC in safe mode
and then delete or rename the file/s.
Use Totalcomander to see were the files are.
safe mode= press F8 during boot, chose from command, safe mode.

I am in the midst of deleting anything I can find from AV360 from my hd in safe mode. I don’t know if it’s going to work or not, but I’m at wit’s end. McAfee said my install of their sw was too late, the damage is done. I’m sure the creator of this stuff is real proud of him/herself, but there’s a place for him/her where it’s REALLY hot…

By Tyler on Feb 18, 2009 | Reply
Hi, another really fast and easy way to get rid of this is to go into your start menu, click on all programs, accessories, system tools, and then go to system restart. After the window opens up just pick a date that is before the date that Av360 started to mess with the cpu. This should only take about 5mins deppending on the comp. =)
By Tyler on Feb 18, 2009 | Reply
sorry =P it’s **system restore** not restart
By Roni on Feb 18, 2009 | Reply
I tried every method mentioned here and nothing worked. The 360 was disguised in my C drive under programs as Movie maker. Each time I tried to copy the files, rename them, or simply delete them, they multiplied themselves. This is a horrible worm that you can’t get rid of. They have made it stronger and stronger in the past weeks. I’m so upset right now!!
By Tyler on Feb 19, 2009 | Reply
Hmm weird I just did it today and it worked fine for me. Well guess it doesnt work for everyone, are you sure u restored to a date that didnt have it??
By Roni on Feb 19, 2009 | Reply
It will not even let me restore at all. It tells me that it was unable to restore my system. When you deleted the files, did you find that they reappeared a few seconds later? Even when I renamed them, they reappeared under the original file name a few seconds later. It’s weird!

Well, no one here gave me anything that could help. I ended up having to back up my files….most of which I ended up losing anyway. I called Dell customer service and they were able to reinstall my OS from there. The process took about 30 minutes and $50 bucks, but at least the virus is gone and I feel better. The one good thing is that the original security system I had when I bought the system 3 years ago was also reinstalled (somehow it got deleted awhile back). Good luck to everyone else. If you have the original installation disks that come with the PC you might want to try that. (I didn’t have mine).

malware “system security” was downloaded by my wife thinking it was an update. It has control of all windows commands. It also would not permit me to get to the DOS command (system tools); nor to system restore (system tools). Hence I can’t get to anything that will permit turning its effect off. I am intrigued by the comment that someone renamed the .dll file to a .doc file. However, I don’t find this thing’s file listed anywhere. Anyone have any success with how to remove “system security version 4.51″?? My last ditch effort will be to take it to computer geeks who say they have dozens of computers affected with the same program.

I woke up to my wife telling me the computer was being invaded since 8/2008. I didn’t believe her because we have had this running for two months. I saw the download window and tried to x-out, it kept coming back. I thought this was from my systems tool program so I just loaded it. I could shoot myself. After looking online and noticing it was fake I went to my cache-cleaner (CCleaner)-(I believe windows defender can do this too) under tools then startup and found the pav.exe file and I deleted that. then restarted my computer. Now its all good but when I tried to look for the rest of program I find nothing-but at least its not running!! The next thing I will do is set my system tools to let me know of any program that hasn’t run in 30 days. Hopefully this will bring it out. Hope I may have helped someone because this bug is very irritating.

Hey, I was wondering if somebody can help me, I’ve followed these instructions but I couldn’t delete the system security files under safe mode, it gives me a blue screen saying “a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down…” So I’ve deleted everything that day from .exe and .dll in regular mode. redigit won’t work task manager won’t work, nothing. Tried doing a system clear and it says I have to contact the domain administrator?? I rebooted my pc like 3 times. Don’t have a clue how to download a virus scanner from one computer and put it on another? Very frustrated. Any advice?

Guys go to My Computer, then your hard drive (C:\) then to the file WINDOWS then system32 then delete the dddesot.dll. You probably can’t delete it at this point so go to safe mode and then do it. You can go to safe mode by repeatedly pressing F8 until you see a change.(Slowdown when you hear the PC beeping.)

It wasn’t there to delete in system32 the file dddesot.dll

Why does it tell me that its looking in system folders, but not in hidden files and folders?
By Allie on Aug 29, 2009 | Reply
crap I’m so confused. I did the thing where I stopped the running program. Then I downloaded the AntiMalware software successfully (or so i thought). The AntiMalware program disappeared mid-scan. Poof. Gone. I tried the Search files and folders thing. The searching window just disappeared as well. I don’t know how to solve this.

For system security, try going into safe mode and deleting the eight-digit files off of C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data. Also go to run->msconfig ->startup and delete the same numbered files. Delete the files from control panel and regedit and recycle bin and task manager also.
