How to edit registry key (regkey) in Windows XP or Vista?
February 28th, 2007 | by Brian |————————————————————————-
Basic Registry Editing in Windows XP/Vista
Editing registry key can be very complicated and highly risky. Please do NOT try this unless you are absolutely positive that you might mess up the system, and as always, it’s highly recommended that you do a backup of the registry (or whole system) before making any modifications.
Since it would take hours to talk about the registry, I am just going through the very basic steps. You can always refer to the Microsoft website or books for full details. Here’s the most common steps you might ever need to know for basic troubleshooting:
For Windows XP:
- In Windows XP, from Start, and then click on Run.
- Type “regedit“, then click on OK.
- Now it opens the Registry Editor.
- You can easily navigate through the subkey if you know what you are looking for. Or, you can press “Ctrl + F” to locate the subkey that contains the value you want to edit. (F3 to Find Next)
For Windows Vista:
- From Start, then type “regedit“.
- Click on “regedit” on the search result to open the registry editor in Windows Vista.
- Step 3 & 4 are the same as Windows XP (see above).
That’s all you need to know for basic editing such as removing spyware or troubleshooting a basic Windows problem. Please digg it if you find this helpful. Good luck!

to get rid of the system alert problem??? pls help.
By Brian on Apr 16, 2007 | Reply
Suzuna,
Removing those regkeys alone would not get rid of the system alert popups. You need to stop the appropriate processes, unregister and delete the infected dll’s then delete the corresponding regkeys in order to completely get rid of the annoying system alert problems. You can also check the SpyLocked removal instructions which contain the latest infected files at this point in time.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

if you are using an account w admin access already, then most likely a mal software has disabled your regedit.
you’ll first have to be sure that the software is not active on the memory.
then copy and paste below code to a textfile named whatever.inf and left click install on the file
hope this help

i used SpyHunter in order to find all the files, cookies, and registry keys that i needed to delete or unregister, etc. i figured out how to delete the files and such, but in the registry, there are still a few keys that i cannot find at all. why is this? the only part of the keys i can see in SpyHunter are Object name:System location: HKey_Current_User\SOF… and another file is Object name: Microsoft\Windows\… with the location in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOF.. now i’m assuming that HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOF .. ends with SOFTWARE. i went in there millions of times and i still cannot find these files. are they hiding somewhere?

I too got this XP Antivirus 2008, I removed all the files stated above, but now it is still eating away at my system files, I can not download anything from any update page. The page is either missing or it will not allow me to download. I too get the admin message sometimes. My restore window is blank. The more I work on it the worse it seems to get. I have taken it completely offline b/c I’m redirected anyway. I did find one .dll file that seems to be part of the issue that I can not remove b/c it’s always in use (even in safe mode)and I can not find the process it is linked to… any ideas?

I followed the directions for removal of this virus, but noticed that the virus put some slightly different named files onto my harddrive than those mentioned in the removal instructions. I deleted according to the directions and what I felt were files close in name to what was printed. I am now free of all the maliciousness of this virus, but in so doing I have lost my desktop modification tab in display edit leaving me with no way to customize my background or activate the screen saver. If I found the person that did this, I would use him for target practice

I can’t get Symantec’s vptray icon to show.
Symantec sent me the registry to check this key;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
then;
# Click Edit> New> String Value.
# Name the value “Vptray” and press Enter.
# Double-click Vptray.
# Type the path to Vptray.exe, enclosing it in quotation marks, and press Enter.
Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP:
“C:\Program Files\Symantec_Client_Security\Symantec AntiVirus\Vptray.exe”
The value shown on my computer is;
C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANT~1\SYMANT~1\vptray.exe
The path to the program on my machine is;
C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus
My question is;
What is the reason for the tilde characters and the underscores in the different versions. and
should I merely type the path to the actual file on my computer as is.
The underscores and tildes worry me.

Okay, did the deleting process, however, I am afraid of the Basic Registry Editing in Windows XP/Vista, what does it mean when it says Please do NOT try this unless you are absolutely positive that you might mess up the system, and as always, it’s highly recommended that you do a backup of the registry (or whole system) before making any modifications.
should I do this or not, I don’t seem to be having anymore pop ups? I am afraid of the messing up my computer things Please HELP!!!

However, I am still getting blocked almost every website I try to go to, even ones I used all the time. A screen comes up and says “blocked” and wants me to activate antivirus 360. What should I do next? It did get rid of the icons on my taskbar finally, but can’t log into some of the sites I use because of blocks. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

I need to edit the registry to remove the key that remembers the Outlook password. (Outlook keeps prompting for the pop3 password although remember password was chosen during the mail account setup. )I can see the registry key, but cannot delete it.
Logging in as an administrator doesn’t seem to help. The SYSTEM setting doesn’t have Full control and I can’t seem to find what I need to do in order to get it.
Anyone know how I can get control of the registry in Vista? Seems a little unkind of the powers that be to decide who should or should not be able to fool around in the registry.
Thanks in advance for your help

I have a windows vista and I was recently infected with System Security 4.52.
It’s amazingly persistent and it’s taken over the only admin account.
Now I am stuck using an account that is not an admin but the problem is non-admins cannot install software; including software that could remove system security. I’ve tried a lot of things nothing is working.
Help?

This probably will not get a response, but when I tried to open regedit to remove Windows Antivirus Pro, I was asked what program I would like to use to open it with, just like when I trie to open something on my desktop, or certain programs (like McAfee). This is the main problem stopping me from getting rid of this program, as I have done everything else.

Ok Krystle if youre still looking at this site press F8 repeatedly during the boot up process when u start your computer. Then you can easily figure it yourself from that point. My problem is though that i can’t download things on to my comp. probably due to this shit and it says that my current security settings won’t allow it. Any type of help would be nice.
