The Big Boss by Nicole Hayley

Daily Routine.

His day started out like every other day-- he woke up hating his life, hating his very existence, and cursing his job. A little alarm on his cell phone would wake him every day at 6:30, dragging him out of bed. A groan would escape his lips as he shuts off the alarm and force himself into the shower, the steamy fumes waking him up. He would soon step out of the shower, shave, and brush his teeth. After doing so, he would look in the mirror for a good five minutes-- sometimes he would tell himself he's gorgeous, sometimes he would be disgusted at what he saw.

His next step was getting dressed. Usually he wore black slacks and a button down; he had to look semi-formal for his job, you never know when someone important came in to talk to you. This process took about 30 minutes; he'd usually be out of the door by 7:00 sharp and on his way to work, getting there at about 7:30. He'd clock in and walk groggily to his little cubicle, putting on a fake smile for anyone who came his way.

Opposite from Chester sat his co-worker Brad Delson, a rather unkempt looking man whose eyes were always glued to the computer screen. Every morning, Brad would drag his eyes away from the screen to look at Chester, say good morning, and ask how his weekend was. They didn't talk much, but they occasionally took lunch breaks together.

"Good morning, Brad." said Chester on this cold February morning.

Brad turned around and smiled, "Good morning. How's everything?"

"Shitty, as usual."

"Haha. Any plans for tonight?"

"Probably go home and watch some 'Deal or No Deal' or 'Dancing with the Stars,' it's a very unfortunate thing, really, both of them are on at the same time."

"You mean to tell me you watch stupid shows like that?" said Brad with a chuckle.

"Brad, look who you're talking to, I don't have a life. I'm lucky these fuckers are still keeping me here."

Brad chuckled once more, "Well, it's pretty easy for me. I think I'm getting a promotion."

"Bastard," Chester mumbled. "What's your secret?"

"Um, I sit here and do my work." Brad said rather blankly.

"Duh." said Chester. He spun around in his chair to face his computer and checked his email. Ah, of course, an email from his boss.

Bennington, you have a couple of things to do today;

Warner Bros has currently had their eyes on a local band in LA that needs to be signed. It's your job to write an email for us to send to them telling them that we're interested in the demo they sent us.

We also need to schedule an interview with a couple of singers for next week's newsletter. Your job is to contact their agents. A list of them can be found at the bottom.

Last but not least, you have a meeting today in my office after your lunch break.

Chester groaned and dropped his head. To some, his job might seem very easy, to him, it's a living hell. He hated sending emails to agents; they were always rude and unhelpful. He hated writing emails to send to bands that need to be signed. He hated everything about his job.

Lunch time came very quickly for Chester today. He and Brad sat at their favorite spot in the food court and munched on their lunches.

"Know what the meeting's about today?" asked Chester with his mouth full.

Brad shrugged, "I heard a few things here and there, but I don't know for sure."

Chester nodded, "You're going in too, right?"

"Mhmm..." said Brad, taking a bite out of his sandwich.

"Oh good. I was scared that they were going to call me in to tell me that I'm fired or something."

Brad rolled his eyes, "One of these days, they will. You need to start working on a strategy to get the bosses to like you."

"Bosses?" asked Chester.

"Well yeah, Hahn isn't our only boss, ya know."

Ah, Joe Hahn; Brad and Chester's boss. The master behind all the "do this, do that" emails. Joe wasn't the friendliest person alive. He gave too many orders and insults escaped from his mouth more than belches did.

The two co-workers sat in silence for a few more minutes, eating their lunches. Brad was right, one of these days, the boss will fire him. That day might as well be today. Granted, Chester hated his job, but it paid very well. There were also a couple of advantages here and there, meeting famous people was always fun.

"Ready to go?" asked Brad.

Chester nodded, cleaning up the remains of his lunch and throwing it away. He and Brad made their way to Hahn's office in silence and all that could go through Chester's mind was "I hope I don't get fired, I hope I don't get fired." They made their way inside, seeing many other employees inside. Hahn stood by the window, watching everyone like a hawk. They all sat around the long table, waiting for Hahn to speak. Finally, he did.

"Well thanks for being on time for once." he said quickly. "Anyway, I'm here to tell you all that we have a major event coming up. Tomorrow, our big big BIG boss is going to be visiting for a week."

"Why?" asked one of the employees.

Hahn's lips twitched for a moment, "Do not interrupt me." The employee flushed a shade of red, and then Hahn continued. "As I was saying-- My boss will be visiting us for the week to patrol and see how everyone's doing. We all know that he will be disgusted with what he'll see, seeing as you are all losers. Hah. That is why I am choosing two of you to entertain him all day tomorrow."

Entertain? Chester thought. I'm pretty good with that.

"So, are you all eager to find out who the two lucky victims are?" asked Hahn. All the employees stared back at Hahn with blank expressions-- honestly, no one really cared.

"Delson and Bennington." said Hahn.

Chester blinked a couple of times, Really?

"You two should spend the rest of the day thinking of ways to entertain the big boss, got it?"

Chester shrugged, "Define 'entertain'."

"Show him the city, take him out for lunch, show him that you guys aren't dumb asses. Crack jokes, he likes jokes. Dress to impress. Get creative!"

"And what, pray tell, is this big boss's name?" asked Chester.

"Shinoda. Mike Shinoda."

Brad's eyes widened at once-- "Shinoda?"

"What's wrong, Brad?" whispered Chester.

"We REALLY need to think about how to entertain him."

"Why?"

"He has one of the hugest names in Warner Bros. This might just be your chance at a promotion."

Chester smiled to himself-- score.
