Whaling Ship Sent Packing

Sydney Morning Herald

A JAPANESE whaling ship has left an Indonesian port after being refused permission to undertake urgent mechanical repairs there.

Indonesian officials rejected a request to dry dock the harpoon-equipped Yushin Maru No. 2 in Surabaya. They dismissed a Japanese guarantee that it was a research ship engaged in legal activities, instead accepting evidence gathered from Australia by an animal welfare group.

"The difference was really those letters from Australian authorities," Femke den Haas, a spokeswoman for the Jakarta Animal Aid Network, said yesterday.
