「重ね着」 literally means “Dress heavily”. It is a fashion trend in Japan, which men and women(Yes, not limited to female) wear layers of clothes.A friend told me that it started about 2-3 years ago.
In winter, instead of wearing one thick sweater, young people normally wear up to 4- 5 layers of thin clothes with different size and color. However, the style is not limited to winter. For spring, it is normally 3 layers and in summer, maybe 2 layers?? I found a quite interesting website introducing how to do 重ね着 properly.
Actually, this fashion trend is not limited to Japan. I do it in Singapore too (only up to 2 layers though). However, I am still amazed by the Japanese 重ね着 style. I like the way how they match the colors. For instance, previously, I would not wear a light color layer above a dark layer. Now, I found it actually not quite a bad idea! Also, some clothes are made for 重ね着 style only.
Nowadays, even the dogs are in 重ね着 style. ==>
