Highland Park Boro administrator Karen Waldron gets help from SGI members Barbara Petkov and Danny Nagashima as they placed shovels of soil around one of three young cherry trees planted on the grounds of Highland Park High School. The Buddhist organization, Soka Gakkai International (SGI), donated the trees to the boro for the creation of a peace and friendship garden in commemoration of the establishment of the first SGI group in New Jersey 49 years ago. The inscription by the garden celebrates youth and the vital role they will play in the creation of a “century of peace and humanity.” “We have a multi cultural community and the school grounds is a perfect spot for the planting of trees symbolizing peace and friendship.”
