Boris - Buzz In

I was excited when I found one of the remixes from Scion A/V Remix project: Boris. Boris is a japanese metal group that has been around for 17 years and has 17 albums (the japanese are release whores). I was going to make a full post about this but I just found it on welikeit.indie at this link. They are so slick over at welikeit.indie. So I'm not completely cheating, I'm going to post my favorite remix from the Buzz In project, which is by Todd Edward.

Boris - Buzz In (Todd Edward Remix)

THE LOWBROWS - Dream In The Desert (2009)

The Lowbrows are a Japanese electro/nu disco duo that is often compared to the sounds of Justice without the redundancy (or farty basslines). The most similar artist you can find is perhaps 80kidz. A description I found of this EP is as follows. Dream in the Desert is an epic and dramatic, sci-fi-esque mover with strings, karate movie vocal chops, slap-happy bassline and dreamtime synths. Underwater lullaby electro to watch manga and eat shabu-shabu to.

Tracklisting:
01 Dream in the Desert
02 Dream in the Desert [Hystereo Revision]
03 Melody & Shudder
04 Melody & Shudder [Daniel Haaksman Remix]
05 Dream in the Desert [Hystereo Rebrand]
06 Dream in the Desert [Flight Facilities Remix]

Cornelius - Cm3: Interpretation Remixed by Cornelius (2009)

Cornelius is known as one of the founding fathers of experimental music from japan, embracing genres that entwine shibuya-kei, pop, ambient, and electronic music. This is his third remix compilation.

As one of Japan's better-known ambassadors of idiosyncratic, experimental pop, Naka-Meguro's Keigo Oyamada, aka Cornelius, has enjoyed a varied, internationally acclaimed 15-year career. As well as releasing his own records, he has reworked others', produced music for video games, and even appeared on American kids' TV teaching little nippers across the Atlantic how to count to eight (presumably leaving nine and 10 for another day, when Ryuichi Sakamoto becomes available).

With "CM3," the chronologically titled followup to previous volumes of his remix-album series "CM" and "CM2," Oyamada continues his global gathering, cueing up unlikely musical bedfellows from different geographical and temporal spheres. Britain's Bloc Party and Norway's Kings Of Convenience nestle alongside Japan's Sketch Show and Denki Groove; when old guards James Brown and Sting show up, things start to look a lot like a "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory"-style family sleepover.

But for all its worldliness, remix albums are a slippery business and have to work extra hard to stand out. "CM3" follows a similar path across its 12 tracks: Most of them are rerendered in simple lo-fi, with fragmented acoustic fretwork scattered liberally in place of the original melodies. It's an understated affair offering few surprises. Although by no means an unpleasant listening experience, with so many great names appearing on the record, a disappointing feeling of missed opportunity lingers.

Tracklisting:
01. Sketch Show - Chronograph (Cornelius Remix)
02. Kings Of Convenience - I'd Rather Dance With You (Cornelius Remix)
03. Bloc Party - Banquet (Cornelius Remix)
04. If By Yes - You Feel Right (Cornelius Remix)

I'm still on holiday from blogging. I may post a few things over the weekend, because there's some good stuff out right now. I start a new job next week so it's downhill from there, but I would like to still maintain this blog.

In the meantime, check out my good friend Jarri's new sexy blog called disco naïveté. Be sure to add him to your RSS.

Séverin - Cheesecake (2009)

Séverin is something that may sound familiar for the Breakbot remix of The Edge Of A Sunday. They can be described as French electro pop or indie pop. The man behind Severin seems profoundly talented and uses more synthesized sounds accompanied by female vocals.

Severin: One of the One-Two has unless it is the Two. Still, it is Lafayette with his lifelong friend as they formed the electro-pop combo in 2006, significant achievements materialize their pop opera The Story of Bob Star released early 2009. Aujour of this hui is solo that occurs Severin, this solo is that it consists more precisely. For in effect notwithstanding that the album is attributed to him, he does not act by him but fourteen young ladies who make their voices on the compositions of the prodigy. Some rumors say that this is a result of a heartbreak that he decided to call in his corner for girls only, of what others will say that man is a woman simply. In any case, it is clear that he knows how to surround the man with the red suit has to believe the plastic of his muses contained on the cover of the album. Pretty sure, but still little known and this opus could deliver a good advertising has provided the interpreter as worthwhile. Indeed the image given by some that is not up to elicit envy and curiosity of the great public. In the image the expression of this effort seems, therefore, was half full or half empty depending on the point of view of each. We prefer then say objectively that it is half full of good songs that are not name them, Leftovers , Primeira Cancao amor means rhetoric of Johnny, the humorous Farewell to God, the first single The edge of a Sunday , You can blame me more and finally You run again respectively interpretated by Liza Manila, Marina Constance Verluca, Elvire Bonduelle, Nadege Winter, Gesa and May This UNDENIABLY which means that next to the rest of it seems thin, as highlighted by the very bland Big Mouth by opening that does not want to listen the rest of the compositions and could unfortunately get the listener ratings of good things that make up this album.

A first experience for Severin in half shade, therefore, a part of the positive including Johnny and The Edge of the Sunday may be the best tracks on the album, and secondly at least as good as the shows Ti Adin that despite the originality of its American cuisine in France.

Plastic Little - La La Land (2009)

Plastic Little is an underground rap/hip-hop group straight out of Philly. Their earlier works are often compared to Spank Rock. This was released May 29,2009.

There aren't a lot of funny guys in rap. Funny things are often said and done, but few rappers are the sort you want telling a story when everyone at a party shuts up and listens to just one person. It wasn't always this way (see: Redman, Biz Markie, N.O.R.E., and De La Soul). But Plastic Little are the asshole wiseguys you want telling those stories. Simultaneously too full of themselves and astoundingly self-aware, all Plastic Little do is piss on rap's conventions, sniping at tropes (Black Power rap, crowded-club "bangers," Wu-Tang wannabes, gangsta muzik) on their debut full-length. They want to amuse each other while infuriating everyone else, something they do over impressive approximations of all the sounds they're mocking.

She's Mature is sonically similar to Spank Rock's debut full-length, YoYoYoYoYo, another accomplished musical work bogged down by is-it-or-isn't-it-coy MCing. PL feature no such ambiguity. Both groups practice a style Pitchfork contributor Zach Baron has dubbed Gallery Rap, and are part of a Philly-BMore-NYC collective I once too-snarkily called the Hollertronix Quadrant. That was probably too small a geometric shape to contain the varying levels of talent that dribble out of this vortex. Plastic Little are, at their best, the cleverest kids in the sandbox. But when they're bad, they're self-satisfied and puerile.

Wet Hair - Dream (2009)

Wet Hair is formerly Raccoo-oo-oon out of Iowa City. They are considered psychedelic, experimental, and drone.

When Iowa City freak-out free-rockers Raccoo-oo-oon called it quits last year it left a bummer scar in the Midwest underground scene. But time is a great healer, and so are new bands. So out of the ashes of the RAC pack comes Wet Hair, a synth-punk-trance duo composed of keyboardist/vocalizer Shawn Reed and keyboardist/drummer Ryan Garbes, and Dream is the band’s debut vinyl full-length after a series of increasingly shredding limited-edition cassettes on their own Night People label. Piling together an unlikely trash heap of Suicide-style drum machine beat-bops, zone-droned krautrock keys, and fucked up outsider crooning, the LP’s four tracks careen across a spectrum of moods and mangled melodies. Recorded at Flat Black Studios by Luke Tweedy and mastered by Pete Swanson, Wet Hair’s cult electric annihilation has never gleamed with such razor-edged weirdness; this is their dream made real.

Tracklisting:
1. Cult Electric Annihilation (8:26)
2. Black Sand (8:14)
3. Ordinary Lives (6:33)
4. Radio Machines/Gold Chains (8:46)

The Golden Filter - Thunderbird (2009)

The Golden Filter is a nu disco outfit that premiered on discodust early 2008. They toured with the Presets and performed at SXSW. They have since become a highly desirable international sensation. Their sound is very distinct as with most analog synth based groups. Popular remixes include that of Polly Scattergood and Peter Bjorn And John. They are an electronic duo based in New York. Lead singer Penelope grew up in Lismore, near Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia, while disco and analogue synth programmer Stephen is from Ohio, USA. Lisa, their drummer, appears with them in their live shows.

1. Thunderbird (Radio Edit)
2. Thunderbird (Original Mix)
3. Thunderbird (Dub Version)

Baxter - Proof Remixes EP (2009)

Baxter does it again. The Finnish pop disco artist released a remix EP on beatport. If you recall, the original single for Proof was my first item on this site. Multiple people have told me that the other EP was my best post, so do yourself a favor and grab this.

The first release by this talented Finnish artist, Aiming High is a downbeat synthpop track with a lazy disco drumbeat that almost trips over itself. Soft chiming rhythms accompany a warm bassline and smooth synths that repeat over themselves in a gently out-of kilter melody, providing a loose summery feel to the track. The Asciinoid remix is a more dancefloor-orientated house number, with vocal stabs echoing the bouncing bassline throughout yet retaining the feel of the original. Nice laidback romantic electro track. The Asciinoid mix is a great remix... great for breakdancing - very good Mark O'Sullivan (DK7) The Willy Baxter EP is excellent. Both mixes are awesome. Darran Nugent (Aruba Productions) Like the Willy Baxter original and his remix of H3lx too, hes a find! Damien Hughes (Queep Organic House) Nice start for the new label, really like the Aiming High (Original mix), nice stuff, and will be playing for sure. Leigh Morgan (Urbantorque) Some great sounds in this. He uses the space in the track so well. Crisp and clear production. Lovely tune, Franseco Farfa would love this. The Asciinoid mix has great play on the original samples here. Like the simple drum line, clipped vocals and the reverbed snare. Again, the break is great. I'd definitely play this. Paul Prior (Collective Music) Thanks for sending this through... Its the Willy Baxter (Original Mix) for us.. quality electronic business for a variety of floors. Alan O'Hare (Mode Music) The original version of Aiming High opens the EP in style. It's followed by an excellent remix from Liam himself, under his Asciinoid moniker. He up's the pace, making the track a little heavier whilst retaining the lovely melodies from the original. Gavin (Twentyfourhours)

3 Slope (Spirit Catcher Remix) (7:03)

Al Usher - Lullaby For Robert 12"x2(2009)

Al Usher is an artist that produces lush italo beats alongside prodigies such as Ewan Pearson. I know him best for his remix of Sam Sparro's Black & Gold. This download is for two 12" that both have very desirable versions of the song. The review below is derived from a review of the EP Gnanfou.

Al Usher's name usually appears alongside Ewan Pearson's (with whom he collaborates as Partial Arts, the duo behind the infectious 'Trauermusik') or encased in parentheses as a remixer for Zero 7, Camille and Amy Winehouse among others. So when Mr. Usher steps out on his own, as he has on the Gnanfou EP, it's usually an event worth the cost of admission. This debut release on Misericord—a joint venture between Pearson, Sasse and unnamed others—is indeed a momentous occasion, containing two groove-heavy originals and a remix by seasoned veterans Swag.

The title cut moves at an unhurried, near-Balearic pace with instrumentation to match—drowsy cowbells, a reverberating synth line, effortless guitar leads and distorted bass thwacks. Usher keeps the formula interesting with ethereal melodies that drift in and out of the mix, evoking a hazy disco with ghosts on the guestlist. Swag’s dub hollows out the track and focuses on the synth line, which plays anchor to similarly-styled guitar and bass licks. It's a bit friendlier for mixing, but lacks the narcotic charm of the original.

Slyly tucked away in B2 is 'Here Today', a secret weapon track if I've ever heard one. Two layers of pulsating string arrangements and spastic woodblock pocks form a dizzying rhythmic assault that boils over at the arrival of a fat bottomed bassline. Usher's blend of high-minded, ornate construction and ass-centered riffs is certain to put a euphoric sway in dancers' step, and has been road-tested by Lindstrom and Prins Thomas on their Radio 1 Essential Mix.

Tracklisting:
01 Lullaby For Robert (Original Mix)
02 Lullaby For Robert (Bogdan Irkük Remix)

01 Lullaby For Robert (Gatto Fritto Remix)
02 Lullaby For Robert (Mark Seven Island Dub)

Mika - Rain EP (2009)

BONUS: Mika - We Are Golden (Calvis Harris Radio Edit)♥♥♥

Mika is an electronic britpop artist who is well known for his effeminate vocals and happy go lucky sound. I could not find the cover art to this remix EP nor could I locate any information.

MIKA (born Michael Holbrook Penniman in 1983) is a Beirut-born, Paris and London-raised, London-based singer who has a contract with Island Records and used to attend Westminster School. He first appeared on BBC Radio 1 in September 2006. He has a background in classical songwriting.

His long awaited first album Life In Cartoon Motion was commercially released on 5th February 2007. It has a coming of age theme, and deals with the transition from childhood to his current position in life. His debut single was PlayRelax, Take It Easy (2006) though the second single PlayGrace Kelly seemed to garner more media attention. In January 2007 he took the UK charts by storm; his second single PlayGrace Kelly charted at Nº3 with downloads alone, and climbed to Nº1 on January 21, 2007.

In December 2006, more than 130 UK-based music critics and broadcasters took part in the BBC’s prestigious Sound of 2007 music poll and MIKA was named the best new talent for 2007.

Ascii.Disko - Black Summer EP (2009)

link fixed
Ascii.Disko is back with a new EP featuring some hot remixes. He gets labelled techno, electroclash, and other things like that which are equally as demeaning. Some excellent dark electro that is highly instrumental.

Ascii.Disko is formerly of Slown and also a member of Venus Vegas. He is an electronic music project by Daniel Holc from Hamburg, Germany. Currently he lives in Madrid, Spain. He released his music on the German indie label L’Age d’Or (Lado).

Before DJing and producing music he was guitar player in the band Slown. After a while he got bored of making rock music and started to be more into electronic music. He also was producer for the band Tigerbeat from Hamburg. His debut album Ascii.Disko was released in 2003. Performances all over Europe followed. Later he was co-host at John Peels show on BBC Radio 1.

Oneohtrix Point Never - Zones Without People (2009)

Oneohtrix Point Never is the solo project of Brooklyn-based electronic musician Daniel Lopatin. Genre description includes electronic, experimental, psychedelic, and drone. He attended Hampshire College where he received a degree in cultural studies and electronic music, later releasing his senior thesis recording on Naivsuper under the name Dania Shapes. Utilizing budget polysynths and freeware, Dania Shapes embraced a computer music aesthetic divorced from system-based, indeterminate musical practices. Further refining his neo-romantic estedtix and now fully guided by a desire to make R.A.W./OPEN ACCESS SYNTH JAMS, Lopatin began recording as Oneohtrix Point Never (short for MAGIC 106.7). Using a variety of synthesizers, sequencers and loopers, Lopatin employs a technique he refers to as grid tears which abstracts the organizing elements of automated synthesizer arpeggiation via blurring and decay. As part of a holistic vision for OPN, grid tears find their way into his sample-based echo jams, video collage and web-based art work. Lopatin’s longstanding interest with the old masters of the synthesizer and their ensuing diaspora is met equally by his fascination with the amateurism and ubiquity of stock synthesizer music, and often works with motifs commonly associated with minimalism, contemporary noise, Berlin School, 80s new age, b-films, darkwave, ambient, fusion, and techno. Rather than focusing purely on sentiment or style alone, the promise of OPN is found in its ability to generate a music in which these disparate worlds sympathetically resonate towards the ineffable, the gestural and the innate.

Lopatin also runs the Upstairs CDR label, and is a member of Infinity Window with Taylor Richardson of Prehistoric Blackout and Purple Haze. He is currently living in Brooklyn, New York.
