ok.. so here is my 2 cents plus a dollar (it's kinda long).. first of all... i am Korean and while reading this forum, acknowledge that most of you are pretty intelligent people. but as an American born-and-raised person who is now currently living in Korea, I must defend Korea as much as I can.
First off, YES this was a mistake. I mean, you guys are already having negative thoughts and attitudes towards Korea so yeah it was not a good public relation move by SOME PEOPLE of korea... BUT dude.. people make mistakes all the time. First of all, God bless the Katrina victims and families, but I mean... the American government FUCKED UP... someone had a post saying 'can't believe that a non-3rd world country would do such a thing' well first of all... this was not a government sponsored event... it's a teacher teaching a mistake and a venue's for allowing it.. and look at New Orleans.. I can't believe that the GREATEST POWER IN THE WORLD can't even send water for a couple of days to its own people. thats like 5th world shit.. look, i understand the magnitude of the hurricane and don't want to use it as an example.. but man i guarantee Korea can send each other water.. NEXT.. you must understand the magnitude and history of Korea-Japan relations. we are all taught not to forget history -- and while it is true that we should forgive past tragedies.. we must also understand that this happened a mere 50 some years ago... you cannot expect people to just simply forget what happened and be so nice about it... imma parallel this to America again. do you see the majority of Americans saying that they love Middle Eastern people? im also guessing that SOME of the victims' families will pass on feelings of hate to their children... its not easy to just forget a tragedy... and 9-11 , although a great tragedy, was nothing compared to a forced occupation and disintegration of culture like the Japanese occupation was. I will cut this argument here. Next up is the fact that while most of you are trying your best to be fair and not ignorant, it just isn't possible when you have not fully experienced the culture. You cannot say that Korea is 3rd world, when Korea is the Internet capital of the world.. it is ranked #1 as being involved somehow with the Internet (I don't know the exact wording) but anyways.. also, Korea placed 4th in 2002's World Cup and tied 8th in the world in the 96 or 00 Olympics.. (forgot).. Korea tied with the UK... (sports doesn't really define industrialization and stuff but I kinda wanted to brag about that one) Anyways, alongside all that, Korea has and is doing many things that defines it as one of the highest industrialized nations... OK back to the main topic... I am by no means saying what the children were taught to do is in any way a good thing.. but you cannot blame the government for it... im sure some children's father in New York taught their child to hate Middle Easterners... and he in turn maybe drew a bad picture... i totally agree that the teacher made a mistake by encouraging and showing something like that to the public... (not to be defensive of that one but some people might argue that it is showing freedom of press and shit... no censorship... and some artists might say that people should show their emotions without blocking anything... american government, as well as korean, does a lot of underground shit to censor shit out.. so maybe this could be a refreshing showing of true feelings) anyways, i don't really agree with my own argument right there... i think that we should try to patch relations with Japan and stuff... as far as the historical arguments/theories.. there are a lot but i am not well enough informed on it to give any historical data regarding Korea's ownership of Dokdo.. i'm sure Japan has its own theories as well... so I'll leave that to someone who is more informed... Anyways, lastly, I just ask that people don't start setting up an image of Korea and Koreans based on one thing like this or even a couple of things. That creates ignorance. Ignorance creates hate. And then you become just like the exhibition. America in the 21st century still has its KKK... Korea still has its haters... thats life.. let's all work to love a little more and hate a little less through dialogue like this one. i hope that i further helped this discussion rather than to divide it. i am not perfect and i encourage people to reply to this post.. well essay i guess... sorry so long btw... and also acknowledge my own bias and opinions that are undoubtedly embedded throughout this essay... lets all try to be less ignorant and more open about things... but DokDo belongs to Korea. I read the whole thing and I'm still not entirely sure what the hell he's talking about...
Dude, Korea is like 1/50th the size of the US (rough estimations are fun!) so I would certainly hope they could. -------------------- "I guess we thought we had to be crazier then everybody else 'cause we were the Irish guys..."

Just adding some of my thoughts upon this topic even though it is old...
I am biased toward korea since i am korean. the main reason is because of my grandmother. during world war 2 she had lost her mother and father because of the japanese invasion. She and her brothers and sister had fled to a friend's house and because she was the oldest took care of them. Now with a history like that how could you not hate someone who murdered your parents? just because you live in a small country doesn't mean its up for sale! im just sad that there were hundreds of others like that! SORRY IF THIS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS TOPIC! but some comments offended me so much that i just had to say this. |

Well, I would think that "the main reason" you're Korean is because both your grandmothers (and both your grandfathers, for that matter) were Korean, but I'm an odd mix of Irish, Welsh, French, and German, so what would I know? Hope this helps. Toodles! -------------------- Judge not lest ye be judged, dumbass.

Maybe it's like being Jewish. I seem to recall that only the mother side mattered in determining your Jewish-ness.

We don't care. And by the way, Let this be the end of it. -------------------- "I guess we thought we had to be crazier then everybody else 'cause we were the Irish guys..."

These pictures drew by elementry school students. I know that they are too young to think carefully. However, these are kids' drawing; therefore, we don't need to think that all Koreans think like that. Some other countries (Taiwan or etc.) think that we (U.S.) all have guns, and sometimes kill people.. It's not true. Not all Americans! So, we should, other countries include Korea, think like adult. |
