Welcome to the Kindergarten/Junior School (K/JS)

Our theme for the 2008-2009 school year will focus on our school's rich history and our 1st school goal, a personal and active faith in God amongst each member of our community as we "Live Believing".

On January 1, 1908, four religious of the Society of the Sacred Heart arrived in Yokohama, Japan, with the mission of starting a school for children that embraced the spirit, beliefs and goals of the Sacred Heart Order as deemed by the foundress, Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat. The primary goal of the Society of the Sacred Heart was to provide an education for women that would prepare them for success in an ever-changing world. 100 years and a very rich history later, the same vision holds true.

We are a Catholic school in the heart of one of the world's largest cities, but more than that, we are an International school and community, that for a century, has embraced diversity and provided an education that prepares young women from many countries and religions for global citizenship. The goals that have driven the society for over 200 years have been at the heart and helm of ISSH for a century.

What makes ISSH different from other International Schools?

We are a faith based learning community. We nurture the spiritual development of our students through their mind, body and spirit. We guide our students to engage in thoughtful and meaningful community service by actively participating in programs that build a social awareness that is relevant to today's world.

Our school provides a quality academic program that incorporates research based instructional strategies. These methodologies allow for differentiation and foster a love of learning while maximizing individual potential. We research and select the best materials from Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America to enable us to implement our high curriculum standards in all areas. Besides the core curriculum areas of language arts, math, social studies and science, we have excellent specialist classes in library, art, music, technology, P.E., Japanese Culture, Japanese, and French Languages.

We are a dynamic, progressive learning community that provides a coeducational Kindergarten for children ages 3-5, and a single-gender learning environment for girls in grades 1-12. I invite you to visit our beautiful park-like campus in the heart of Tokyo and experience our unique educational milieu for yourself.
