Birds on the Wire

Feel Free to Chirp Along

Brazilian musician Jarbas Agnelli saw a newspaper photo of a flock of black birds perched on the wires strung from utility poles and recognized that their configuration looked very much like a musical score. Using the image as a template, he arranged and recorded a composition, using xylophone, bassoon, oboe and clarinet, The notes themselves were the bird’s idea.

Agnelli told the Daily Mail, ”The pleasing melody is not my invention. It was the birds’ idea”. “The notes are the exact position of the birds (in between the lines). The rhythm is a interpretation of their position, since there are no bar lines.”

JUST ANNOUNCED!

An Exhibition Opportunity in the Arts Exchange Gallery.
ArtsWestchester Announces “Fumetto” Competition
DEADLINE: September 17th

Westchester-based artists are invited to submit their work on climate change as part of our “Fumetto” Competition.

“Fumetto”, ArtsWestchester’s fall exhibition, will be the third in a series of exhibitions concerning environmental sustainability sponsored by Swiss Re. This show consists of comic drawings and storyboards created by winners of an international competition that were displayed at the 2008 Fumetto International Comix-Festival in Lucerne. The theme of the festival was climate change; all of the storyboards in the show comment on this theme.

Artists may submit comic drawings, paintings, sculpture, electronic media, etc. on the theme of climate change and global warming. All artwork will be judged and the top ten entries will be selected to exhibit alongside the European Fumetto Competition winners.

Please send an artist statement along with at least 3 images of artwork no later than Thursday, September 17th:
