On Sunday, authorities have identified the body discovered at Arafune mountain as that of missing Crayon Shin-chan manga creator Yojiveo Usui through dental records and other means.

The body was discovered 120 meters below the mountain's Tomoiwa cliff and reported at about 10:25 a.m. on Saturday by a male climber. Usui's backpack, camera, and other items had fallen about 50 meters away. Inside Usui's backpack was his mobile phone, wallet, and clothes. A police helicopter from Gunma Prefecture airlifted the body on Sunday afternoon. Police from the nearby town of Shimonita concluded that the 51-year-old creator died from collapsed lungs and other injuries sustained across his entire body sometime in the afternoon of September 11.

According to Usui's family, Usui had said that he was "going hiking for a day in Gunma Prefecture," as he often did, on the morning of September 11. His mobile phone was last detected in the vicinity of Karuizawa, a town about 100 kilometers (about 60 miles) northwest of his Kasukabe home, on Monday. Karuizawa is located in the mountainous eastern part of Nagano Prefecture, near the border of the equally mountainous Gunma Prefecture.

In particular, Usui was said to have expressed his intent to climb the Arafune mountain, which towers 1,422 meters (4,665 feet) high at the border between Nagano and Gunma Prefectures. According to Gunma Prefecture's police, there are no guardrails near the top of Tomoiwa cliff, but the established climber's trail is too far from the cliffside for someone to fall. Authorities had been searching this area since his wife reported his disappearance on September 12, after he did not return the night before.

The editorial staff at Futabasha's Manga Town magazine has stated on Sunday night that the "future publication [of Crayon Shin-chan] is to be determined." Futabasha said it was "going through great shock, now that the worst outcome has come to past. There are no words to express the anguish of the surviving family, but we just pray for his happiness in the next world."

Wow...that's a weird way to go. I mean, not "found dead while strangling himself in the closet and masturbating" kind of weird, but I wouldn't have expected a comic book artist to fall off a cliff and die.

A sad story, though, and a real shame. I love hiking and climbing and do it as often as I can in my free time. I consider myself pretty sure-footed and safe, but it can happen to anyone, I suppose.

Personally, I only really like Shin-chan via Funimation's localization and rewrites, but that doesn't really matter.

Yea, reminds me of a story, this guy who was a master free climber, saw a vid where he climbed a small mountain in 4 minutes with no safety equipment.

How did he die? Safety equipment failure during a perfectly safe demonstration.

And this is pretty sad icon-screamer.gif

Much like the case of Seth Fisher you can't choose your sad accidental death.

Very, very sad to hear this.
Spin-Out!
I never got in to Shin-Chan, but I don't really watch Adult Swim anyway. Sad to hear he's dead, though.

I know that he had family and I feel sorry for them. They lost a love one.

.......

But no more Shin-Chan. This is a blessing.

Shin-chan's english dub is wonderful, and though I've never watched the original, he still is the reason it exists at all. RIP man, you brought enjoyment to a ton of people.

RavageX-9
why was my first thought that a manga creator was found dead that it had to be some crazed fan?

Well there goes another name added to the list of people Death is goin postal about. I really enjoyed the series, (most likely would have liked the Japanese version if I could understand the language icon-wildride.gif) so I'm sorry to hear of the creators passing. Have to remember to pickup S2 (P1&2) when I get the chance in memory.

Are you referring to Dan Osman?

If you are then you got a few points wrong. For starters, it's not called free climbing. Free climbing is what you do, outside or on an artificial climbing wall, when you get form the bottom to the top without weighting the rope. You use nothing but your own body to ascend. It's contrasted with aid climbing, in which you use aid such as hooks, nylon step ladders (called aiders) and many other techniques to ascend.

Climbing to somewhere high up without being roped up is called free soloing. Climbing without being roped up, but staying relatively low to the ground is called bouldering.

It is speculated he fell while taking a picture.
