"Crayon Shin-chan" creator vanishes while hiking

Japanese cartoonist Yoshi-to Usui, the creator of the popular anime and manga series Crayon Shin-chan, has disappeared while on a hiking trip, police said Wednesday. Usui, 51, debuted as a manga author in 1987. His Crayon Shin-chan, featuring the daily life of mischievous five-year-old boy Shinnosuke, became a popular anime series in 1992, running for at least 391 episodes on TV Asahi. A series of seven 90-minute movies based on the TV show was aimed at a young audience. Last Friday, he left his home in a suburban city north of Tokyo for a day outing to mountains in nearby Gunma, a regional police official said. However, the official said, there has been no trace of him, and calls to his mobile phone have gone unanswered: "We are searching for him in the mountains." "We are surprised and seriously worried because this kind of thing has never happened before," said a spokesman for Futabasha Publishers Ltd., which has been running a Crayon Shin-chan series in its monthly comic book. "We have his manuscripts in stock, and we don't have to stop the series immediately."
