A LARGE WHITE-GLAZED PEAR-SHAPED EWER
TANG DYNASTY (618-907)
The body set with a short tapered spout and applied with a curved bifurcated handle set with studs at each end, covered in a clear finely crackled glaze stopping at the slightly spreading flat base
12 3/8 in. (32 cm.) high, Japanese wood box
Acquired in Osaka, Japan in the 1930s.
A very similar, though much smaller (16.2 cm.) Tang white-glazed ewer is illustrated in Mayuyama Seventy Years, vol. I, Tokyo, 1976, p. 81, no. 211.
