I've decided to cosplay as Abarai Renji (Bleach) for both days in May. Instead of investing in a wig I've decided to dye my hair :D
Bleached it for the first time today (shall be bleaching it again before dying it bright red ^__^) and uhh, here are the results :P

I have done the template for the blades (roughly at least).
Balsa and cardboard
Template (mechanism and handle outline)
Template (full-length)

I'm hoping you guys will like how the template looks, because when my dad cuts the shape out
what's done is done. Obviously this is only a rough template and the actual shape will have to be
drawn out on the wood.

So, let me know what you think.

I have some sanding sealer that was recommended to me, but do you think that's enough? I'm not convinced that it'll do the trick 100%. If not, what would you suggest me getting a hold of in order to really strengthen it enough so that it wouldn't break (at least not easily anyway).

I was told by one of the moderators (Granny Gertrude in-fact) that if I planned on being able to wave them around and do poses etc, then it couldn't be made out of anything harder than balsa. My dad is going to be making the mechanism for them as well so they can pivot. I really don't want to get down there, have someone knock into me and they snap.

Thanks for the compliment too.

I sudjest SlimDefinition making it from balso wood and then mabye paper macheing it, cos i just think that if you were to hit it against anything even by accident it will dent the wood is so soft. If you were to paper mache it, it would give it a exteria sort of shell that would'nt dent as easily.
BUT word of warning, i just made my cloud shoulder armour out of paper mache and sometimes it can create wrinkles in when it drys. So what im planning to do is sand it down then paint it. This method may not work on balsa wood tho so i sudjest befor you try anything you test it first, cos the last thing you want to do is make something your happy with and then ruin it.

A extream option may be fiberglass im not so sure on that tho, as i dont know
A,how to use it
B,how expensive it is
All i do know is that it is light

I cant think of anything else tho some other people might have things tho. Also im not saying these'll defiantly work there just the options i can think of ATM.

Ok, thanks for the info.

The problem with paper mache really is that it'll a.) cover the wood so it probably wouldn't look right, b.) what you said about it crinkling, and c.) a ridiculous amount spent on glue etc (I'm currently unemployed so I need to watch when and where I spend my money - doing paper mache with two long swords like that will cost me more in glue).

I looked up wood hardener and lacquer as well. Apparently either will work and add some weight to the wood. Someone said it on Yahoo! Answers who's worked with balsa quite a bit (also a modeller as well). They said it can be painted with a hardening serum or lacquer (either does the same job apparently), and can be given as many coats as it will take before it won't absorb any more. That should decrease denting at least. I wouldn't wear them on the tube anyway, what with all the knocking about we get on those damn things as people seem to think "sardines in a tin can" feels really good.

No worries, I'm thankful for anyone's advice really. It's my first cosplay (and may be my only costume for a while so you might see me as Rayne quite a bit if it works out well enough). I hate wigs and prefer to keep my hair red so my options are limited, heh.

I've been told about something called Hammerite paint as well. A friend (who will be attending as Laguna perhaps) said that he puts it on his bike's frames. He said three coats of it makes it nigh on unscratchable. Apparently there's a type for wood as well. I'll definitely be looking into it, and need to find something that will get the nice shiny steel/silver look as well.

not heard of hammerite paint im afraid. But for shiny you might try spray paint but make sure you use masking tape to cover the bits you dont want silver i used that method for this...

thats me on the right as Vincent. I used spray paint for the boots and Claw. Then if you use PVA glue it drys clear so you can get a really nice shine on things.

fibreglass isn't a good idea... trust me. i'm an accomplished artist with a lot of training and experience behind me, and fibreglass resin is still a pain in the neck.

if i were personally making the swords, they'd be made from plastazote with a fibreglass rod core covered with coloured latex, painted then isoflexed.

recent example of my own making:

Re: COSPLAY PROGRESS PICTURES THREAD!

I think I might have seen you in October DarkNyte. Not sure. I saw a couple of Vincents I think.

I'm a half decent artist when it comes to drawing Xaerael, but when it comes to things like this I'm a novice really.
My dad used to be an engineer, and is fantastic at carpentry, so I'm hoping the wood will be ok. If/when I get a job
I may then do the blades again out of other material another time because as I said before, this will probably be my only
costume for a while, 1.) because of the unemployment situation, and 2.) there's nobody else I'd like to try and do at the moment except Shirley from The Legend of Dragoon. The problem with her is that she's in it for about 5 minutes. You see her briefly in a cutscene from 11,000 years ago and you fight her spirit. She's a red-head though, but not well-known.

I'll therefore probably be sticking with Rayne for a little while. I've spent quite a bit of cash on the costume already (too much in-fact), and I'm being funded for a tall ship sailing voyage in Menorca this April (if anyone's curious, visit http://www.tallships.org). So, I'll see how the balsa blades go first. If they flop, well I'll find another method.

Thanks for your help though guys!
