How to get Back to Your Natural Hair Color

A visitor to visual-makeover.com asks . . . “I colored my hair about 4 months ago and now I would like to go back to my natural color. Any advice?”

“Hair Color Correction”

First of all you need to let your hair get some roots, anywhere between and 1.5″ to 2″ would be good. The hair salon hair color uses numbers or levels of hair color. Most salon hair color brands go from 1-10 or 1-12. One being the darkest and ten being the lightest. If a customer wants her hair color correction lifted above a level 10 or 12 (depending on the brand), that has to be done with some type of a hair bleaching product.

This doesn’t concern you, since you want to go your natural hair color. The first thing that needs to be done is that your hair stylist needs to examine your roots to determine what your natural hair color level is. Then they need to determine what the level of the artificial hair color is. Now, here is the thing about hair color that the boxes don’t tell you. If you have color on your hair and you want to go to a lighter color, you can’t use hair color to lighten it because artificial hair color will not lift artificial hair color that is already on your hair.

Keep in mind that even if it has been four months since the last time you colored your hair, the chemical is still there. I hear this a lot from customers. “I haven’t done it for a while so there isn’t any in my hair.” This is false. hair color fades, just because the hair color fades does not mean the chemical washes out, it is still in the hair.

Even though you can’t go lighter, you can however, go darker. Let me give you an example. The hair color product you have been using on your hair matches up with a level 6 (remember 1 is darkest 10 is lightest) and your natural hair color level matches up to a level 4. Therefore, you are going darker and this can be accomplished. Now, you need to ask your hair stylist if they can use a semi or demi permanent hair color. This type of hair color correction is a deposit only hair color that has no ammonia, no lifting and is not damaging to the hair. The only problem is it usually fades faster (about 6-8 weeks), but it is worth it because it is so much better for your hair.

Now, if you go into the hair salon and your natural hair color level is a level 6 and the hair color you have been using is naturally a level 3 then you are going to run into some problems. This means that you are going to have to go through and strip the artificial hair color off your hair and then deposit a color to match your natural hair color level. I don’t like to have to strip hair color from clients’ hair because it is very damaging (most of the time) and I have seen it cause major breakage.

    1. I have a question, my natural hair color is bettween dishwater blonde and light brown. last year I dyed it ultra light ash blonde. My hair is frizzy and dry with one wave in the middle my hair is about shoulder length and my roots are about 1 1/2 inches long and I have tryed so many store bought products to try to fix it but none of them have worked. I can’t go to the salon because their to exspensive. What can I do?Help me, please!

    2. Jordan,
Your best bet is to find a beauty school near you and have them fix it. They can do that at a much cheaper price than a salon. Once they fix it, you may be able to keep it up, depending on what you are going for.
Stop trying to fix it yourself, it will need a double process to balance out the color. Your roots need to be dealt with differently than the rest of your hair. You will continue to damage your hair if you continue what you are doing.
But the good news is, it can most likely be fixed at this point.
      Good Luck!

    5. My natural hair colour is meduim brown, i have been putting blonde highlights in for about 3 years now & would like to go back to a colour similiar to my natural colour. Maybe a bit darker, the reason why i dont want to go back to exactly my natural colour is because its a boring brown. from reading you website i’d say i have a cool skin tone. i am going to to to a hairsalon for this. can they colour my hair with a semi permant colour because i dont want to damage my hair too much? As is i have curly hair so it often frizzes. do you think i should rather just get it back to my natural colour & then try darker later on, or should i just go for a slightly darked tone first time?
      Thanks!

      Comment by Kate — November 22, 2005 @ 7:15 am

    6. Kate,
Most importantly, is that you have a reputable colorist…someone you can trust. They really will have the best answer for you, because your hair is right there in their hands. They can asses the condition and porosity of your hair.
After saying that, if your hair is considerably lightened, you will need a permanent color to hold the color on your hair. The colorist also will be able to suggest a color with a bit more pizazz for you.
      Good Luck!

    7. Hi, my natural color is Sandy brown. No matter what I do it will still lighten up to a dark blonde. My problem…..No matter what color blonde (dark blonde to very light ash blonde) it always brings out redish-orange tones. If I go to light brown, its so dark looking me that I hate it. I really want to stay way from highlights because I want to let my hair grow longer to have a body wave like actress Debra Messing style. Any advice on what I can do??
      Thanks

      Comment by Michelle — November 25, 2005 @ 12:24 pm

    8. Hi Michelle,
I’m unsure as to what you want to accomplish with color…covering gray, lighter or darker or the same sandy brown. But to get rid of the redish-orange your formula will need to include more ash tone, maybe a dark ash or medium ash blonde.
I imagine you are doing this at home. I suggest you call the 800 number on the box and they can suggest what color to use in their product line.
Also, make sure your hair is in it’s best condition before perming…makes a ton of difference in the end results you will get.

    9. I have naturally dark brown hair and my hair stylist used a rinse to lighten it to a medium brown shade. I also have blondish highlights on top of that, but now the roots have grown out and I would like to return to my natural hair color. I was under the impression that a rinse washes out, but my color is pretty much the same as it was when it was first done minus the roots. Is it the highlights that is causing it to look that way, and what will be the least damaging thing I can do to return to my natural hair color?

      Comment by Dav — November 28, 2005 @ 11:51 pm

    10. Hi Dav,
Your stylist misinformed you or it was just a misunderstanding. A rinse, can never lighten a haircolor because it has no peroxide to do so. It was a permanent color that was applied.
A rinse now, over your color would be the least damaging, but it will lighten up to your highlighted hair eventually. If your roots are noticabley different, you could use a semi permanent or permanent color to even it out to your original color. I’ld suggest asking a colorists opinion, who can see exactly what is happening.

    11. My natural hair color is dark brown. I recently had messed on a dye job and had to redye it again. My roots are now growing out and my hair is strawberry blonde and dark brown. Is there anyway I can dye it dark again, myself, without damaging it too much??

    12. hi! my natural haircolor is dark blonde and i dyed it lighter blonde about 3 months ago. by now its very faded and orangish. i unfortunately made the mistake of using a hair color in the states that is not sold in europe, where i am for the year, so i cannot use the same product again to freshen it or anything so i want to recolor it to light brown/dirty blonde like it was before, but i am not sure how a new hairdye i get will end up looking over already dyed hair. also im worried about it fading again and looking even more orange. what is the best thing to do to return to my normal haircolor easiest and with the least amount of maintainance later and of course the least amount of damage?

    13. I have a hair color crisis….A couple of months ago I had my hair colored at a salon (I only color once a year or so just for a change) and she was supposed to use a semi-perm caramel color on my medium brown hair. It turned out quite a bit redder than we had expected but I was ok with it since it wasn’t permanent. The color has not faded and my roots are growing out (looks like permanent color was used). So I tried to go back to my normal color using my old at-home semi-perm kit, and the results are lots of red! Whatcan I do to fix this or at least tone down the red without damaging my hair more?

      Comment by Libby — December 11, 2005 @ 1:16 pm

    14. Hi, my natural hair color is dirty blonde. 3 weeks ago I used a Loreal nonpermanent dye that is supposed to wash out in 28 days. I dyed it a reddish brown color and after 2 weeks I really wanted my dirty blonde color back. I tried washing my hair with dawn dish soap because I heard that works. Now, a week later, my hair is just a plain light/medium brown color. I really want my natural color back, I used to have a lot of natural blonde highlights. Will it ever go back to its natural color? and is there a way I can get it back now? I would really appreciate any help you can give me with this.

    16. Hi there, I need some advice. I’m of mixed race with hair to the middle of my back. My hair is relaxed and I try to keep it free of harsh chemicals after some bad experiences 5-6 years ago. I’ve always had long hair & I try to treat it as gently as possible. My hair is naturally dark brown and I don’t color, perm, blow-dry, flat iron, or do anything overly “bad” to it except relaxers. Would it be harmful to put a temporary rinse on my hair, or maybe some highlights? I would love to have pretty blonde or light-brown highlights without having to use harmful bleach & toxic chemicals. I try to take care of my hair and I want blonde or light-brown highlights, but I need to know if I can get them safely?

I bought a do-it-yourself kit that matches my roots. Do I start the color at the very top or where my roots end and the blonde begins?? Thanks!

Most girls would give their right arm for her naturally white hair. How can she get it back to her beautiful hair? I am not sure what type of color has been put on her hair.

    23. My mom thought my hair was boring and decided to try the at home dyes you buy at wal-mart. It looked a little better, but then my roots started to show so we dyed it again with the same stuff. It came out way to light. So we let my roots grow and then went to the salon to get my hair dyed back to its normal color and it still came out to light. I haven’t dyed it since and my roots are atleast 3 inches long and my hair is always in a ponytail. I want my natural color back, but I am scared what will happen. Can you please help me, Chelsea.

    24. I have a quick question. I just recently (about 3 weeks ago) dyed my hair a light copper brown and got some blonde highlights. I highly dislike the haircolor choice because i wanted a darker brown rather than what I actually had done. I was wondering if there is any possible way I can get my natural color back which is a medium brown, and how long should I wait to get it dyed to my natural color? Can you please help me, thank you!

      Comment by michelle — January 3, 2006 @ 11:59 pm

    25. I’m not sure what to do with my hair- it is medium length, just past my shoulders, and naturally curly, although I had it relaxed about 6 months ago and now it is more wavy. My natural color is a golden brown, but about 9 months ago I had it dyed very dark brown, almost black, with a semi-permanent dye. Unfortunately, that never fully washed out, so I do have slight roots I would like to get rid of. (You can only see it in certain lights, and when I wear my hair straight.) What I would love to do is go to basically back to my natural brown, and add hightlights, but I am not sure if my hair can handle more processing. It is quite dry (being naturally curly, and due to what I have already done) so I don’t want to ruin it, but I hate where I am at right now. Can I get highlights? If not, how long would I have to wait?

      Thanks!

    26. HELP!

I bought a colouring and highlighting kit and coloured my hair last night. The colour came out ok, but the highlights turned out horrible. My original hair is dark brown. The new colour is sort of reddish brown, and the highlights are a horrible orangey brownish golden. It’s more visible on top and front of my head than the rest of the hair. I’d like to go to a darker shade that’s even all over, what should I do?

      Comment by Talia — January 5, 2006 @ 3:42 pm

    27. My natural color is dark ash blonde hair with about 20 percent gray. I tried to cover the gray with a semi-permanant color in medium ashe blonde and realize now that it only tones the gray down. I wish I had stopped there. I decided to try a permanant color only a day after the semi-color and now my hair has alot of red tones. I have decided to stop using the permanant color and go back to the semi-permanant color until it grows off. I considered having the color stripped but my hair is already very dry feeling. How often can I use the semi-permanat color since it fades faster without hurting my hair. I would use it twice a month if that was o.k. I always loved my natural ashe colored hair color minus the gray. Now I am a reddish haired girl. Any advice to tone down the red other than semi-permanant color?

      Comment by MIchelle Greene — January 9, 2006 @ 3:22 pm

    28. To Talia with the orangey, golden highlights;
I would call the 800 # of the product you used. They will need to know if you had any color in your hair previous to using the current one. They can tell you the possibilities of what you could use from their product line.
If you, or the help line, are unsure of what your final results will be with what they say you can use….stop and have a professional fix it!

      Comment by Barb — January 13, 2006 @ 5:20 pm

    29. To Michelle on toning down the red;
I think you have it right, to use a semi- permanent light or medium ashe blonde to tone down the red. You can wash your hair with dawn liquid dish soap a few times to try to strip out the red. Then be sure to condition/deep condition the hair as needed.
If your hair is long, coloring those long ends twice a month, even with a semi-permanent will be hard on that hair. Try staying with once a month, the ends should fade a bit anyway.
      Good luck!

    30. Hi, I have a question, I recently bleached my hair, so it’s kind of blond now. My natural hair color is auburn (many, MANY people tell me it’s rare…?). Anyway, if I want to switch back to my natural hair color, do I have to shave off everything, or can I do other things to get it back without having to shave it all off? I don’t wish to purchase hair color products that match my hair, I just wonder what steps I could take to get it back in a natural way.

My hair was a medium auburn with color (natural mostly gray now) My roots grow out so quickly I decided to go to a lighter brown, because I am always mixing a neutral with my red to prevent HOT ROOTS and tired I doing this. I used Clariol 84N but it is a bit darker than I wanted my hair — it is pourous. I know about stripping artificial color I have done it in the past successfully but it is a pain and can damage so here is my question.

    50. Good afternoon. I have been having my hair dyed light red professionally for the past 15 years at least. I now find that it is too expensive for me to continue getting this done by my hairdresser every 3 weeks. My hair, although thin, grows quickly and my white roots show too quickly if I try to extend the in between time. Is there any way I can change from a professional hair dyeing to doing it myself with a store-bought product without messing it up? Thank you!

    51. Hey there, well about 3 months ago i died my hair using the Redken Shades EQ product, my hair dresser did it professionally. Well it was an auburn color, so of course it has red in it. Well i dont know if you are familar with this product but it is semi permanent. And it used to be incredibly dark but now it is almost back to my natural shade but it still has the red tint to it. And i really can not stand not haveing my natural dirty blonde color and more. Is there anything i can do to get rid of this horrible red color? Thanks!

    53. Hi,
I lightened my hair to a level 8, my natural color is a 6. I have an inch of regrowth showing (light ash brown). The lightened hair is not in good condition. I am trying to find a good semi permanent color with no peroxide or ammonia, in a light brown/dark blonde shade to get me through until my natural color grows in fully. Any recommendations? Everything I see is usually in vibrant colors like purplish reds or red/brown red/blond shades (like color pulse).

    57. I’ve been dying my hair for two years now, using a permanent dye every time. My natural color is somewhere between a light to medium brown. I’ve been dying it a darker brown, and every time it fades, it leaves my hair a reddish-orange color. I’ve stopped dying my hair for a little over a half a year, and now my roots are about an inch and a half. I really want to have my natural color again, but I do not want to rely on redying it over and over by a professional, because it always ends up fading away within a few days, or worse, it turns into a brassy red/orange shade. Please help!

    58. My hair is naturally a golden medium brown and I bought a feria that was just a little darker than my hair color. My hair turned out almost black with a lot of red in it, actually in the sun, its completely red. It was permanent. I dont mind it being dark, I would just rather it be a esspresso golden dark than a red one. Someone told me I should put an ash brown in my hair to neutralize it. What should I do?

    59. I have been coloring my hair med. auburn for 5 years, I also have some gray. I would like to just go natural, which is light ash brown, I tried to fix it myself and ended up in a salon. They were unable to fix it and I ended up with strawberry blonde hair for a while. I just ended up going back to med. auburn. What should I do to get this red out of my hair?

    62. hi, the last time i dyed my hair was back in january. i think i dyed it chestnut. a little while before that in aug i dyed my hair a hidious colour, started off as a dark dark purplish black and in the sun it was a deep cherry red =S. my natural colour is between dark blonde and light brown, not really sure because i have been colouring my hair in many different ways for the past 4 years (including peroxide, lemon juice, and mostly boxes). i was just wondering if stripping off the artificial colour would work in my case, or would the easiest way out be just growing out my hair?

    64. Cathy,
STOP…mortgage the car, or get a part time job, just pay for a professional now ( go to a beauty school for cheaper price)
At the least - go to a school and have them look at it, get an estimate of what they would charge…if you can’t afford it, ask them if there is something you can use at home. Just be sure the instructor gets in on the assesment!

    78. I have dyed my hair for five years now, but stopped in March 2006. My hair has grown about 2 or 3 inches out and it looks horrible. My natural hair color is very dark brown. I tried to dye it back to my natural hair color using store bought products, but within 2 or 3 months it faded to this light blonde with some red (the dye was originally darkish brown). Now with dark brown overgrowth and the blonde like other hair, the contrast is horrible. Is there anyway that I can permanently get my hair color back with just once dying or would I have to continue dying my hair again and again (I will not start dying my hair again if this happens). I am so frustrated! Please help me! Thanks.

    80. My natural color is dark brown. For 20 yrs I was blonde, about a yr and a half ago I had lowlights put in. It got very expensive and time consuming. After about 8 months I went out and got a box of nice and easy , natural light golden brown and did my whole head. I have been doing it since. The only thing that bothers me is I have a lot of red highlights. Someone told me to change to a ash or cool brown to reduce the red. Then someone else told me because of the previus highlights it could turn green…any suggestions.? My hair is very long and the ends wash out quite fast. I only leave the dye on the ends for 10 minutes. should I leave it on longer? When it was blonde I used unred with my dye to get the red out..Help..

    81. I’m trying to resolve a major hair dilemma at the moment. My natural hair colour is dark blonde, i’ve been getting highlights done professionally for a long time but allowed a friend to convince me to touch up my roots with a store bought product a few months ago. Unfortunately the result was not the fresh sunny blonde look I was going for, rather a bright orange/ blonde. I immediately went to the hairdressers in the hope that they could strip the orange colour and make it blonde again. Unfortunately they said it would damage my hair too much and instead they dyed my hair a dark brown (which still has a reddish tone to it). I’m tierd of my brown hair colour and longing to be a blonde again. is there anything a hair dresser can do to transform brown hair (with red tones) into blonde?

      Comment by Julia — February 20, 2007 @ 7:09 pm

    82. Julia,
I feel for you. The stylist who took you to dark brown felt he/she could not lift out the other color without damaging your hair too much, and that is what they know.
It may be possible that a colorist with more experience would select to bring you to a blonde color, if they think the condition of your hair can withstand it.
I would seek out the best in your area, you will need to pay, but if you want it bad enough . . . maybe its worth it.

    83. Debbie,
Because your hair is so long, and all the different processes you’ve been through, let a professional get it right . . . at least to begin with. Then you can keep it up after that by doing just your roots.

      That’s my best advice,

I’m only 14 so my mom thinks i’m too young to get it done in a salon, so i was wondering what healthy ways i can lighten it at home. I have heard lemon juice, vinegar, and some other things can work, but then again, i also have heard that they can damage your skin, they can smell bad, and so on. So by any chance, do you know for sure what products i can put on my hair to lighten it in a healthy way? I hope to hear an answer soon, and thanks a lot! :)

    89. I have a dirty blonde natural hair colour but for about 5 years now I have been getting my hair dyed blonde….or getting platinum blonde streaks in it…..or sometimes getting a platinum blonde streak with a darker brown to compliment it….point being is that i have tried so many times telling the hair colourist “i want to go back to my natural roots” and they say okay….and then after my appointment when my hair is finished my hair is an orangy colour and i just detest it! so then that always happends, it’s happened about 3 times so then whenever that happends I just get my hair re-done with blonde and brown streaks because I guess I know that is my comfort zone of hair and I know it won’t look bad. I’ve wanted so bad to go back to my natural hair colour though because I’m pretty sure it’s not healthy for my hair to keep colouring it. But no hair stylist can get my ACTUAL natural hair colour right. I bring in pictures and show them and I know what my colour is. and when they look at my roots they always tell me the colour its going to be and it never works out that way

      Please help!! :-)

My question is, is it too early to dye it since i just got it bleached a week ago?
and if not, I know i will need to use a semi- perm. color, but if i use that will it help the ends of my hair. because now they are damaged and breaking off.

and also, what is this talk about green?

My natural hair color is a light ASHY brown. I have had bleach highlights and have tried on various occassions to get back to my natural color. The stylists will put a “ash” color on and it will take on my processed hair but will turn my natural ashy roots red! No one can seem to find a solution. 103. Ok, so about 3 months ago i permanently dyed by hair a light brown colour. My natural colour is mousey blonde/brown. The dye faded very quickly and my hair now has an orange tint, which is infact now lighter than my natural hair colour.

The problem is my roots are nearly 2 inches long now, and i dont know what to do about it.

Ive tried a semi permanent dye over the top, but that just changed the colour of the roots and the hair separately & didnt make it an even colour.

I cant leave my roots to grow out because it will look awful.

      What can I do?

      Comment by Amanda — October 24, 2008 @ 11:58 am

    104. Amanda,
Leave it to the professionals now. You will only do more harm by just throwing more color on.
A professional needs to assess what colors are needed on your roots and what to do with the rest of your hair.
Once it is fixed, you may be able to keep up the color, but at this point, you will only do more harm that will cost lots to fix or cost you the length of your hair!

      Good Luck!

      Comment by sierra — December 8, 2008 @ 11:53 am

    106. Sierra,
Rule #1 is don’t do anything too fast, when it comes to color correction. Your desire to quickly fix this type of problem is bound to cause you much more pain and misery! (Just read some of the comments above to see what can and does happen)
I know people hate to hear they should see a professional when correcting a color problem, but it’s the truth. That’s what you need to do at this point, and an experienced colorist can get your hair color back to a beautiful, even colored brown!

      Best to you!

Im getting sick of doing this and the colour is starting to come back even darker then before so i want to dye my hair a light brown caramel colour so i dont have to worry about it. is this a bad idea? Could the product that i want to use have some chemical reaction to the sun in because i think it is a metallic colourer or something?

    108. Paige,
You are right to have concern about changing your hair color after using a metallic dye like Sun-In.
My best suggestion for you is to see a professional for advice on what your next move should be.On your own you could end up with not only a color you didn’t intend, but also damaged hair!

    110. Olivia,
Your might try a brown wash out hair tint, two shades lighter than your natural brown. This will tint the ginger shade down temporarily and fade out. If you add your own shade of brown to your hair, it will darken it substantially!
If you question what shade of brown tint to use, ask your hairstylist.
      Good luck!

    112. Rina,
To get to where you want to go and to get it done right takes know-how. A professional should look at your hair and tell you what can be done.
It’s pretty much a sure thing that if you do this at home you will end up with a funky color you don’t want and have more problems to fix.
It might be that a colorist can lowlight and tone your hair to get to an acceptable color with less damage.
      Good luck!

    114. Caramel Color,
Read all articles here relating to “hair too dark” and read comments to see problems others have had when trying to fix by themselves. Then make your best decision whether you think you can handle this or if you should turn it over to a professional.
Your best bet with this color fix is to go with a professiona.

    115. Hi, i had my hair bleached and colored light blonde permanently (in foils, 2 colors close 2 eachother)

natural color is medium brown (some gold-ish tones)

ive been dyeing my hair with semipermanent for 2 months now (pretty much 2 weeks after getting it bleached.. school made me) i dye it a medium-dark brown and it looks natural

i want to go back to the blonde.. how long will it take 2 fade.. will it ever fade properly back 2 the blonde?

help asap please. thanks in advance.

      take care

    116. Nikki,
Your hair color won’t fade back to the exact blonde you had after highlighting, but it will keep fading if you stop putting in the brown color.
You may want to try using a clarifying shampoo a couple times a week to get more fade on the brown. Then be sure to condition well!
If it doesn’t become light enough, see your colorist to add more foils!
      Good luck!

    118. Jenna,
My advice? Don’t do it yourself . . . try finding a professional who will do it. Not sure why the salon refused to do it. They either thought it would damage your hair too much, or, they didn’t feel they had enough experience to get it right.
There are colorists out there who can help you, your job is to find one!
